Re: India in England

3rd & final test starts tomorrow at the Oval.

KP was a doubt but looks like hes ok now after some kind of virus. Broad is expected to be released & was allowed to play a Pro40 game last night & if thats not a hint I dont know what is India have picked their side but not named it but I dont expect much change as its a time for experience, although I suppose Sreesanth might be worried

Difficult to judge really. I've looked into it but as I'm a bit slower off the mark than usual I'll just do a summary of what I've discovered & feel are relevant points:

Vaughan - as captain hes lost 5 tests & then played in the next one.....hes won all 5

India have thrown away the lead in series's 5 times this decade

Only 3 draws at the Oval in the last 16 tests (since 1990). Against that however, the last 4 between India & England have all been draws. What needs to be realised though, is that of those 4 draws, in 1979, 1982 & 1990, India were chasing the series yet couldnt get a result. In 2002 the series was level entering the final test.

The Oval has a 61% result rate

The last 6 draws have been:
2005 v Aus 313 overs
2002 v India 333 overs
1995 v WIs 420 overs
1990 v India 450 overs
1989 v Australia 333 overs
......hmmm, only 2 over 400 overs

England havent lost a home series since 2001 vs Australia, theyve also not lost an Oval test since that series. Theyve won 3, drawn 2 of the last6.

With The Oval being being traditionally the last stand in a series, results can be broken into 'dead' tests & 'live' ones. ie a 'dead' test being when the series result is already decided. 3 of the last 5 tests have been 'live':
2005 v Australia. 2-1 up going in, England achieved their draw
2003 v SA. 2-1 down going in, England won to square the series
2002 v India. 1-1 going in, match drawn

I could go back further with this but everyone knows England were in a slump in the 1990s so theres little point, but what I'm getting at is that England tend to produce the goods in the last few years when required, & my gut feeling is that they are a tough team these days & therefore will again, although I have reservations

More later

Weather looks decent although theres rain forecast saturday & sunday night

Re: India in England

I'm going to have to sleep on this I think as nothing really attracts me betting wise regarding this at the moment.
My hunch is that India will go out to hold their lead & may fall into trouble through negativity, but against that theres not really any old heads in the England bowling for when the going gets tough. Tremletts bounce is the obvious one that sticks out, but I'm not sure the wicket will have much trouble lasting with the moisture still deep in the ground.

England trading @ 2.7, draw 2.58 & India 4.0

In my heart of hearts I think England will do it, its just the fact theirs little bowling experience & Bells playing with the axe hovering, although I dont see him not making the tours, just the starting X1 possibly. Not a good record at The Oval though

Re: India in England

Dravid's had only one test knock here and scored 217 before being run out. Seems in decent nick and worth a go.

Dravid India high bat @ 7/2 at 10pts.

Prefer to see toss and first few overs for the much vaunted bounce before punting further.

India bat. quoted at 375-390 which seems a touch low. Will hold fire as have a feeling Karthik might go early.

SELL Karthik runs @ 38 at 0.50pts

Re: India in England

im on India @ 3.8 BF

reasoning :- if India rack up say 400+ which is more than possible with their batting lineup at the run paradise aka the Oval then England will have to really come out all guns blazing and alot of them might just get themselves out playing shots.. trying to force the issue. Its Kumble's swan song and the Leggie might be the man to turn the screw with England having to bat last on a pitch that offers something for spinners as it gets older, the more sun the more cracks and dusty it becomes etc..

gl with your bets.

Dravid looks a good punt but Karthik is playing beautifully at the moment.

Re: India in England

Karthik looking good for my India series runs bet Hes just ahead of Vaughan on the overall as well

316-4 & the drop off Tendulkar looks costly Looking back though, in 2003 SA were 290-1 & lost by a load !! New balls only 7.3 overs old so the first hours the key, & England certainly cant afford to let India get over 450.
Obviously its much harder to boss the game batting 2nd on a good deck as not only do you have to bowl well but score runs at a decent rate as well. The key in my mind is that England need to be batting at least half of tomorrow & aim to be level or just ahead by the close on day 3, or worst case scenario lunch on day 4....they they have to bowl India out again & chase it down. Simple
I still think India could be overly negative here although batting first allows them to play the test normally for now at least. I still have a sneaking suspicion for England but tomorrow morning is massive & they must split these 2 early.
With all that in mind I think the draw is too short & I'll lay it with a smaller side bet on Vaughans boys

Lay draw @ 1.94 Betfair 37.6pnts to win 40pnts
England win @ 7.8 Betfair 6pnts

Re: India in England

Nice call there Swoops, i like it and i'm with you on the draw lay for 25 pts. I'm gutted to, i was just about to back the boys when the price was at $15.50 on betfair , but then they got a wicket and it dropped to under $10. ah well, thems the breaks! So im risking it and staying with laying the draw for now.

How costly was that karthik bet for pie ??..ouch mate!
Cheers
Mike

Re: India in England

Yeah, bit of a bath on Karthik, but only -26.5. Actually bought India runs at 400 after 4 overs so hope to recoup there.

Spreads quote England runs at 410-430, which will presumably only drift higher if India carry on towards 500. It's a tempting buy on this belter but we'll need a 160 odd from someone.

This is the game being quoted for recent Oval precedence. Look good for the draw layers!

5th npower Test: England v South Africa at The Oval, 4-8 Sep 2003

gutting if you had karthick for top 1st innings scorer(91) Dhoni's just beaten him by 1 and is out for 92.

Some of us work for a living I'm afraid mate Not sure what you want me to say anyway, just sit tight as I'm afraid I dont see a draw here so our lays should come in

Not a lot went Englands way today did it really 664 & 24-1.....jeez !!
Its difficult having fielded in the sun for so long but Strauss hasnt covered himself in glory with that shot & it had shades of last winters Ashes tbh
It'll be interesting to see how England react in this situation because its something these players havent experienced at home before with the good results these last few years. If it were an overseas test I'd be pretty fearful of following on here but theres not really much form to go on at home
The draw is favourite on Betfair @ 1.9 but for England to get the 465 required to avoid the follow on then we're talking batting until lunch on day 4 at least. If they succeed in saving the follow on then you'd expect the test to be dead, but in all situations you at least have to have a plan to stand any chance at all & I guess Englands will be to bat quickly enough to be around 500 at lunch on sunday & declare in arrears & have a crack.........very, very thin especially as it appears theyre a bowler down. I wouldnt be suprised though, for England to declare in arrears if they get the runs on the board, giving more chance of a result.
In my heart of hearts though, I'm not sure I can see England getting this 465 & you'd imagine in that case the follow on would be enforced (no certainty these days) as India will want 2 nil to erase the chances of being told they only won due to the Lords weather.
Interesting to watch this though, & I'm quite happy with my draw lay although I'm not increasing it.
I feel sorry for the likes of Bell though. He needs a score yet he has only Prior & a long tail to help him, in fact hes number 7 now with a nightwatchman in.....its not helping him.
Its a shame though, that effectively the series is decided by the toss in the final test after the likely winners got away with murder in the 1st test
