Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

The dear old 'horse for causes' Headingley pick is resurrected with Ryan Sidebottom in the 2nd test squad freddys still in as well but surely wont be played as an out & out batsman after 4 tons in the 1st test

Flintoff out, so a toss up between Anderson & sidebottom for the final spot. Anderson not been playing well in domestic games this season. Sidebottom likes bowling to lefties which should help his cause.

Draw looks the bet call, as neither of these sides even have one form bowler between them!

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

They might both get a go, Tricky. Based on 'if we go in with 4 pace, maybe 2 will fire and/or not get injured'. But that's nuts for a hundred reasons, not least Prior at 6 and Strauss out.

Kinda points up 'no fit Flintoff, unbalanced England'.

But i wouldn't want to be Vaughan (great bloke, top cricketer) at mid-off trying to get sustained pressure from Harmison, Anderson and Plunkett. Impossible to set a field.

As for bets at Headingley, I haven't a bloody clue.

KP is now sensible enough to toy with this Windies attack and post a 167.
MoM? Gayle's got his strut back. No idea. :wasntme

2nd test, England to win @ 10/11 looks tasty, but the draw depends on the weather factor for me.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Accuweather see it like this:

Rain showers early friday, then cloud with possibility of bad light. Shower around 4-ish.
Ok with sunny spells & cloud on saturday with a bit of rain late in the playing day. Also rain forecast overnight on the saturday/sunday/monday.

Very, very difficult to call as has been said It seems to be assumed that Sidebottom plays come what may & the possibility is that Strauss misses out. That would mean:
Cook, Vaughan....then in whatever order KP, Bell & Collingwood.....Prior, Plunkett, Sidebottom, Harmison, Panesar, Anderson
Hmmm....not sure I like it tbh. I can see the likes of Collymore being better here after a decent bowl at Lords & i dont like Plunkett @ 7 at all Cant see them dropping Monty though after wickets last week (9/1 1st Inns wkts ) but 3 seamers is a worry...unless they derop Harmy & i cant see that tbh :wasntme

Horses for courses then & I can see any of those scenarios tbh Personally I think if theres enough play then the WIs batting could be found out here after doing well against a flat England bowling attack on a flat slow Lords wicket......Hoggard short as well remember. There'll be enough damp around to keep some interest & i can see both attacks doing ok but only England weathering it enough to get a half decent score. People will point to WIs batting well last test but this is WIs & form doesnt apply.
Its difficult to predict but if they can get 350 overs in I'll have to disagree with tricky & say no way would I want to be on the draw

Unless I change my mind overnight I'm sitting tight until in-running, but I expect England to do well here....I just keep coming back to the possibility of Plunkett @ 7 & something says 'leave it alone tosser'

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Odds against on England have sucked me in.

England win @ 11/10 at 40pts
Vaughan run out 1st innings @ 25-1 at 2pts
Pietersen MoM @ 8-1 at 10pts

Bell match perf -83 @ 4/5 at 25pts

Apologies for lack of comments, reasoning. Hopefully back at lunchtime with something sensible to say.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Rain later in the afternoon?

2nd session highest scoring @ 7/4 at 12 points. Blue sq

Nice price in a 3-horse race if accu weather* is anything to go by.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

accu has since said no rain at 5.00pm. But the 'arthritis index' is now yellow. Sell Vaughan's runs?

Seriously, the big coups on this series could be getting the weather right.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Attractive ton from Vaughan against a pop-gun attack. Punters convinced Sunday/Monday weather will win, leaving England at a very juicy 13/8. Got burnt chasing this at Lord's.

Wonder if Vaughan will call up some spot-on local forecasting and be tempted to declare overnight? It would send out a message of intent that even Ho-hum Harmy might feed-off.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Will have to see how Pieterson goes about this, England should be having a crack at WI before lunch whatever I would think. Hoping after they score about another 100 or so first. No point messing about with England tail enders batting though.
Pieterson & Prior should be good watching them bat together.

Sarwan not batting first innings plus ? over 2nd innings the reason for Englands odds shortening this morning before play started. I guessed that and put money on England last night with the intention of laying off during todays play.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Prospects look grim to neglible today. 50F degs at noon forecast. Late May. Oh, must be global warning. England should only need 3 hours in 3 days so no great worries. Hopefully Sidebum will share around the 2nd innings wickets otherwise my meaty punt on KP MoM is in danger.

It will be a devil of a job finding value in the next two tests.

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

Didnt see all of yesterdays play due to playing myself, but the forecast today is appalling
In a way I feel sorry for WIs having been deprived of first Chanderpaul & then Sarwan, the 2 most experienced batsmen in the side.......& really without them they have no chance & that has been proved emphatically yesterday.
You have to say fair play to the selectors regarding Sidebottom. I could see a situation where he bowled poorly & the choice was made to look ridiculous, ala Mike Smith in the 90's under Atherton. It'll be interesting to see where they go with him from here tbh, as hes a pick for this venue alone but hes done well enough to expect to retain his place.
I've no bets on this test as its been a waste of time in-running as its been so one-sided, but in retrospect the 11/10 Pie took was far too good to turn down.
I'll be surprised if we see more than 4/9 in the next test

Re: England v West Indies : Cricket

15 minutes play so far & Plunkett finally got one in the right place & dismissed Gayle Looks like an on/off day & with only 6 wickets left to fall with Sarwan too injured to bat unless theres a realistic chance of saving the test, it looks very doom & gloom for the WIs. Forecast isnt great though so they'll be looking at that as a way out which tbh would be the biggest travesty in years
The Bangladeshis will be happy though they conceded 600+ against India & were reduced to 11-4 & at that point you'd have got very long odds on them not being suffering the heaviest defeat this week, yet WIs need another 154 to avoid that ignominy :wasntme
