What exactly were they supposed to do to stop it?

Once things kick of riot wise getting the genie back in the bottle is very difficult. It shouldn't have been allowed to get to that stage. Alcohol consumption on a massive scale didn't help things and at a minimum not selling alcohol from the early hours (especially in off licenses) would have been a massive plus. Instead the decision was made to make a quick buck and consequences be damned.

Paddys day in ffice:smarttags" />Dublin was a nightmare for the last few years due to drunken mobs from early in the morning making things a misery for people who wanted to just enjoy the parade. Over 150 were arrested two years ago. Tourists were routinely robbed and mugged and some misfortunate usually ended up in a critical condition in intensive care.

This year off licenses were stopped selling booze before 7 in the evening and public order offences were down 80%. Friends who went into town said it was the most enjoyable in years.

Expecting some drunken football fans to act like human beings and not animals is an optimistic view of human nature. Without alcohol fuelling the mob things would not have been anyway as bad as they turned out.

Anyone as incapacitated as some of the people on TV were last night should have been locked up. For their own good and for everyone elses. The police were outnumbered badly and public order suffered accordingly.
