BAFTA TV awards (Sunday 20th April!)

Today's Bettingzone Market News:

1720: Eastenders has emerged as the red hot favourite at 8/11 with Paddy Power to win the BAFTA for Best Continuing Drama after the BAFTA academy chose to leave Coronation Street off this year's list of nominees.

It’s the first time in over ten years that Coronation Street has failed to make the shortlist with the judges opting instead for Holby City, Emmerdale and The Bill.

In the Best Entertainment category Paddy Power make it a close call between Strictly Come Dancing at 4/6 and Britain’s Got Talent at 15/8 but the real winners of the prestigious awards are expected to be ITV in the Sports coverage category for their coverage of last year’s Rugby World Cup.

Meanwhile, Cranford, the 19th century period drama based on the books by Elizabeth Gaskell is the 5/4 favourite to walk away with the audience award for Programme of the Year.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power said: "This year’s BAFTA nominations have thrown up a few surprises both good and bad.

"While it’s disappointing to see longtime favourites Corrie lose out on a nomination, it’s a nice surprise to see fresh competition amongst the categories from the BBC's Cranford."

This year’s BAFTA Awards will take place on Sunday 20th April.

Re: BAFTA TV awards (Sunday 20th April!)

Well I suppose it's more about the presentation rather than the actual content. BAFTA generally not a big fan of Sky Sports.

The gambles are:

* Gavin & Stacey to beat Cranford (was punted into 'evens' but back up at 11/8 and still the favourite) and win the Sky+ Audience Award (3/1 from 12/1! That's a heck of a market move!).
* The Street to win Best Drama Series (4/9 from 8/11)
* Strictly Come Dancing to win Best Entertainment Series (8/15 from 4/6)
* Sky News' Glasgow Airport Attack to win Best News Coverage (6/4 from 2/1)

Betfair will be a good guide as the last category because those in the know at BAFTA like a punt. I'll be surprised if Zimbabwe being in the news doesn't give ITV News a much needed leg up but hey, a gamble's a gamble.

Re: BAFTA TV awards (Sunday 20th April!)

The Sky+ award is an interesting betting heat:

I'd tend to agree with Sky Bet over Paddy Power that of those shows Strictly Come Dancing probably has a mad enough organised voting base to give it the win.

Britain's Got Talent has timed it's run very well and it's got it's second series on pretty damn soon so that could win by the ITV bloc vote in itself. The Apprentice has a good following and it's latest series is on right now but can it's fans be bothered to vote!?

Cranford is the 'quality' nominee (it's a bit lowbrow in the highbrow scheme of things) and may be somehow given the win. I don't understand who'd vote for it though and the same goes to Gavin & Stacey who though despite having a loyal audience probably aren't as nuts as Doctor Who fans when it comes to voting. I can't be bothered to mention Andrew Marr's show.

I can't have a punt on it though.

WOW!! Some gambles landed there. I suppose Harry Hill's TV Burp getting TWO BAFTAs was a bit of a surprise.
