Re: English Non-League 13th Aug

I'm a bit behind on the non-league scene but I'll be adding to this thread as the week progresses and hopefully odds for the Unibond come out.

Some of you may recall that I tipped Weymouth for the Conference South, along with Cambridge and Lewes as good E/w bets. Well, 'muff are kicking off at home with a game against Dean Holdsworth's Havant and Waterloo. The odds of 1.5 are too low to attract my support as I am waiting to see if the team gel, Havant have spent some money and 1.5 doesn't enthrall me.

Lewes (who've had an excellent pre-season a 3-1 vivtory at home to Aldershot among this and made some good signings) face a tricky opening game at home to relegated Farnborough, and I will give this one the swerve and take a watching brief.

Cambridge Utd (5/6 Stan james) have excelent claims to see off a much depleted WSM. Last season WSM we're inconsitent all season and now they've trimmed their wage bill and let some "senior" players go. They've also got a goalkeeping problem:

From thisisbristol.com:

Gregan (WSM Boss) has been forced to offload the experienced quartet of Billy Clark, Mark McGregor, Steve Jenkins and Steve Cowe in order to balance the Woodspring Stadium books and has recruited, in their place, younger players who remain untried in the Conference.

He revealed: "I had to get those guys off the wage bill and had no choice in the matter. We were spending more than we were earning last season and it was quite clear that we had to get our financial house in order.

"Now we have a squad we can afford."

"We did well to stay up last season, but if we can maintain our status at the end of this season, it will represent an even bigger achievement."

In contrast City have made a number of solid signings including Booth from Welling who scored 20 in this division last year and notched about a goal-a-game pre-season. Hist stike partner sadler notched 18.

They beat MK Dons 3-0 in pre-season and their manager had this to say after a recent win against Chelmsford (who play a level below I think) by the same scoreline:

(From their offical site)

It was a very good work-out for us against Chelmsford. As regards the tackling, there were less flying about than there would have been had we been playing Histon in a pre-season friendly. It was a decent excercise with the real action to kick off next weekend. I didn’t expect it to be anything less really. Everyone has come out of the game well, there are no injury problems, considering it was played at a full on pace. These players can look after themselves on the pitch.

Up front, I think Dave Sadler and Paul Booth are going to be more than a handful for defences in the league this season. They are both probably their own worst critics, and they are both always looking to improve, which is great and I’m looking forward to watching them play.

The big kick-off is now nearly upon us and we can expect a rugged encounter with Weston-super-M are to start with. Games with them are usually like that. They are usually strong and well organised although they have lost the services of Marc McGregor who has joined Hinckley United. They still have Mark Mckeevor who is one of the best left wingers in the league, as well as Lewis Hogg who is a fairly aggresive midfielder. It will be a testing afternoon for us, we cannot afford to underestimate them at all and we won’t. They do have a problem in the goalkeeping department. Ryan Northmore, their regular keeper, is out of action with a leg injury and I’m not sure who his replacement will be.

We are looking to get off the mark with three points and, hopefully, there will be a good crowd to see us do it. We have got to be looking to around the 500 mark. We’ll be the only football in Cambridge when we are at home, apart from when the cup competitions kick in. I’m not saying we will be picking up loads of floating United supporters, but we may attract some as well as our own fans bringing their friends.

Meanwhile WSM we're being given a scare at nearby Yate - who have just been promoted to the level below them:

"Weston were forced to come from behind to see off Southern League Yate Town 4-2 in a pre-season friendly last night. Andy Neal missed two good early chances for Yate before Matt Rawlins opened the scoring on 17 minutes after Lewis Hogg saw his shot spilled by goalkeeper Tony Court."

So the 5/6 is a must. I will go in with medium stakes a last season City tended to do better away (10-3-8 at home) - then again WSM we're pants away (3-8-10)

I'll be back with more probably later in the week. I'm going to look into the FGR v Cambridge game in the Conference, Thurrock and Bognor Regis and see if there's any punts to be had.

Re: English Non-League 13th Aug

Forest Green have gone full time this season AMP,

I think they could spring a surprise and beat Cambridge Utd or at least stop them from taking three points.

Cambridge may find it hard to adjust to Conference football and they may be in for a bit of a surprise playing at The Lawn.

When Cambridge turn up to the game they'll be reminded that they were relegated as this is a different football ground to what the football league has to offer, they'll be playing in an open field with 500 inbreds shouting FGR on. Its the strangest place in the Conference bar none and i just dont fancy a Cambridge win until they have adjusted to Conference football.

Dagenham's odds look tempting, evens for the home win against newly promoted Southport is on my shortlist. Dagenham finished well last season and have some good players, Craig Makel Smith had an excellent season and i think we'll see plenty more from him this season.

The game i'm going to get more into is Woking at Kiddie. Woking are another team who improved last season and can do so again this season. Kiddie have had nothing much good going for a while now and they will not get promoted straight back to the football league at the first attempt.

Odds of 3.25 for the away might just get me. A definate contender for the
2/1 or more thread.

I'll take a look at the odds on chances later.

Hi Kop,

I just read that Cambridge are going to re-sign "legend" John Taylor, at 40 years old..FGr could well be on my shortlist.

Re: English Non-League 13th Aug

A non league punter I hold in very high esteem is tipping Newport to beat Carlshaton at home. (Come over to the non PM reading forces of light my friend..) I've looked into this match in depth and I'm going to place it slightly higher in my ranking than the Cambridge City game.

Carlshalton are a shambles. They've lost some key player pre-season due to "wage cuts" and replaced them with largely untried youths. At their last friendly (away to Tooting & Mitcham - two technical levels below them) they lost 1-0. This prompted supporters behind the goal to start a sweepstake on how many goals that they're going to ship in the first 6 league games.

You can read about it here on their forum:

http://www.footballwebpages.co.uk/fo...30&article=488

Where the poster in question labels it as "The worst pre-season in many a year" aslong with a few less polite adjectives....

In contrast Newport's pre-season has been one of confidence. They've got a few new players in and recently won away to Worcester - who play in the same level in the conference North. Their pre-season has included a succesful tour of Devon. A lot of wins against lower opposition allbeit - but you can see the demoralising effect a loss has by just reading the Carshalton forum.

Here's the Newport Info:

http://www.newport-county.co.uk/ (slick on latest news for the match reports).

Finally the best thing about this bet is the odds offered by Stan James. Currently Bet 365 go 4/7 (realistically), Skybet go 4/6 but my old friends Stan James go 4/5. Fantastic.

6.5 points for me, thank you very much - or a tasty double with Cambridge if that's more your fancy...

Re: English Non-League 13th Aug

Do I get the 25 if i'm an existing customer Komp?

i don't know what's going on as last season all the usual suspects we're covering the unibond, Ryman and Southern. So far this week I've only seen prices for the Southern so I'll fire off an email to 365.

Re: English Non-League 13th Aug

Yes I am Komp - it's feeing good (over 100 views by Wednesday but 50 or so are mine )and will be even better when we get some form and stats under our belts . But as this weekends Scot's Premier showed us - it's not always a good idea to punt on stats alone is it?

Seriously though I welcome any posters who'd like a bash at Conference North and the Unibond. I've got a lot of links to post get you off and running - the thing I don't have really is time as I'm going to be heavily involved in the Conference South and FA competitions this season (which kicks off next weekend!).

I bet a lot with Stan James and if you have them, 365 and Skybet you can really take advantage of discrepencies in non-league pricing (See the Newport game this weekend for an example!)
