Re: Golf : Ryder Cup - September 22-24

Good Call Pie-chucker about the TIE - I had forgot that but I see handicap betting is available so I might have a dabble on that.

I've booked tomorrow off so I can sit and watch it so as long as it's good viewing bring it on.

In my heart I'll be shouting for the home team but in my head I know I've got a betting slip in my pocket which I think is a good bet.

Only thing in the GB/IRE teams favour is the course advantage but a few rounds will soon clue the USA up and with the 'form' players like Woods it will be a close call.

Re: Golf : Ryder Cup - September 22-24

At 1st glance I'd say that Casey/Karlsson and Garcia/Olazabal should be pretty big favourites for their matches. Woods/Furyk vs. Monty/Harrington looks a 50-50 match, the Americans better players, but the Europeans better matchplayers, so I'll be looking to back whoever's odds against.. The final match is similar, but I'd give the edge to the Americans in that one.

So a prediction of 2.5 - 1.5 to Europe for the 1st morning.

Ok, odds for the 4 balls from bet365 are

Harrington/Monty 2.70
vs. Woods/Furyk 1.72 Tie 6.50
Casey/Karlsson 1.83 vs. Cink/Henry 2.50 Tie 6.50
Garcia/Olazabal 1.66 vs. Toms/Wetterich 2.87 Tie 6.50
Westwood/Clarke 2.30 vs. Mickleson/Di Marco 2.00 Tie 6.00

There will probably be better odds arround, but at first glance Casey/Karlsson looks an absolutely stunning bet @ 1.83. Casey won the World Matchplay, with Karlsson reaching the semi-final, and with these 2 big hitters you can expect plenty of birdies in this 4 ball format.

Harrington/Monty looks good too, always worth backing against Woods in 4 balls/4 somes, though Furyk is a better partner for him.

The last 2 matches look to be priced up about right.

From memory (and I may be wrong) Europe usually have a pretty strong first day don't they?

I wouldn't give them a prayer in the first game having said that and I'll be snapping up the best price on the Tiger and his mate.

My other bet will be Mickleson and Demarco.

Let's get it on

Re: Golf : Ryder Cup - September 22-24

Ive just spent around 6 hours reading reports ,write ups, previews etc etc and it all points in 1 direction ,a win for Europe .

To cut a long thread short ,coz i could write pages on this subject ,heres the basic outline of my reasons to back Europe.

The Europeans claim this is the best European team EVER , and thats saying something considering that they won the last ryder cup by 9 points ! All the team bar 1 player (paul mcginley) are at the top of their game , and the forecast windy conditions will suit the Europeans down to the ground ,and will be totally against the yanks who are much more at home playing in dry calm conditions .

The European team is of an equal level of quality throughout ,a nice even spread , whereas the yank team is very top heavy ,with Woods, Furyk, Di Marco and Mickleson the only real top players , the rest are either well out of form or very unproven , they have 4 rookies who will be all at sea in this competition and who arent exactly in top form either , and even Mickleson hasnt done anything since his fold up in the US open when bang in contention . Their wild card went to Scott Verplank who hasnt won for 5 years , and the real form players were ousted from the team because of the mad qualifying they have over there ,you get 5 times as many points for this season as opposed to last season , hence the reason we see Brett Wetterlich, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Zach Johnson . Old stalwarts David Toms ,Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell are all woefully out of sorts ,as is wildcard Verplank .Leaving the big 4 ,and of those Mickleson isnt at his best , Woods was well out of sorts at the recent matchplay tournament missing many easy putts (never a good sign), Di Marco`s just lost his mother and has played 1 good tourny all year, Micklesons played awful since his US open crash , and that leaves Jim Furyk and he cant get 18 points on his own can he !!

