Drogs pair hit with season KO
July 27, 2007
Drogheda United captain Declan O’Brien and fellow forward Shane Barrett are likely to miss the remainder of the eircom League of Ireland season.
Both players picked up knee injuries in separate Setanta Sports Cup encounters against Linfield earlier this season.
Barrett was stretchered off just five minutes into Drogheda’s season opener against the Blues in February, while O’Brien sustained his problem in the Setanta final in May.
The club has confirmed that Barrett is in rehabilitation following surgery to repair his cruciate ligament, while O’Brien – who remains Drogs top scorer with five league goals – will have an internal scope examination in two weeks time. He is expected to require surgery, which will be carried out at that point.
In better news, key defender Jason Gavin is set to return within the next fortnight after recovering from a shoulder injury and Ollie Cahill has resumed training after a broken ankle.
The eircom League leaders take on Waterford United on Friday night, with the
visitors possibly without as many as seven first-choice players for the trip to Boyneside.
