Cockburn City moved to outright second after edging past Wanneroo City 1-0 in a scrappy encounter at Kingsway Sporting Complex. Both teams had lengthy absentee lists with Cockburn missing Michael Mirco, Johnny Mirco, Jason Dos Santos, Dean Wallace, Anthony Pereira and Peter Kuzet......or their part Cockburn were limited to only scattered counterattacks, none of which really tested Mackie or his defence. The sound of the final whistle was a welcome relief for Cockburn on a day when Wanneroo deserved at least a share of the spoils

Floreat Athena came from behind to defeat hosts Fremantle Spirit 2-1, and in the process move four points clear at the top of the Premier League table. The speed of Callum Roberts provided significant threat to Floreat during the opening exchanges with only the experience of Ante Kovacevic and John Migas keeping the youngster in check.....Fremantle worked tirelessly to conjure up a late equaliser but it wasn't to be as Floreat effectively locked the game down in their defensive third.

Cockburn City remains amongst the leading pack following their 2-1 defeat of a gallant Armadale at Dalmatinac Park. A couple of early strike secured the home side the points despite a second half rally from the visitors produced a deserved goal through Jason Goodwin.....Cockburn on the other hand were clinical in their finishing.......

A goal late in each half earned Inglewood United victory by 2-0 over a luckless Fremantle Spirit at Clipsal Stadium. The two-goal margin flattered the home team on an afternoon when Fremantle did everything but put the ball in the back of the net.........

A late penalty converted by captain Kevin Henderson was enough to secure Stirling Lions maximum points against a brave and tenacious Fremantle Spirit line-up at the WA Spanish Club.

Josh Kamasz is a worry for Cockburn still though. I need to find out more about Cockburn's injuries.

A late strike by James Isaia snatched Premier League leader Floreat Athena a 2-2 draw with Fremantle Spirit at Litis Stadium

The report on the last 1-1 draw between th two aint as encouraging as i would have liked nor as good as those on the bayswater forum said-

Honours were even at the WA Spanish Club where the southern suburbs derby between Fremantle Spirit and Cockburn City produced a 1-1 draw. A drab first half gave way to an end to end attacking affair in the second as referee Angelo Nardi handed out three penalties, two of which were converted. Fremantle’s best opportunity of the first half fell to Sebastian Booysen but his close-range flick from a corner whizzed the wrong side of the upright. On the stroke of half-time Cockburn should have taken the lead when Jason Dos Santos played a delightful ball to Marco Aleksic but with only the goalkeeper to beat he rolled the shot past the post. Cockburn dominated the early stages of the second half with Steve Grant called on to make a smart block to deny John Mirco. A great exchange down the left involving John Mirco, Jason Dos Santos and Aleksic saw the latter curl in a back post cross where an unmarked Dean Wallace blazed high from only a few metres. The games first penalty arrived in the 66th minute after a foul on Dean Wallace, but Jason Dos Santos crashed the spot kick into the post and with the follow-up Michael Mirco shot across the face of goal. Within a couple of minutes Fremantle had a penalty of their own for a handball decision against Callum Roberts, and Dale Wingell stepped up to calmly stroke the ball high into the net with Dino Pacella going the wrong way. Jason Barrera twice went close to wrapping up the points with a couple of vicious strikes that were both deflected wide by Pacella. The third penalty of the afternoon was awarded in the 86th minute after veteran Alex Christie was ruled to have handled the ball, and this time it was John Mirco who rocketed the ball past Grant to bring the teams level.

WEEKEND IN PREVIEW

The bottom of the table meeting of Wanneroo City and Sorrento comes under the microscope as the Western Australian Football Website Match of the Week . Wanneroo will be confident of getting a result on home soil following their recent improvement and key roles beckon for Derek Cooke, Gary Andrews, Mark Donnelly and goalkeeper Kevin Miller. Sorrento, last seasons Premier League champion, really have struggled with injury so far in 2007 and if the likes of Steve McDonald, Stuart Banks, Glen Thomas and Tod Harnwell are firing on all cylinders they should collect their first points of the winter.

At Dorrien Gardens, Perth S.C. are widely tipped to take the points over an Inglewood United side which is down on luck at the moment. Western Knights made the journey north to face E.C.U. Joondalup in what promises to be a fiery encounter. Fremantle Spirit meet Cockburn City in the local derby at the WA Spanish Club. Armadale will be seeking their first win of the campaign when they host Swan I.C. The Sunday meeting of Stirling Lions and Floreat Athena at Macedonia Park will be broadcast live on 90.5fm.

PREMIER LEAGUE, ROUND SEVEN (Wanneroo City v Sorrento by Kerry Slater)

Stirling Lions displayed great character in coming from behind with ten men to earn a 2-2 draw Floreat Athena in Sunday’s blockbuster at Macedonia Park. Early saves by Phil Straker and Vas Vujacic were only a taster of things to come and ensured the bumper crowd of close to 1,500 were riveted to their seats from the outset. Andy Brown looked to have put the home side in front on 10 minutes by heading in at a corner, however, referee Ton Klaver disallowed the effort for a push on Adam Bachiller. Unperturbed, Stirling pressed on and four minutes later David Dugdale scrapped the ball past the advancing goalkeeper and into the net from Ludovic Boi’s delivery. Floreat responded with increased intensity and on 22 minutes equalised as Branimir Mikulic’s flick on deflected into the net off defender Kevin Henderson. As the half came it was the visitors who were the more lively and took a deserved lead into the break after Boima Karpeh’s cross from the left was met by Mikulic who fired past Straker. The second half opened with Floreat creating the better opportunities of which neither Bachiller nor Karpeh could capitalise. Stirling suffered a setback when Tom Jones was red carded on 73 minutes for his challenge on Mikulic. The introduction of Vas Kalogeracos had almost immediate effect for the home team as he combined with Phil Arnold to send Dugdale clear but the otherwise lethal finisher disappointing shot straight at Vas Vujacic. With two minutes left Stirling drew level when Keith Brown swung a corner directly into the net amid protestations that Floreat ‘keeper Vas Vujacic had been impeded. There was still time for one final drama as Peter Coci was one-on-one with Straker who expertly narrowed the angle and blocked the shot.

