British Medal Hopefuls?

I was just wondering if Britain are 'well in' for any medals? Do we still have any world beaters? Murray will be there for the tennis wont he? Does anyone have a list of who won medals for Britain in the last Olympics?

UK Sport expects British medallists in 17 different sports, cycling (target of six medals), athletics (five), sailing (four) and rowing (four) offering the brightest prospects.
im seeing odds about 1/2 for china to win the mnost gold jb. where you getting that price? Betfair?

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

5/6 at PP

Well I think our cyclists are amazing, if you get the chance try to youtube Victoria Pendleton and Chris Hoy. Amazing how they can do there sport. Rowing is a typically strong sport for us, they have a lot to live up to. Athletics is getting better, we have some good group for once, we normally have 1 or 2 stars but now we have a team of them.
I am looking forward to the boxing as we have some bright amateurs in there. Add the sailing to that and we should get a good haul of medals. I would say you need to look at the modern pentathalon too, there is one british athlete who is rather tasty. Look her up on the beeb website.

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

I see it now jb. that price is for 'most medals' as apposed to 'most gold medals' Still looks pretty good compared to Boylesports 8/11 for the same market. Will the chinese just have loads of people in every event? they could well do. Be interested in seeing what country has the most entrants. I suppose the chinese, the americans and the russians will be pretty much out in force and in everything.

that was quite exciting. Im looking forward to it all now jb. Well done 'that rider from great britain ' I used to hate racing people on bikes. I would push myself too hard and end up with the muscle in me calf moving up my leg and it would cause agony.

Here's a list of 'team GB' pentatheltes(??)
Official Team GB Website for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games > Team GB

Them 2 ladies listed there are 'alright' jb but nothing more surely?

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

You obviously have not seen Katy Livingstone in action, (athletic sense) I think you need a thread of who to watch, (with pictures, so we can schedule our viewing!!)

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

that Victoria Pendleton looks a stunner , she was naked on a bike on the cover of the observer sport monthly a few months ago.
bradley wiggins and geraint thomas have opted out of the tour de france to concentrate on the olympics so we could see a couple of medals there
the sailing could be a flop as the location of the course is reportedly poor for wind in august , the lack of wind makes the sailing more of a lottery

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

Today's Bettingzone Market News:

1330: Phillips Idowu is 4/1 with Ladbrokes to win Olympic gold in Beijing following his 17.58 metre leap at the Aviva National Championships and Olympic trials on Sunday.

The flamboyant 29-year-old is the world leader in the event this year and continued his fine form in Birmingham to easily take victory ahead of Larry Achike and Nathan Douglas.

Such is his former Ladbrokes price up the triple jumper at just 4/5 to claim a medal in Beijing and offer 100/1 that he sets a new world record at the games. Jonathan Edwards' current mark stands at 18.29m.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "Idowu is beginning to show why he has been spoken about in the same breathe as Edwards.

"He goes to Beijing as one of the country's leading gold medal hopefuls."

=============

I don't see anything on Ladbrokes' website in regards odds on the Olympics.

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

Aye we should do well in the cycling as we picked up a bagfull of golds in the recent world championships but liie anything else us Brits do i wouldent put my house on it.
No doubt we'll get a the usual couple in boating , yachting and canoeing. maybe one or two in Judo and the odd one in boxing.

was watching summat on tele the other night and noticed BMX is now in this Olympics, is that a demo sport or fully blown event as we have a young girl in that who has been world champ for the last few yrs and looks nailed on for a gold.

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

heres the girl ..Shanaze Reade she's like a young Fatima Whitbread on speed
Shanaze Reade Interview

If the BMX is anything like the winter x snowboarding then this will be one of the highlighs of the games as they knock each other out of the way with tumbles galore and plenty of thrills and spills.

Re: British Medal Hopefuls?

Yesterday's Bettingzone Market News:

1555: British cycling sensation Mark Cavendish is 5/6 to claim gold in the Madison at this summer's Olympics.

And Ladbrokes make the four-time Tour de France stage winner 1/6 to medal in the team event, alongside Bradley Wiggins.

The firm's spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "If Cavendish can transfer his Tour de France form to the track, the British team will be a force to be reckoned with."
