Re: Hands you dont play.

I always raise hugely with AA. I never slow play them. A lot of the time I only win the blinds but I don't care if everyone folds as being busted with AA to a crappy drawing hand is one of the things that means I have to walk away from the table for an hour or so or go on tilt.

Pistol - if you're all in pre- flop and have lost 3 times on the trot today then all I can say is

Re: Hands you dont play.

For the record Brunson doesn't always raise with suited connectors. He only does it sometimes.

Re: Hands you dont play.

Less of this hands that you play crap. Let's all talk some more about my dreadful luck with pocket Aces.

Had them 6 times today and I'm about $90 down having lost with them 4 times.

Now that's what I call thread hijacking

Re: Hands you dont play.

Ive spoken before about suited connectors and Doyle Bruson. Ignore it its just not relevant to the games youre playing. Play like Gus Hansen at low stakes on the internet and youll quickly end up broke.

Suited connectors and suited Aces are good for calling with in late position to try and flop a big hand/draw and keep the commitment down to 1bb, thats the only place id call them, maybe mid position if I felt cheeky.

I would never call a raise with a suited ace unless it was AQs or AKs (maybe a min raise I would actually but only if id already called). I could call a raise with 76s something like that but never a big raise, 3bb max there for me im calling.

I reckon Muze talks a lot of sense!

He tells it how it is at these levels, just use a bit of common sense!

Again, forgive me if I'm talking bollox as I'm desperately trying to pick stuff up as I go along but the above doesn't sound right to me.

If you're holding 10, J and the first four cards down are 9 J Q K, then you have a straight but anyone holding 10, A, has a better straight.

Re: Hands you dont play.

You're right ODM.

The old saying is that J,10 always makes the nut straight - but that is assuming both hole cards are needed to make the best 5 card hand from the 7 available. I think Doc has taken this to read that if your lowest card is a 10 then you always make the nut straight which is obviously incorrect.

If you hold KJ for example. You could make a straight with this hand and it wouldn't be the nut straight. The board could be Q J 10 9 8. In this instance the nut straight would be made by someone holding AK (both of which were higher than a 9 last time I looked).

To add to Docs defence I think he actually meant (on reflection) if both of your cards are higher than a 9 and you need BOTH cards to be active in order to make the straight then it has to be the nut straight. That would be correct of course.

So he obviously wasn't getting confused with the old J10 saying. Doc just doesn't do 'wrong' when it comes to things like this. (The smug bastard )

Correct G - note I said 'they', implying you use both cards. ODM is of course correct that if you only use 1 card then you can be beaten.

Re: Hands you dont play.

I think the biggest hand to eliminate from any play when you are learning to play hold em is the rag ace. DONT play rag aces people, nor call a raise with AJ etc, even AQ to a raise is dodgy unless its from a fud. Of course you CAN do this if you feel like it but you have to be very adept at laying down a hand if you think you are beaten.

Re: Hands you dont play.

How do you you change your starting hand requirements when you're the small blind?

Lets say it's checked round to you, will you play most hands from there even though you've got bad position? How do you trade off the bad position with getting in cheaper and having a well disguised hand? Do you play certain hands differently form here?

Re: Hands you dont play.

I certainly do Pistol. I loosen up considerably on the SB. In fact if it is called all the way round to me I always call with any old shite. If the BB raises I fold. I have won some huge pots with well disguised hands doing this. I have also been involved in a couple of hands that I lost that I would never have played too. All in all calling on the SB can be a good ploy if you're disciplined enough to let go of something that you think is beaten.

Not sure if the experts on here would say this kind of play is +EV or not?

PS - Welcome back Jezza.
