If ever there is a time for the real men to stand up and be counted, there’s no other better time than this Friday when two of the biggest sides in S-League football face each other in the top-of the table clash at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
This mouthwatering fixture will pit fierce, perennial rivals SAFFC and Home United – both teams are tied for first place with 22 points from nine matches played.
Last season, the Warriors managed to collect seven points out of the three fixtures that involved the Protectors. Furthermore, their evergreen striker Aleksandar Duric found the net on two occasions – all the signs look promising for Richard Bok’s side.
However, Richard maintained that last season’s results are nothing more than old statistics and his players are fully aware that the Protectors will be a different proposition altogether this Friday.
The Warriors’ coach said, “I don’t think that there will be any complacency on my players’ part. We are level on (22) points with them (Home United) and it will be a very tough game.
“Firstly, we are playing at the Jalan Besar Stadium, not Choa Chu Kang Stadium. The first team who can adapt to the pitch will control the game.
“Secondly, they (Home) are a quality side full of dangerous forwards such as Qiu Li, Kengne (Ludovick) and Indra (Sahdan). Shi Jiayi also controls the midfield well so there’s no way my players are expecting an easy time,” he pointed out.
Both the Protectors and the Warriors came through with victories against Balestier Khalsa and the Young Lions respectively. Unfortunately for Vincent Subramaniam’s side though, defender Shahril Alias picked up his fifth yellow card of the season and he will be suspended for this game.
The good news is that defender Juma’at Jantan will be available for selection after serving his one-match suspension. Ditto for Ivorian defensive midfielder Diakite Fode Bangaly.
While Diakite is expected to return to central midfield duties, Juma’at may be deployed as a leftback should Vincent choose Rosman Sulaiman to partner S Subramani in the heart of the defence.
While the Warriors have no suspension worries, they do have an injury in the goalkeeping department. Shahril Jantan, who picked up a knee injury in the AFC Cup game against Mahindra United, is out for at least another week.
Reserve custodian Toh Guo’An is a competent replacement but ring-rustiness from the lack of competitive games may be a significant factor. The Protectors will definitely test Toh from the start.
It is in these kinds of matches where all players – whether first eleven material or the fringe types - will have to stand up and be counted.
One such player who could be a significant factor is striker Masrezwan Masturi. He may not be included in the starting lineup this Friday but he will pose a major threat coming off from the bench should Richard deploy him in such a way.
The Warriors’ coach commented, “He (Masrezwan) still needs build up his fitness as he has started only one game but it is a good thing that he broke his scoring duck in the game against the Young Lions. It has increased his confidence tremendously.”
