How to pick a Grand National Winner

I'm looking for a wee bit of help here...

Firstly, I know next to nothing about horse racing but...

I'm trying to determine a way of 'picking' a Grand National winner and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what trends, quirks and form to look out for.

For example, I read that 4 of the last 5 winners have been Irish, therefore should i be looking at the Irish providing the winner again?

Also is there a trend in the age or weights of winners?

What about recent form, either at the National previously or in recent races.

Favourites. How often have they won?

Etc. etc.

It is just a bit of fun but it could chuck out the winner at the other end of the system?

Any suggestions folks?

I too am newish to horse racing, but I would say you want to be looking for the one that jumps 'em like a stag and wont even notice the jockeys on his back.

I probably wont risk more than free bet on the race tbh!

Re: How to pick a Grand National Winner

I have found something that is really useful for entering stats into. You just put in number of wins, maximum weight etc (whatever figures fit your stats) and it comes up with what horses fit that particular profile. Saves a lot of time as you would be dragging yourself through each horses form otherwise.

Mayeb we should go through all the stats and enter them in, see what shortlist it gives us.

Then we can pick even more holes in those horses (going etc)

I've just realised you can also pick horses by their colour on that site so I guess if all else fails then we can do that and hope for the best!!

Lucky dip here I come!!

Oh, and the Irish have a great recent record but their challenge doesn't look quite as strong and many of thier contenders would prefer the soft ground you don't normally get. If it came up soft I would be betting an Irish 1-2-3

Re: How to pick a Grand National Winner

My tip would be not to try to pick a Grand National winner.

Instead, spread your bet and back several each way at the 16/1 to 20/1 mark, FIND A BOOKIE WHO'S PAYING AT LEAST FIVE PLACES and for good measure, hope that they may also be doing a grand national matched bet or something.

Bet365 are already offering 5 places plus if your selection is a non runner you get your dosh back.

Very early thoughts...

L'ami 20/1

Knowhere 25/1

Phillson Run 20/1

Possibly Joe's Edge (although I'm pretty sure horses that have run at the Cheltenham Festival have a poor record this soon afterwards at this race.)

That'll be the thread where I made an error in making the short-list - the ONLY one I missed which should have been included was the winner.

How I 'laughed out loud' after that

Re: How to pick a Grand National Winner

well make sure u don't miss it this year ya cnut as I aint had a winner in the National for a few years now, I had two 25/1 shots two yrs on the bounce when Direct racing was up and running but since then I've had fcuk all by using various systems dotted around the place.

Best to let some other fcuker do the donkey work imo.

That's the bloody link I deleted from Joker's post, Seen. He was doing all the text book spammer stuff (random one line posts in random threads then LINK). It's a conspiracy.
