Gombak United will be eager to claim back their fourth spot on the table as they clash with Balestier Khalsa this Thursday evening at Jurong West Stadium.

Going a goal down to third-placed Tampines Rovers last Sunday, the Bulls were unable to stage a comeback, despite being awarded a penalty.

As it is, Woodlands Wellington sits above them with a point advantage, although Gombak have a game in hand.

Talking to sleague.com, team manager Jeffrey Lee was still rueful about his side's penalty shot saved at Tampines stadium.

"Before the game we actually asked Precious (Emuejeraye) to take it, but during the build-up to the penalty, he (Ruhaizad) told his teammates he was confident, so they let him take it.

"I also thought we could have at least secured a point at the way the players played.

"There's a slight regret with the misses but it's just one of those days and I don't blame Ruhaizad or anyone," said Lee.

Despite admitting that the defeat was a small setback to his team's otherwise vast improvement this season, Lee remained buoyant and confident with their performance so far.

"We're not expecting much. Our expectations are just at the middle of the table.

"Everyone wrote us off before the tournament, but now they're saying that we are a better team.

"Let's wait and see," explained Lee.

However, to claim all three points and surge ahead on the table, they will have to go through a stern test against the Balestier Tigers.

Lee knows that his opponents are capable of creating an upset.

"Balestier is a very physical side, and they have a good strike force upfront," explained Lee, who is cautious of forward Norikazu Murakami and Nigerian Mba Vitus Onyekachi.

"They played well against Home United and could have equalised, if not for the send off.

"I'm confident though it'll be a tough match, but we'll have the upper hand in it," said Lee.

Gombak will have to do without two of their cornerstone defenders - Faizal Senin is still nursing a knee injury while Nor Azli Yusoff is serving a one-match suspension.

Captain Sevki Sha'ban will return again to the starting line to fill in Faizal's position while Winston Yap will replace Nor Azli this Thursday.

The Tigers' coach, Abdul Karim, felt that Gombak would be a hard team to maul and concurred with Lee on the level of competition in the upcoming match.

"Gombak is currently peaking form and they have been having very good games.

"So far they're on a high so it's going to be difficult to beat them but we'll have to do better this time around to win.

"One thing's for sure, it'll be a big battle - the battle of Jurong West!" he mused.

Sengkang Punggol will have an uphill task ahead of them when they host high-flying Tampines Rovers this Thursday night.

The already tough match will be made that much harder with the suspensions to key personnel, Haris Sumri and Nabeel Yusoff and injuries to defenders Firdaus Salleh and Cole Tinkler.

Sengkang head coach, Trevor Morgan knows that the game could shape up to be a very tough encounter.

“Tampines are one of the top sides in the league, and it will be a very difficult game for us.”

“Haris Sumri, Nabeel Yusoff are suspended and Cole Tinkler and Firdaus Salleh are injured. We won’t be at full strength but we will give it a go and play to the best of our ability,” he added.

Morgan had set a seven point target from four games, starting from the Korean Super Reds game, 2 weeks ago.

Sengkang have managed to pick up four points from two games. They drew 1-1 with Super Reds and won 2-0 against Liaoning.

“At the moment, we are doing quite well and I know what we can and can’t do on the pitch,” said Morgan on his team’s current run.

It should also be noted that Sengkang have four more days of rest than Tampines.

“We may be fresher coming into this game but Tampines have a huge squad to choose from,” he said.

“They have a lot of quality and they even had the luxury of bringing Alam Shah on as a substitute in the previous game (against Gombak United).”

Meanwhile, Tampines will be more motivated in this game. The Stags almost slipped up against Gombak earlier this week, if not for a last minute penalty save by veteran goalkeeper, Rezal Hassan.

Also, a win this Thursday will put them on top of the standings.

Tampines have only one real problem for this match and it is the suspension to wing back, Santi Chaiyaphuak.
