Apart from all the reasons cited so far,cigarette smoke contains nicotine,which is highly addictive.
Alcoholics don't get booze forced down their throats when they venture out of the house,and junkies don't get smack/crack/what have you,rammed into their bloodstream when out,but I get smoke into my lungs and nicotine into my bloodstream,just by being out in the street.
