We have to go to the location of the greatest race in living history. Its a place I hold dear in my heart, it is where I got to see Ouija Board!! Yes we are off to Goodwood.
Goodwood is one track that course form is vital, its so undulating that the jockeys must come back feeling like they have been on a rollercoaster.
So the race to focus on is the 3.55
A fillies handicap in which a few can be ruled out quickly. Lady Friend is the oldest in the race and the horse with the least form, she really looks to be out of her grade in this race. Kahara is doubtful and as such will not run.
That leaves 8. We are dealing with fillies so form is everything, a filly in form is a filly to follow!!
Ones in good form are - Montbretia, Shimoni, Starfala, Storyland and Interchange.
Take Interchange out as this is her handicap debut, I do not back horses on their handicap debut, especially when they are 3 years old or above. The handicapper often gets them over handicapped in my opinion.
Next we look at course form
Wins - Shimoni
So Shimoni is the obvious place to start the detailed form reading. The filly won a Goodwood course and distance handicap last time out (and carries a 6lb penalty for 5 lengths - she therefore would seem to be well in!) and is due to go up another 4lbs after this race. That day she beat a decent field but there was a hint of hanging in her run and she had to be ridden to pass the field. This race is much tougher... She is a definate chance but I think one or two of these will prove too good.
Starfala is held by Storyland and has no wins on the surface.
That leaves 2 Storyland and Montbretia
Storyland beat Montbretia in the same race that Starfala ran in. They finished 1st and 2nd that day, the former coming out on top by over 2 lengths. They both pulled away from the field. However Storyland was the more experienced of the two that day having already had four handicap runs. This is the crucial aspect to my selection....
Montbretia was on handicap debut!! And you all know my thoughts about handicap debutants, they seldom win! The filly should come on leaps and bounds for that run and that alone gives hope and expectation that she can turn the tables with Storyland. Then add to that a pull in the weights of 6lbs and the selection has to be Montbretia.
Racingpost has the filly as a 7/2 shot and is the first selection of the blog!! GL anyone who plays in the race!!!
These are now going on my blog @
The state of play there will be links to this amongst other sites on the blog.
I will try to keep posting them on here, but if I miss a day then do shout at me!!
