Conference South 2005/6

odds from www.bet365.com

O.k. I'm not really a short-odds favourite backer but I'm going to have a largish bet on Weymouth to win the Nationwide South at 5/2.

I've been looking into it as I fancied Cambridge (12/1 - more of later) but several factors have swayed me to go for Weymouth.

First - their recent signings:

=====================================
Tuesday 14 June 2005

BOSS Garry Hill today hailed his trio of new signings as `born winners' who can help fire Weymouth to promotion.
Cardiff City goalkeeper Arran Lee-Barrett, Shrewsbury full-back Trevor Challis and Chester City midfielder Andy Harris have all finally completed their moves to the Terras.
And Hill, who has already secured the return of defender Steve Tully this summer, is now closing in on Peterborough United striker Wayne Purser.
He told Echosport: "To be successful in our league you need to have a spine of the side who are big, strong and not afraid to get stuck in.
"In Arran, Trevor and Andy, we've managed to bring players to Weymouth who have proven ability but are still hungry for success.
"It has taken a little time to get the deals finalised but I'm delighted everything is now sorted and Arran, Trevor and Andy will officially join us from July 1."
Midfielder Harris, 28, moves to the Wessex Stadium after being released from Coca-Cola League Two side Chester City.
Hill said he was delighted at the capture of the former Liverpool trainee and Leyton Orient skipper who has penned a one-year deal.
"Andy is a very competitive player who, like the other lads we've signed, is a born winner," he said.
"He can play either in midfield or at full-back and has stacks of Football League experience, at Southend and then Leyton Orient.
"He's big and strong, can mix it up in midfield when the going gets tough and is someone who will complement the rest of the squad well."
Left-back Challis, 29, has also signed a one-year deal after favouring the Terras over Kidderminster Harriers and Rushden and Diamonds.
"Trevor has years of experience at Queen's Park Rangers and Bristol Rovers and that pedigree will be invaluable to us next season," said Hill.
"He was nearly ever present for Shrewsbury at a higher level than ourselves last season and that will stand us in good stead."
The Terras boss is also backing
ex-Norwich City youngster Lee-Barrett, who joins on a two-year deal, to give current first choice keeper Jason Matthews a run for his money.
"Aaran is a big imposing keeper and although he was only fourth choice at Cardiff, I've seen enough of him to believe he has a good future ahead of him," said Hill.
The trio will all relocate to Dorset before starting full-time training with the club next month.
Meanwhile Terras bosses are hopeful of capturing Purser after the former Hornchurch striker was told he was free to leave Peterborough.
Hill said: "Talks are ongoing with Wayne and his agent and, at this moment in time, all I can say is that he is very much a player I'd like to sign.
"He has been told he is now free to leave Peterborough by their new manager Mark Wright and I'm hoping we can sort things out in the next 72 hours or so."
=====================================

So, the three players already signed have decent lower league experience. Purser (who would make that oft repeated switch to play for a former boss) banged in 15 goals in 15 games whilst new Weymouth boss led Hornchurch to the top of the league last season. After his step up to Division 1 he notched 6 in 15.

I remember last season that a certain amount of turmoil was present within the club. Steve Claridge began the season as manager, then after he was sacked Steve Jonstone (brother of Yeovil's Gary) came in for a few months before Hill arrived. Some interesting stuff about how much Cladridge was on and it's effect on the club can be found here:

http://www.theterras.co.uk/website/n...bankruptcy.htm

All of this is unsettling from a punting view. From reading the press releases it appears the Chairman, Mark Harrison, is determined to get Weymouth promoted at all costs. He even sacked Jonstone after he let him live in his house and enroll his kids in school!

I was encouraged though by his "I want us to go top and stay there" quote for the new season.

His appointment of Hill at the back-end of last season proved succesful. They only lost 2 of their last 8 or so games (to Champions Grays and Cambridge) and finished just 2 points of the play-offs in the end, which would've been a remarkable achievement.

Weymouth also turned full-time last season which is definitely a factor in this division as both Hornchurch and Grays showed last term.

So, in summary I'm going to take 8 points on the 5/2.

Cambridge finished second to Grays last season and had many decent results. Surprisingly, they were a better away side at times than at home.

They've re-signed the majority of their squad whilst adding to it with the impressive capture of Jamie Southam, Hornchurch's player of the year last season. The view on the websites and forums is that this is their strongest squad for years. This will further be added to if they're succesfull in their capture of Paul Booth from Welling. He scored 20 goals at this level last season, despite Welling finishing bottom.

For me the odds of 12/1 for a strenghtened team who finished 2nd last season is a solid E/W proposition.

