Re: Six Nations 2008

Disagree with David Gee! (bettingzone above)

Ireland v Wales

The home team have to hope for a structured game; clean, consistent line-out ball and O'Gara being bang-on with options and kicking accuracy. They just don't have the spark so will have to win with territory stats.

It's Wales for me. It could be down to having Peel, Hook and Parker on the bench and a canny coach who knows when to change things. And if O'Gara 'gets a knock' then Ireland are stuffed.

Wales by 5
Punt: Ireland/Wales ht/ft @ 7-1

Safer option: Wales +4 @ 10/11

Scotland v England

Scotland are rubbish. 2 tries in last 7 games (or thereabouts). English defence immense.
Give Scotland 9 charity points. England will be talking about going to Murrayfield to win, but there will be a target to rack up 4 tries here to make the points difference going into the final weekend more achievable. Expect Big Les to get far more into the game (shades of that at last v France) and for England to have a dominant second half. Weather/playing conditions look grim and that's the only worry.

England by 18
Punt: pile into the points spread @ 11 with IG
Safer option: England -9 @ 10/11

Re: Six Nations 2008

Can't say I agree with all that Pie-chucker.but then thats why theres forums

Ok, England (-9 EVS)should have no problem putting away Scotland but I'm going with the Irish to beat the Welsh and my "safe" option is Ireland +5.

Reasons: The irish will probably play like munster, grind down the opposition and they will be helped by the weather.
Heavy rain and wind in the morning with strong winds, showers and sunny spells in the afternoon. i could be wrong but i don't think theres a roof on stadium in Dublin( if there is scratch that last bit)

france v italy; Having seen the french XV I am tempted to go with Italy + h/cap (+20 EVS * +21 10/11 * +30 1/3)

Any thoughts?

Fair enough, mate.

No roof. Weather worries me tomorrow both games.

Just followed Highlanders v Hurricanes (Super! 14) and score half-time 6-10.

Score full-time? 6-10. Strange game, rugby whatever the silly Law tweaks.

Wet and windy everywhere, even in paris on sunday!

Like you, I don't see where Scotland are going to get points from but if its one big mudbath they may keep england reigned in.

Re: Six Nations 2008

I'll be on Wales straight win tomorrow boys , my reasoning:
Ireland
Ireland 16 - 11 Italy ...Ireland poor second half , O'Gara struggled to find the touch at Croke Park , ground layout did not suit him.
France 26 - 21 Ireland ...Ireland came into their own in the second half after France had made some substitions to key players
Ireland 34 - 13 Scotland ...Scotland were poor , have been poor all six nations and getting poorer every game , O'Gara's kicking from hand was better which is a slight worry.

Wales
England 19 - 26 Wales ... Great second half performance plus the penalties kicked by Hook led to a long awaited win at Twickers
Wales 30 - 15 Scotland... a poor Scotland who never looked like scoring a try , Wales gave away too many penalties
Wales 47 - 8 Italy ...Wales gifted Italy a try but the penalty count was down , Wales scored some great tries but Italy's defence was poor in the second half after having to work so hard in the first half.

I've persuaded myself that Wales are the better side so I'm on Wales @2.60 with betfair 2 pts

Totally agree with you pie about England , but I will stick to the England -9 @2 with bet365 3 pts

Re: Six Nations 2008

I take the opposite view traeth - you'll find my full thoughts you know where

To take your template:

