BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Here is last year's winner. Totally undeserved IMO.

Anyway, I have had a look at this year's betting and cant see a stand out candidate.

Betfair have:

Andy Murray 3.7
Monty Panesar 5.4
That Cunt from Little Britain 13.6 &
Steven Gerrard 15.5

England had a crap World Cup. No major shocks as far as the league or Champions' League so I cant see a stand out candidate in this one. Murray is up there because he has had fuck all competition thus far. Anyway, with the Ryder Cup just around the corner - I look at some of our golfers and cant help feeling they are worth an outside punt.

Surely we have to win the Ryder Cup on 'home' soil ??

Monty @ 30 seems a bit obvious for me. We have Luke Donald at 44 and Darren Clarke at 27.

I cant help feeling that after everything Darren Clarke has been though this year, 27 seems a big price for him. A good tournament and surely he will be hot favourite to scoop the award? The press would love it, bouncing back from tragedy etc etc. They would have a field day with the whole thing and would virtually guarantee his winning the award...

Thoughts?

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Oh and another one, Darren Gough is a popular sort. I see he has been re called to the 1 day squad. He could make an impact against pakistan and could be the hero in Australia.

A long shot I know but I have had a bit at 500's as I think as he comes into the public eye again his price will surely drop. Stands to reason doesnt it?

Whos Monty Penis in 2nd favourite?

Yeah I couldnt argue against a golfer, I do think Europe will win the Ryder cup. If David Walliams wins it, then this award becomes a disgrace imo I cant believe hes even there. Be a bit rubbish for Murray to get it either UNLESS he puts in a great show at the US OPEN next week, which to be fair isnt out of the question.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Muze - I think the whole Walliams thing is like the Crouchy affair last year. The beeb surely wouldnt allow it because it would make a mockery of the whole thing wouldnt it.
Anyone doing a celebrity marathon could win the award then.

Monty Sag Paneer is a dish available in my local curry house.

I just cant see anyone bar a golfer who will win anything this year.....

Well I think Walliams did actually achieve a very good time in the swim actually, I dont know the exact details. Certainly a nice achievement but Sports Personality of the year? I think not!

Well as I said if Murray has a great US Open, for example reaches the Semi Finals, then he would be firm favourite. Big If tho

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Darren Gough has absolutely no chance :loon Hes been called into the one day squad for the 1st time this calendar year today, as hes been overlooked before, mainly due to that dancing thing. He may well play in the ICC Champions Trophy but tbh nobody gives a toss about that the world over & even if England win it, its not big enough to make a difference in something like this. The away Ashes series never makes any impact on this award as theyre only 2 tests in by the time voting closes which isnt enough, & people would only vote for a cricketer at the end of the series, not half way through.
And the clincher is....he wont be in Australia as hes currently retired from test cricket. Sorry to be shout downing here AFU, but anybody following that as a tip other than to lay it off needs their head examining

Cant see a cricketer winning it 2 years on the trot & Monty hasnt done enough anyway.
A barren year.......

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year

As long as that Scottish wanker doesn't win it I have no interest at all in markets like these.

If he does win it just for getting into the top 20 players in the world it will just signal what an absolutely pathetic year it's been for British sport which it obviously has.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Can't see a golfer winning it even on the back of a successful Ryder Cup win. While golf is an individual sport 9/10ths of the time, the team part of the Ryder Cup is bigged up no end and I can't see an individual winning the SPOTY on the back of it.

Yes, I know Flintoff won it last year on the back of a team effort etc but that was over a series of test matches and he was a batsman/bowler (am I correct in that?, I know feck all about English Rounders).

The captains tend to rotate the players over the first two days and the most anyone player will play is 5 matches. Even winning all 5 wouldn't guarantee any massive "He won the Ryder Cup headlines".

Murray is still a cock but he looks like he could win it by default.

Surely it can't be another cricketer, Swoops makes a better arguement than I could for it not being one. Is that Monty Panesar not worth a lay then?

Walliams - well his channel was quite superb sporting achievement.

Quote:
The comedian spent the last year training with former Olympic modern pentathlete Greg Whyte.

Whyte described swimming the channel as "one of the toughest physical challenges on the planet".

Fewer than 10% of people who have attempted to swim the Channel have succeeded.
Did his time of 10 1/2 hours not ranking him in the top 50 something or others, maybe Channel swimmers?

He might be worth a small punt as its unlikely any one sporting achievement will occur in the next 6 months to rocket anyone to favouritism.

Mind you, for ODM's sake, I do hope Murray wins it, he would be gutted if his favourite sportsman missed out.

Murrays Mint, vote for him