Good Luck All,

AMP

Re: Conference South 2005/6

Cheers komp and thanks for sticking the odds at the top - I need to reread the counciling WAS got on the old screen grabs as I haven't got the foggiest. WAS - maybe you can give me a lesson mate ???!

Anywho, moving on here's an update on what Gary Hill has to say on the squad situation at Weymouth and the cash situation aswell (which is reassuring because if they did a Hornchurch when top of the league I'd be well p!ssed)

Oh - it's from the Weymouth local and this site is cracking for all things Conference South http://www.confsouth.co.uk/index.html Good work fellas

HILL WON'T SPLASH THE CASH
by Matt Pitman

Thursday 16 June 2005

THE Terras won't be breaking the bank to bring success to the Wessex Stadium, according to Garry Hill.

The Weymouth boss has already made five summer signings - and is lining up three more acquisitions.

But Hill insists his new recruits - Steve Tully, Arran Lee-Barrett, Andy Harris, Trevor Challis and Tony Taggart - will provide value for money.

He told Echosport: "One of the things I've been determined to do this summer is bring players into the football club who provide value for money.

"With all due respect to previous regimes at Weymouth, the days of us signing people on long, expensive contracts are gone.

"Any player I sign will be on the right terms for the football club and that's been the case with the new recruits so far this summer.

"We're not throwing money at people - the lure of full-time football is often all it takes to persuade players to join us.

"A large percentage of my signings have joined on one-year contracts because that offers the club a little bit of flexibility in the future.

"It means we can move players on if things don't work out without a large cost.

Competition

"At the same time, those contracts can also be re-negotiated this time next year if a player impresses."

Hill said he hopes to make up to three more signings before the start of the Conference South season in August, with two strikers on his shopping list.

And the manager also wants at least two players to be contesting every position.

"It's important to have competition in the squad," said Hill, "and that's what I'm trying to create this summer.

"Defensively, I think things are pretty settled now and we've assembled a nice mix of experience and youth.

"We've got two good goalkeepers, Trevor Challis and Tony Taggart competing for a left back spot and Steve Tully and Brad Thomas on the opposite side of the defence.

"Then we have people like Matt Bound, Roy O'Brien and Dave Waterman who are solid and experienced central defenders.

"My priority now is at the other end of the park - ideally I'd like four people competing for two spots.

"With Kirk Jackson and Chukki Eribenne strong and powerful

players, I'd like to try and bring in two nippy and lively strikers.

"If that happens, we'll have a dangerous and varied attack which I'd like to think will trouble defences next season."

Re: Conference South 2005/6

Right, it does look like I'm all alone in here but I don't give a fcuk. Why? Because I've just equalled my single biggest bet by backing Weymouth again.

The reason? Well, for once in my life I've got some cash in the bank and I really do think that the new Chelsea of non-league football will take this league apart like Gretna did up in Scotland last year. bet 365 have already cut the odds to 9/4 but you can still get the 5/2 at Corals and Sky.

The new bet was prompted by another new signing - Ritchie Hanlon from Lincon city. He scored four times in 22 matches for the imps from midfield and has been brouight in to get some more goals two levels below. That makes 7 signings so far and more are expected in the early part of next week. If Purser does sign (see my earlier post) then I'll have another 10 points if the price holds. Jason Dodd (ex-Southampton) is also being linked but I'd be surprised if whoever comes doesn't have league experience.

Anywho, I'll bang the write up from nonleague daily at the bottom.

Good Luck all,

AMP

====================================
Garry Hill, manager of Nationwide South club Weymouth, believes Ritchie Hanlon can solve the Terras’ midfield goalscoring problems.

The former Chelsea apprentice has signed a two-year deal with the Terras after being released by last year's Coca-Cola League Two beaten play-off finalists, Lincoln City.

"If you look back at Weymouth's recent league records," explained Hill, "then goals from midfield, or the lack of them, have been a big problem. It's something I'm very conscious of and that's why we have gone out and signed Ritchie Hanlon.

"At 6ft 2in he's a big lad and obviously that height is a great asset. He's a tough player who loves going forward and the sort who'll score you ten or fifteen goals a season.

"Certainly that's the kind of target I'll be setting him and I'm sure he'll achieve it. He's another quality player coming to Weymouth from the Football League and I'm delighted because there were a few other clubs after his signature."

Hanlon, who scored four times in twenty-two starts for the Imps last term, began his career as a Stamford Bridge junior in 1994. After failing to make the grade with the Blues, he then joined Southend United.

Spells at Welling United, Rushden & Diamonds and Peterborough followed before the Londoner arrived at Stevenage Borough at the start of last season. From there he joined Lincoln on loan before moving to Sincil Bank permanently in December.

