The poor relation of the PDC World Championships, certainly now Barney has left, gets underway on Saturday. Don't know a great deal about this myself, as we hardly ever see any of these on TV, so it may be a case of watching the first couple of rounds and getting involved from the QF onwards.

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

I saw Martin Phillips playing in the local super league at my local about 4 weeks ago and he mentioned that he was playing in this , he's from Dolgellau and he's taking a few fans with him , so I'll be taking a bit of interest in this , well until Tuesday 9th

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

Hmmm...I know a bit about a few of the players so might try some small stakes early on unless anything jumps out, otherwise there should be an opportunity or two later on.

Outright looks wide open, and as such I think Van Gerwen is probably a little short. There's so many players there that can beat him that it would be a horrendously bumpy ride to take on at that price. His problem might be in the earlier rounds - he can easily prove his class in longer matches(104 average v Adams in the best of 13 sets) but in the early rounds and the shorter format he might just get picked off, especially as he will have to play Walton and perhaps Whitlock early on. Klaasen looks priced up on the basis of last years rather than this seasons patchy form.

Mervyn King is a decent player but the crowds don't like him as he's a moody bastard and as soon as he comes up against anyone semi popular and half decent he'll be right up against it.

The other 3 shortish prices in the outright look like the fancies for me...Adams looks too big at 10s, and Whitlock was playing brilliantly last year and will be tricky to stop if he gets in the groove.

However the pick has to be Gary Anderson at 15.5 on Betfair at the moment. Hopefully no match fixing this year, and he won't need to either as he's been close to the best player on the circuit this year. Always performs against the cannon fodder so should avoid any banana skins this time, and has beaten all the big players on his way to the BDO Gold Cup, the Swiss Open, and the British Classic this season. Too long IMO and i'll be on it from the off.

Will have a look at the ties later on.

Well i've took a bit of the 50/1 on a.fordham to win it with tote and also andy fordham to beat whitlock at 9/4 think fordham will do well in this tourny.

Why? By all accounts he's been in appalling form, and will be lucky to make the 2nd round. Do you know something no-one else does?

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

just think that after his stint as a tv superstar his fifteen mintes of fame he will want to be back to prove hes still got it and by taking the scalp of whitlock oneof the ones many predict to win it he will g on to bigger things like a pie eating contest but i think he will come through the first round hopefuly anyway if not my slection is M.Webster at 25/1

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

Not sure about Fordham k33nan - maybe if Andy had a gentle start he could build a bit of momentum and get the crowd right behind him like the good old days, but Whitlock won't give him an inch and Andy will have to hit the ground running to win this one, and I don't see that happening. You never know tho.

I do like Webster tho and will prob be on him in a few matches.

Anyway onto tomorrow's games:

Stompe v Klaasen - Klaasen is there for the taking I think, if only it wasn't Stompe playing him. He's always struggled against the big names at the Lakeside and never looks to have the mentality to pull off a shock. Odds look ok.

Adams price looks ok - but I've got him on the outrights so will leave him here. O Shea isn't as good as in previous years but always performs at the lakeside.

Don't know about Davy Richardson so I'll leave that alone.

Standout bet for tomorrow I think should be Mario Robbe - he's a dangerous Dutch player who has beaten some decent players this season, including a 3-0 victory over Klaasen. Hankey has been struggling for a while now - a gradual decline since winning the title. He lost in the first round last time and this one won't be a cakewalk either. Should be tested by Robbe and the Pinnacle price is a standout.

Mario Robbe to beat Ted Hankey @ 2.86 with Pinnacle

Will leave Veitch as he has been a bit on off this season by all accounts.

And don't know about Gibbs so will leave the Merv King match alone.

So just the one bet for me tomorrow...I'm in pretty heavy on Anderson on the outrights and you might still be able to catch him at 15s if your lucky. Cracking price IMO.

Good luck Beanie, going to leave it alone myself today.

Strong rumours that several of the best BDO players will be moving to the PDC after this event. Difficult to see where the BDO will go from this if it happens - they lost 2005 champ Barney and could potentially lose the 2006 and 2007 winners, plus more.

Yeah heard this too. Talk of the two young Dutch lads Klaasens and Van Gerwen or whatever he is called and also King going across to PDC.

Something to do with them having the same management and they want them to move over. Be great for PDC and could signal the end of the BDO.

Is it true that if you win the BDO you HAVE to defend it the following year meaning a jump over to PDC is impossible?

Read along those lines on Betfair forums and would certainly explain a lot on how Klaasen won the tournament last yerr with such a poor average.

I don't see that they can force anyone to play can they? I can't see many of the players signing anything that ties them into that. I thought Barney's plan was to win 5 BDO titles before moving over anyway, so move was always on the cards whatever happened.

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

I don't think that BDO rule exists but it makes for nice conspiracy theories for people like me.

Hmmm. Some of Coral's specials are interesting but they're a bit skinny if just about right (the odds for a 9-dart finish are crap though):

The draw (numbers in brackets are seedings):

FIRST QUARTER -

Co Stompe NED (16) vs Jelle Klaasen NED
Martin Adams ENG (1) vs Tony O'Shea ENG
Vincent Van Der Voort NED (9) vs Davy Richardson ENG
Ted Hankey ENG (8) vs Mario Robbe NED

SECOND QUARTER -

Mike Veitch SCO (12) vs Goran Klemme SWE
Mervyn King ENG (5) vs Paul Gibbs ENG
Shaun Greatbatch ENG (13) vs Paul Hogan ENG
Tony Eccles ENG (4) vs Mark Webster WAL

THIRD QUARTER -

Paul Hanvidge SCOT (15) vs Martin Phillips WAL
Gary Anderson SCO (2) vs Albertino Essers NED
Martin Atkins ENG vs Gary Fenn ENG
Darryl Fitton ENG (7) vs Phil Nixon ENG

FOURTH QUARTER -

Niels De Ruiter NED (11) vs Brian Woods ENG
Simon Whitlock AUS (4) vs Andy Fordham ENG
John Walton (14) vs Brian Sorensen DEN
Michael Van Gerwen NED (3) vs Gary Robson ENG

Who'll be the semi-finalists? I'd suggest rather gutlessly that the top four seeds of Martin Adams, Tony Eccles, Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen will.

I'm hoping to see Klassen, King, Fitton and Van Gerwen. No idea what will actually happen though.

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

Hopefully all the players will desert the BDO after this and it either dies off slowly or just calls it a day when they see Van Gerwen and Klaasen and the like leave.

The world championships of a sport should be exactly that and so one organisation needs to go, and as the far far weaker(and from what I read the more inward looking and sly too) that should be the BDO.

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

I don't often defend the BDO (as IMO it's far inferior) but to be fair they were the only orginisation before the PDC broke away. Having said that, I'd be happy if the PDC ran the whole game.

Re: BDO World Darts Championships

Hankey pissed all over Robbe - never pushed but seems to be playing well. Remembering the 2000 champs he got better and better as the week went on, and didn't seem to be able to miss in the final. Doing that again looks unlikely but he's made the start he needed(and I didn't.)
