Coleraine's 3 olympic rowers go for medals

Richard Archibald will compete in the Beijing Olympics
Wednesday's BBC NI Season Ticket Special has a fly-on-the-wall look at the Olympic build-up of Alan Campbell, Richard Chambers and Richard Archibald.

With personal diary footage, Bann To Beijing looks at the Coleraine rowers' dedication and sacrifice required for their challenge in China.

The three hopefuls all went to Coleraine Inst school and BBC NI will chronicle their remarkable journeys.

The programme will be on BBC One Northern Ireland at 2240 BST.

It will be on BBC Two later in the evening at 0050.

Bann to Beijing will also be on the BBC iPlayer from Thursday morning for the following seven days streaming from 0410 to Thursday 14th August at 0409.

MAY 2008 Campbell claims gold at World Cup

Alan Campbell took the gold medal after winning in Germany
Alan Campbell powered to a gold medal as he won the single scull final at the World Cup in Munich on Sunday.

The Coleraine man, representing Great Britain, finished over a second ahead of the Czech Republic.

Richard Chambers and his Great Britain crew finished second to China in the lightweight fours final.

Richard Archibald failed to become the third Coleraine rower to secure a medal when his Irish crew came fifth in the same race.

Campbell dominated the race and led at the 500m, 100m and 1500m markers before winning in 7.26.28 seconds.

That was well over a second ahead of his Czech challenger while Norway completed the podium places.

China edged out the GB crew by just 0.59 seconds in the lightweight fours final.

Ireland stayed in fifth for most of the race and finished over six seconds behind the Chinese winners.

Who does he represent? GB or UK? Certainly not Eire!

U jerkoffs just piss me off, there is no "Nordern Irelund" there are "occupied zones".

Ireland is and always will be an one country, and no matter how many B-Specials you have you will never change that.

Dtiocfaidh ar la!

Finn Mc Cool, Shame on you

I n answer to your question Campbell and Chambers both represent GREAT BRITIAN , Archibald will represent Republic of Ireland all three are from Coleraine in Northern Ireland and we are not occupied by anyone.
After 30 years of troubles things are peaceful at last the murdering scum on both sides have decided war is a waste of time and democrotacy is the way forward.

Agree with your underlying sentiment & general attitude .

That said, I can't agree with everything.

Strange that seeing as how they are not part of that country.

Its not a question of attitude, question of fact. Not something you'll find at the bottom of your cooler.

Re: Coleraine's 3 olympic rowers go for medals

they can decide to row for britain or they can decide to row for a united irish team, which is what the olyampic team is, they opted for britain, hmm better training, better facilites, better money, what would u do, i think their decision was based on things like that, and not their loyalty to the crown and queen
and what about that dubliln 4 prick who played cricket for ireland, and now plays for britain, thers more ppl in dublin who want to be british, than there is in nordieland. to me they are the assholes

actually come to think of it what is the point of that game neways, is it like baseball or what..... go giants yeah

Re: Coleraine's 3 olympic rowers go for medals

Campbell ,Chambers and Archibald all still in with a shout of medals

Campbell produced a courageous burst in the closing stages to force his way into his final at Shunyi.
The Northern Irishman, who lost six weeks of pre-Olympic training time after a knee problem left him on crutches, made his usual quick start to lead through 500m.
Ondrej Syrek and Mahe Drysdale, the favourites to fight it out for the gold medal on Saturday, soon reeled him in to control the race.
Greece's Ioannis Christou caused panic amongst the leaders with a surge in the closing stages, but Campbell responded superbly to finish second.
"I am ecstatic," said Campbell.
"I have been stepping it up every time and it was the same again here. I had to do the sprint finish but it was brilliant.
"It was very close in the end. I am more than pleased with that. I would have taken any of the top three places. I am in the final and I don't care what lane I get. "Realistically, any one of us can win it. I have an outside chance, the underdogs chance. But it is always better to be the underdog."