Quote:
Ireland 16 - 11 Italy ...Ireland poor second half , O'Gara struggled to find the touch at Croke Park , ground layout did not suit him.
O'Gara wasn't kicking for touch in the main - he was deliberately targeting two Italian wingers who were (a) short and (b) don't like to kick. Ireland certainly not great, but credit the Italian performance
Quote:
France 26 - 21 Ireland ...Ireland came into their own in the second half after France had made some substitions to key players
Simply not true despite the lazy reporting. Ireland created plenty of problems for France early on, but the French were ruthless and scored 4 long range tries each somewhat against the run of play. Ireland were well on top for virtually all the second half - long before the substitutions.
Quote:
Ireland 34 - 13 Scotland ...Scotland were poor , have been poor all six nations and getting poorer every game , O'Gara's kicking from hand was better which is a slight worry.
Not true IMO. Easily Scotlands best performance of the season. Ireland ruthless in attack. Lineout disaster and Scottish tactics meant not a lot of the ball, but defence was generally sound and attack very clinical. O'Gara on fire.
Quote:
England 19 - 26 Wales ... Great second half performance plus the penalties kicked by Hook led to a long awaited win at Twickers
One side of the coin. The other is that England were inept and collapsed. Without both happening Wales would have lost by a lot IMO
Quote:
Wales 30 - 15 Scotland... a poor Scotland who never looked like scoring a try , Wales gave away too many penalties
Agree, but Scotland very much in the game till the try (which wasn't and shouldn't have been given) for Williams. Strong finish is credit to Wales and consistent with their other games.
Quote:
Wales 47 - 8 Italy ...Wales gifted Italy a try but the penalty count was down , Wales scored some great tries but Italy's defence was poor in the second half after having to work so hard in the first half.
Wales created very little till the second half. Italians dropped the ball with the line at their mercy and were well in the game till they gave the intercept. Good clinical work by Wales in the second half, but the tired Italians a big factor.

Biggest plus for Wales is their confidence and belief. But this is their biggest test by far. Can't agree that they are they better side. A quick look at the recent record suggest otherwise. By my reckoning the sides have met 13 times in the pro era (since 95), with Wales winning 3. Since O'Sullivan took over in 2001 Wales have won once - in 2005, and been spanked in every other game apart from last year where the margin was 'only' 12 points - in Cardiff.

Disagree about England too - they've been pants IMO and France just have a mental block AND decided to play suicide rugby. England are doughty, brave and physical, but so are Scotland when they play England. And they're at home. You have two sides who are crap at scoring, but Scotland are better at keeping the ball and have a better kicker. Ballsup at fullback is grist to the Scots mill. They're at home. England are a more classy outfit still, but if they win I think they'll sneak it and I wouldn't be going near a nine-point handicap

Hi Snodser

I've seen your stuff on T14 and kudos!

I run a forum elsewhere, but out of respect I won't mention it here. My user name there is Doc. I'm sure you can use google to find the rest should you desire.

Re: Six Nations 2008

I'm with DOD on the Scots England game , nothing England have done to date has impressed me , same too with Scotland truth be known but Like the English do against the French the Scots also do against the English in upping their game for a one off finally.

England in the recent past have folded under pressure when it matters for some reason on foreign turf against the home nations and the Calcutta cup has become the biggest game of their season for the last few yrs now.

The outcome of this game will probbaly come down to kicking and at the moment i think Paterson has the edge on Wiilkinson, especially on distance kicking.

Scotland IMO could win this on the level or it may come down to a narrow England win but Scotland @ +9 @ evens would be my bet in this one.

If Wales want to beat Ireland then they will have to get out of the blocks a lot sooner as they have been doing lately as Ireland arent the type of team to lapse or crumble in the second half especially at Croke park, O'gara will have to be at his best and if he is then Ireland should take this as he has a nack of rallying his troops when it matters.

The comfortable win over Scotland will have done there moral no harm whatsoever and they have gradually got better as the tournament has progressed, this should be a tight and close game but i think home advantage will be hugely significant for the Irish and with the handicap being only 3 I'll go with the Irish at Evens @ -3.

it is absolutely chucking it down up here. i'm about 25 miles from Edinburgh but if it's anything like this then it could be the mudbath that the Scots will want.

Do they water the pitch before hand ???

Re: Six Nations 2008

looking forward to today's matches , its great to have a difference of opinion , my opinions are based on my viewing of all the games on t.v. , down the local , which may be clouded by my alcohol consumption but I stand by my views.

Ireland are an old team getting older and when Wales won that grand slam in 2005 we completely dominated the Irish , when we were very lucky to beat England. I agree we have struggled at Landstown , so I'm hoping that Croke Park will not have the same effect .

Ireland Wales 6-3 half time. Hook will be on after 10 mins of second half.

Wales to win in the (unexpected) sunshine.

Won a good few quid on Wales; gave it back on the dire England performance.

Wet in Paris. Will punt at half-time.
