The only reasons I've put this up now is because I've had a free bet (courtesy of CanBet) and I could only use it on some selective markets. I ended up settling on this one, with the my money going on Australia with a view to laying them later in the tournament. I'll end up forgetting about it if I don't write it down somewhere.

£30 on Australia @ 15.00 (stake not returned) CanBet

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

hate to say it RC, but I think thats a bad bet.

Oz are quite poor at the moment, and having to play Wales in Cardiff there is a real chance they'll go through as group runner-up - in all probability to take on South Africa. Even if they win, they'll be facing England and I don't see them shortening much. Best odds for me there are on Italy. They play Scotland in the south of France and have a real chance of a win. They're at worst 2-1 to win that (more like evens in my book). Beat Scotland (and assuming they beat Romania and Portugal) and they're through. 3-1 at the absolute outside. And no team into the QF is going to be 250-1, so probably some value there.
Wales are also a bit tasty at that price (if you're looking for a team to shorten).
If you want a bet on a team to win, then SA are probably value at 11

Thanks for your thoughts Doc.

As I said, it was just a free bet and it needed to be used up yesterday so I thought Australia would be a decent punt. I should obviously have looked at how they'd been playing, but it's done now and I'll hopefully have a chance to lay it off sometime (or I could just let it ride).

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

I agree with doc about australia , but it could be my red tinted glasses having australia in our group.

the all blacks were very impressive last year but at odds of 1.44 makes laying them rather tempting as those odds are effectively for them to win three matches on the trot quarters , semi and final.

Well, there are outside bets. South Africa, Ireland, France... Australia are never discountable.
But the Rugby World Cup is New Zealand's for the losing in France this year, the team which has won 19 out of 20 Tests over the past two years, the team with 45-odd interchangeable players.
this from planet rugby , full article

I'm tempted with France@15 being offered by betfair which could be layed later , most bookies offer France under 10

I'm for SA i think. If things continue the same way the recent friendlies have gone then the boks have the best chance. And anyways, NZ always fall at the last hurdle....

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

I think the best chance of a tourney winner outside the all blacks are the boks. In any gamed there pack are capable of squeezing a game out and as mentioned earlier there are 3 or 4 teams capable of beating the kiwis in a one off game just remenber france in the semi of 1999 they stood up to a well fancied New Zealand side. Im considering laying the all blacks at that price.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the Irish may have a chance, on there day they can beat anyone bar the all blacks really and 28/1 each way isnt a bad bet in my opinion. what do you think?

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

I agree that on their day Ireland can beat most teams but the biggest problem thay have is that they are in a difficult group

POOL D
France
Ireland
Argentina
Georgia
Namibia

If they win that group they will avoid New Zealand and have a decent chance of getting to the final.
Coming second will be difficult and then they probably meet the All Blacks.
So to get the "easy" quarter final of Scotland or Italy they have to beat the host France and Argentina.
Ireland are @27 with betfair for the winner , they are about 17 with most other british bookies who offer 1/3 1st and 2nd.
Where did you get those odds mate ?
From what I have seen it looks like a Southern Hemisphere winner with France being the main danger as they are at home.
I think that New Zealand will win but their price is much too low , Australia were no mugs against S.A. on Saturday and at 19 with Paddy Power looks a bit of value to me.
If they beat Wales they will play the runner up in England /South Africa Group who will probably meet New Zealand.

It could be better for you to put singles on Ireland matches and place your winning on the next match.

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

good thinking may have a look at betting on each game as it happens and stocking up winnings! I got the odds from a local bookmaker near manchester 28/1 ew 1/2 place. not big stakes but just a bit of interest, however i reckon they should do ok, o'driscoll, o'gara and d'arcy are good players!

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

I agree the first choice irish team are capable of beating anyone what would worry me is injuries over the course. If either the first choice centres got injured would you fancy it. I also wouldnt fancy a big game with Issac Boss at scrum half. that said if the meet the blacks with a full strength team what a game it could be

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

Posted a few days before England play Frogs in Marseilles...

First off, I couldn't be on Ireland. They just have to win their group. A game second in Pool D having beaten a tough Argies side puts them up against NZ in the quarters.

My ante-post bet is England. But you'd need to get on now. IF they beat the French on Saturday, the odds will shorten hugely. The bookies are calling that one France -13 (I presume; handicap not up yet but 1/3 odds in places)
but think it will be very close. England could win.

It's the draw that makes England RWC odds look big. Yeah, SA in Paris but the Boks are never as good off African soil and England's best XV will give them more than a fright. Then it's Wales in the Qs and France in the semis.

England to win RWC @ 31-1 Betfair
England to make finals @ 10-1 SportingOdds

Very good value and won't last if there's an upset in Marseilles. If France win in single figures odds likely to remain static anyway.

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

I've watched England's last two "friendlies"
Against Wales they played a total forwards game , the backs were only let lose in the last 5 minutes and hammered Wales . If they had given the ball to the backs earlier they could easily have scored 80 points , but they would have conceeded a few more points. Wilkinson kicked poorly from live play and untypically missed some easy kicks early on.
In the second match against France they could have won with an attack when the wrong decision was made in the backs before Chabal burst through to score the winning try at the end.
The commentary on sky by Barnes was painful to listen to if you were not English. Any offence by the opposition was criticied , but when England broke the rules it was "clever rugby"

I agree with what you have posted Pie but I would find it difficult to put my money on England in a tournament [ I find it painful willing them to win one match when i've got money on them , 80 minutes i'll tolerate , a month i couldn't ]

Perhaps a bet now and a lay before that quarters clash.
England away win , Wales home defeat to Argentina this weekend could see that England price drop.
I have yet to place a bet but I still fancy the home nation France who are now @11/1

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

Traeth,

Bugger the detail, at the moment.

Do you think England will give France a game on Saturday? They probably will. If they lose by 10 points or less, the bookies will hardly change. If England win there will be major re-appraisal.

Headline:

England throw down the gauntlet
Chariot finds a new dimension
Shaw thing for England

Whatever. The time to get on is now.

I'd much rather England @ 31/1 than France in their Group to win @ 11/1.

Re: Rugby Union World Cup - France 2007

I agree with you pie that now is the time to get on England,

The only way that price goes up is if England lose by 20+ to the French this weekend.Like you've posted I can see it being France by 10.

NO don't tempt me to bet on England pie
