Re: The Open - 19th July

Not gonna touch my outright positions until after the 2nd round as now the players have had a day get the feel for the course and atmosphere, I'm hopeful a few of them will get the finger out and play to their ability.

3balls:

Mickelson v Westwood/Taniguchi @ 1.98

One of Westwood's problems in the last few months has been shooting a decent 2nd round, again obvious at Loch Lomond where he shot a 74 on the back of an opening 65. He played ok today but still looked like the odd double bogey was waiting just around the corner. Mickelson was superb with his irons today, again a bit ropey with the driver, and took more putts than usual, but on the whole looked by far the steadiest in his 3 ball and with the earlyish start time tomorrow we should see him under par after tomorrows 18. Taniguchi had a nice start but was a bit wayward on the back 9 - doesn't look consistent enough to maintain a good score for the whole 18.

Howell v Choi/Sterne @ 4.1

Big price on Howell here. Not a favourite for this by any means as Choi whacked it round in -3 today, but given the way these three finished their rounds the value must be with Howell. He was +4 after 3 holes, then rattled round the next 15 in -3, while Choi made his move early on and then struggled to maintain that form. Sterne had a slow start, a slow finish, and was pretty pedestrian in the middle bit 'n all. I think if Howell can come out and even just par the first 3, he'll go into the rest in a strong frame of mind and could nick the honours in this 3 ball.

Maybe another couple in the morning.