The Europeans are much more balanced talent and formwise , Sergio Garcia always does well in these match ups , as does Padraig Harrington and Colin Montgomerie has been in top form recently ,Luke Donald is at the top of his game ,Darren Clarkes a Ryder cup veteran who always picks up his fare share of points ,as does Lee Westwood , and Paul Casey recently won the World Matchplay battering anotheyank Shaun Micheel in the biggest ever matchplay margin 10+8 !! The 2 swedes Stenson + Karlsson have 4 wins between them this season and are hitting the ball well , Olazabal is another veteran whos experience will be crucial to help the young guns ,and he gets a few points himself here and there , and then theres Mcginley whos badly out of sorts , but may well be rejuvenated by the Ryder cup seeing as it will bring fond memories for him .

A recent interview with a top US player who didnt make the team claimed that this US team would struggle to put pressure on a stiff breeze nevermind the European team ,and they fly over knowing the are well up against it . They havent been able to practise much as the weather has prevented hardly any golf and this will also count against them .

Theres many bets i could do , but i like to take small chances rather than big ones and i see the current 1.96 on betfair for a european victory as very very big indeed . Theyve been cut to as low as 1.60 with VC bet ,and they seem much nearer the mark. Id take a tie going into the final round as in the final 12 singles europe will mop up the points , but im expecting a lead of some sorts and then its all over red rover !

£50 Europe to win the Ryder Cup @ 1.96 (Betfair)

Regards

Re: Golf : Ryder Cup - September 22-24

Any reason why you think Woods/Furyk are such a good bet ODM? Woods is a notoriously bad matchplayer, partcularly in 4 balls/4 somes, and has lost 11 of his last 20 Ryder Cup matches. Monty/Harrington is Europe's strongest pairing, and Monty has lost just 2 of his last 19 in this competition.

Also remember Woods lost in R1 of the World Matchplay to Shaun Micheel last week.

Re: Golf : Ryder Cup - September 22-24

Edit - In answer to Hippy Dave's question.....

All form is bollocks in a competition like this. You can forget everything that's gone before (which goes against my comment about Europe usually having a good first day earler ).

As it happens, Furyk is going to be the man in my view but on the subject of Tiger's shite matchplay record, I'm not unduly worried. He plays the holes and if he plays them to the best of his ability, nobody can touch him. If he doesn't (or he tries to be too clever) then I'd be happy to take evens on Furyk if he was playing the other two on his own.

I'm no big golf expert but this is the one occasion I wll be putting my cash down and taking a few risks. If I'm losing big at the end of day 2 then I'll slink off with my tail between my legs

I won't be able to put up my afternoon bets tomorrow as I won't have access to a computer but you can bet I'll be looking closely with a view to backing matches with Harrington or Monty (after tomorrow that is) Casey, Furyk and Mickelson in. I won't be taking any stupid short odds though. 4/5 is about the lowest I'll go.

My bets so far are

Woods and Furyk to beat Monty and Harrington at evens 30 pts

DiMarco and Mickelson to beat Clarke and Westwood at 11/10 20 points

USA to win tournement with 1.5 pt handicap 4/5 70 points

Re: Golf : Ryder Cup - September 22-24

Call it the proverbial 'gut feeling', but I am rather concerned about the favouritism that has been tagged on Europe, which is probably the first time ever!! USA seem to be enjoying this underdog tag and I'm sure they'll try and capitalise on this. I reckon that the unknown's for the USA will shine (as have our boys done so in the past) and the Tiger will at long last take off his Ryder Cup millstone from around his neck and along with Furyk demolish their way through. I'm not a golf watcher by any stretch of the imagination (whad'ya mean you can tell!) but from my general observations I reckon the value now is definatelty with the Yanks and I've got to take the 7/5 as I reckon we won't be seeing that type of price for a few years to come..

USA for the outright @ 7/5

Well I think the general concensus here is that people who admit to knowing fcuk all about golf are backing the US, and everyone else is backing Europe.

Just to clarify that bit, Winrew...those prices are for winning the 1st Day Fourballs.

To lead after the 1st day is
Europe 11/10 bet365
USA 6/4 paddypower.

definite value in Europe @ 11/10 bet365 after looking at the pairings of the morning matches.

Just in , so will pore over the pairings a bit more to see how the Capts choices could impact on other bets and try to nab any value.
