Re: NFL Week 4
Quote:
Baltimore (2-2) at San Francisco (2-2)
As if having the NFL's worst offense wasn't bad enough, the San Francisco 49ers now are missing their starting quarterback.
Things are unlikely to get any easier against one of the league's most dominating defenses of the decade when they host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
San Francisco (2-2) will be without starter Alex Smith for at least one game after he separated his right shoulder in last Sunday's 23-3 loss to Seattle. Smith, who is 11-16 while starting every game for the 49ers since Oct. 9, 2005, was injured after being sacked by Seahawks defensive tackle Rocky Bernard on the third play of the game.
Veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer replaced Smith and completed 12 of 33 passes for 128 yards with two interceptions and took five sacks. Dilfer was sacked five times in his first start since Nov. 27, 2005, while with Cleveland.
Dilfer could command the offense beyond this meeting with Baltimore (2-2) as Smith said he completely tore both ligaments that connect his shoulder blade to his collarbone. Smith hopes to return following the 49ers' bye next week, but is aware he could be sidelined longer than that.
"They wouldn't have put an exact date on it, but yeah, a few weeks," said Smith, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2005. "Having the bye week helps, but I'll just push it as hard as I can and try to get back as soon as possible."
Smith had been off to a shaky start this year, completing 43 of 84 passes for 461 yards and a touchdown, and the 49ers offense has struggled. San Francisco has just five touchdowns through four games while averaging 14.0 points -- tied for 29th in the NFL -- and has averaged a league-low 213.2 total yards.
"In the first two weeks, you get by with it because you win," 49ers left tackle Jonas Jennings said. "When you lose, (mistakes) get magnified."
San Francisco has been limited to fewer than 200 yards in three of four games, including last Sunday with 184 yards -- 79 on Frank Gore's 16 carries. Gore established a franchise record and was the NFL's third-leading rusher with 1,695 yards last year, but hasn't had a 100-yard game this season after having nine in 2006.
Ending that drought against Baltimore won't be easy. The Ravens have the league's fourth-best run defense, giving up 71.0 yards a game, and have not allowed a 100-yard rusher in seven games since surrendering 120 to Kansas City's Larry Johnson on Dec. 10.
Over the previous four seasons, the Ravens have limited opposing offenses to 281.3 yards per game. Baltimore boasted the NFL's best defense last year, holding teams to averages of 264.1 yards and 12.6 points, but those numbers have ballooned this season to 301.8 and 22.5, respectively.
Baltimore allowed more than 300 yards for the third consecutive game last Sunday in a 27-13 loss at Cleveland. The Ravens, who allowed 17 fourth-quarter points in a 26-23 win over Arizona the previous week, fell behind 14-0 to the Browns after one quarter and trailed the entire game.
"Anytime you give a team 14 points like we did, it's a tough mountain to climb," Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis said. "Anytime you have turnovers and give them a short field the way we did, you have to ask yourself if we came to play."
The Ravens didn't record a sack for the first time in 25 games since a loss to Cincinnati on Nov. 27, 2005.
They may have a good chance to get back on track against Dilfer, who hadn't taken a snap in nearly two years before last week.
The 35-year-old Dilfer quarterbacked the Ravens to an 11-1 record as their starter in 2000 and helped them win the Super Bowl, but that was his final game in a Baltimore uniform. In his only start against the Ravens since then, Dilfer was sacked four times and went 16-of-30 for 147 yards with an interception for Cleveland in a 16-3 loss on Oct. 16, 2005.
Baltimore has had its own injury problems at quarterback this year, with Steve McNair missing one game and getting knocked out of two others. McNair, however, finally played a full game last Sunday and did well, completing a career-high 34 passes in 53 attempts for a season-best 307 yards and a touchdown.
Running back Willis McGahee rushed for a season-high 104 yards on 14 carries as the Ravens totaled 418 yards, their most since gaining 421 in a win at Tennessee on Nov. 12.
These teams last met on Nov. 30, 2003 in Baltimore, and the Ravens won 44-6.

Re: NFL Week 4
I have to agree with that and am on baltimore as well. Perhaps unwisely I am trusting the saints one more time. Surely with the bye week they can have come up with an offensive plan to score on carolina's mediocre defense and their so-far woeful defense will hopefully do enough against David Carr - oh now I spell it out like that I'm not sure they can do it
I am also being drawn to cleveland, which I've seen at +17 in places which just seems too big and new england's offence is going to misfire sometimes.

Re: NFL Week 4
Just for the record, I resisted the temptation to back cleveland. I am probably just having one more bet today which is chicago(+3.5) in the late game.

I just think that things have been going so well for Green Bay and so badly for Chicago that this might be one of those games where the roles are reversed and Chicago gets the breaks - and boy they need them at the moment.