Barry Wood struck a late winner to earned Perth S.C. a dramatic 3-2 win over a gallant Inglewood United line-up at Dorrien Gardens. Inglewood started the match brightly and almost took the lead when Kevin Griffiths’ sweet strike was swatted away by goalkeeper Gareth Deeg. The visitors continually applied the pressure throughout the opening stanza and effectively prevented Perth from getting into rhythm. However, it would be the Blues that went ahead on 35 minutes through captain Robbie Puca who converted from the penalty spot after Sadmir Jakupovic’s foul on Wood. Perth could have increased the lead two minutes into the second half when confusion in the Inglewood defence saw Trent Kay’s bobbled effort bounce off the base of the post. A minute later Inglewood levelled after gaining a penalty of their own for a handball decision against Michael Ord, and Daniel Neiderberger coolly slotted past Deeg. Nikita Rukavytsya restored Perth’s lead on 68 minutes by rifling past Oliver Taseski from the top edge of the 18-yard box. With Jason Colli a constant menace to the home team with his darting runs down the right, Inglewood stepped up a gear heading into the closing stages. Their reward came in the 80th minute when Niederberger pushed forward before placing his shot into the bottom corner much to the delight of the travelling contingent. The game would be settled three minutes later by Wood who caught out a hesitant defence before flicking past Taseski for his fourth goal in five weeks. The big striker could have ended the day with a hat-trick but was unable to find the target when the opportunity twice arose in the final few minutes.

Armadale won their first game of the Premier League season by defeating Swan I.C. 3-2 in a fiercely contested encounter at Alfred Skeet Oval. Sustained early pressure from the home side was rewarded after 11 minutes when Scott Paterson’s free-kick found an unmarked Darren Kingston who headed in at close-range. Armadale’s dominance resulted in a second goal on 32 minutes as Madeley’s cross was spilt by Daniel Agudelo and in the blink of an eye Jason Goodwin had lashed the ball in from close-range. Swan responded through the very next attack in which Tom Shepheard delivered the ball from the left for John Monterosso to fire past Cyril Sharrock. It was only now that the visitors came to life and not long after they were had appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Matthew Cheeseman. Swan laid siege to their opponents goal as Sharrock gathered possession under pressure from Shepheard, and Dom Ando fired high when well positioned. A deserved equaliser arrived ten minutes from half-time when Justin Hugo’s cross was poorly dealt with by the defence allowing Brendan Knox to find the net from 5-metres. Shortly before the interval Swan lost Agudelo after he clashed with Kingston and was rushed to hospital suffering a lower back injury. The second half began with Swan in full flight and McStea went close to putting the visitors ahead twice in as many minutes. However, Armadale weren’t to be outdone and Goodwin fired wide while another Kingston header flashed the wrong side of the post. The 66th minute produced the deciding goal via a quick counterattack in which Stephen Skilandis’ deep cross was put away by Kingston. Swan worked tirelessly in their search for a third goal but found it difficult to break down a defence under the command of Dusan Macura and Daryl Platten.

Sorrento picked up their first points of the campaign by mauling Wanneroo City 7-2 at Kingsway Sporting Complex. Played in damp conditions, it took the visiting side just 16 minutes to go ahead as a neat exchange between Lewis Flatt and Jared Love enabled Glen Thomas to send a sweet shot into the net from just outside the 18-yard box. Four minutes later the team in yellow doubled their advantage when Stuart Banks’ cross from the left was allowed to bounce by the Wanneroo defence and Love powered the ball in with a diving header. Banks hit a long cross field pass in the 29th minute which Todd Harnwell retrieved and cut back to Thomas who promptly fired goal number three past Kevin Miller. Wanneroo pulled one back eight minutes into the second half when Derek Cooke and Ryan Newhill linked up for David Houston to shoot into the bottom corner. The Gulls three-goal buffer was restored soon after by Love who gained possession inside his own half and jinxed his way down the left before finding the net from an acute angle. On 64 minutes Wanneroo went down to ten men after Craig Cheeseman was issued a second yellow card for dissent. Sorrento wasted no time in capitalising through a Thomas corner was met by Danny Taylor whose downward header bounced over Miller and into the roof of the net. Cooke was rewarded for a strong display on 82 minutes when he evaded his marker and belted the ball past Young. However, Sorrento weren’t finished and Steven Worthy slotted an easy opportunity past Miller, then in the 86th minute Love completed his hat-trick by shooting into the bottom corner. Wanneroo ended the day with nine players on the park after the late dismissal of Houston for a challenge on Young.

E.C.U. Joondalup knocked over Western Knights 1-0 when they meet in the northern suburbs. The games solitary goal arrived five minutes into the second half via Scott Blackmore. Further details of this game were not forthcoming from either of the participating clubs.