Hill added: "I know plenty about Ritchie and I think he's just the sort of player we need. One thing he has got is plenty of experience and that's invaluable at this level."

Hanlon's arrival at the Wessex Stadium could signal the start of another busy period of transfer activity as the Terras prepare to turn full-time in July.

Hill added: "Things are shaping up well and I'm pleased with the look of the squad. The support and help I've received from the chairman Martyn Harrison has been unbelievable and I can't thank him enough.

"There are still a few pieces of the jigsaw missing although I'm hoping they'll be in place early next week. I might be on holiday with the family overseas but that doesn't mean I'm not working flat out, trying to bring players to the club.

"Up front is the area I'm working on hardest and it's no secret that I've got a particular player in mind. I can't say who it is at this stage although I'm getting closer to doing a deal every day."

Although Hill refused to name names, it's believed the player he's on the verge of bringing to the south coast is Peterborough striker Wayne Purser.

He explained: "Like I say, I'm not naming names but it's no secret I like the look of Wayne Purser. But to get him we'll have to hold off competition from a lot of bigger clubs so we'll just have to wait and see what happens."

Oh, forgot to mention that 4th favourites for this league - Farnboro' could be on there way back to the conference aswell, due to the cambridge United situation. Which I think would help this bet (would they change the odds on the bets I've already put on though?).

Re: Conference South 2005/6

Right, time to choose the right icon thingy. Let's see....

What! No bananas!!!!! Ok, :drums

Purser has signed for Weymouth on a two year deal!

Here's the report:

TERRAS manager Garry Hill is a `proud' man today after capturing long-time transfer target Wayne Purser.

The 25-year-old striker

finally penned a two-year deal last night following more than six weeks of `tense' negotiations with his former Hornchurch boss.

Purser joins Weymouth for a undisclosed fee from League Two side Peterborough United, despite having a year remaining on his contract at London Road.

The former Barnet and Leyton Orient man joined Posh last November after Hornchurch hit financial problems, but was last month told he could leave by new manager Mark Wright.

"Right now I'm the proudest man in world," said Hill. "Everyone knows I've been tracking Wayne for a couple of months and it's fantastic that all the hard work has paid off.

"Obviously I know the lad well because he was with me at Hornchurch and I rate him very, very highly. He's sharp around the box, has plenty of pace and is a proven goalscorer at this level and higher.

"He scored 15 goals in 17 games at Hornchurch and something like six in 13 for Peterborough. That sort of record speaks for itself and I honestly think he can get even better.

"It's a tremendous signing for the club and I couldn't be happier. It's been a tense few weeks working on this one but we've finally got our man.

"It doesn't mean we'll be taking our foot off the gas in terms of trying to strengthen the squad further, but this is a very big piece in the jigsaw. If the season started tomorrow then I'd be very satisfied with the squad we have in place."

Despite spending most of his family holiday in Portugal last week on the phone talking to Purser and his agent, Hill today played down his part in the negotiations.

Instead he heaped praise on Terras chairman Martyn Harrison and chief executive Gary Calder for securing the 5ft 9in attacker's signature.

"The part Martyn Harrison has played in all this has been immense," admitted the manager. "Without him Wayne Purser wouldn't be here because there were bigger clubs than us trying to sign him. He has put both his money and expertise on the line to bring success to Weymouth and he now requires the support of the town to go with it.

"Gary Calder has also worked tirelessly on this deal and all the others we've done during the summer and I'm really grateful to both men.

"I came to this club because it was a sleeping giant which the chairman was determined to wake. He's done his bit by setting the budgets and supporting our team building efforts and he really does deserve to see the Weymouth public turn out in huge numbers next season."

Purser's arrival at the Wessex Stadium means Hill now has four out and out strikers at his

disposal, with Chukki Eribenne, Daniel Webb and Kirk Jackson completing the quartet.

"I've got four quality forwards and two shirts available," said Hill, "and that's the way I like it. Competition for places is both important and healthy and there are certainly no plans to move anyone out.

"It will be interesting to see how the four lads respond over the

next few weeks. In my experience players either rise to that sort

of challenge quickly or not at

all.

"I'm confident the response will be good from all four and it's up to them to earn a starting place come the start of the season."

Skybet have now cut their odds to 6/4.
Bet 365 cut their odds about a week ago to 9/4
Coral's still go 5/2.

Will be willing to bet that won't last though....

Re: Conference South 2005/6

Hey matey. Good idea to start a conf south thread- I find it a much more predictable league to punt on than the north (although have had some of nuneaton @9's).

I fully agree with your Weymouth tip. I also think dark horses might be St Albans- @25's could be well worth a e/w bet.
