Re: 2005 Mercury Music Prize.

Just out of who i actually like i would have a little shot on The Magic Numbers at 7/1.

Most of the others bands etc i either don't like, or haven't heard of though.

Mercury Music Prize - 30th Sep

odds from Bluesq

as a wee warm up we could have a look at this-

Popjustice £20 Music Prize
On September 6th a panel of judges will meet in London to decide on the best British pop single of the last twelve months.

I dont like the sound of the Judges thingy. Didnt they used to have this on the phone? Kaiser Chiefs to do well in both?

Re: Mercury Music Prize - 30th Sep

Merged a couple of threads here to keep it all tidy

The exchanges are maybe important here to see what public opinion says.

A quick summary: Kaiser Chiefs shortened into 3.60ish, Bloc Party out to 5s, Magic Numbers into 7s, Coldplay out to 15s and above, KT Tunstall out to 17s, Seth Lakeman out to 42s.

Maybe some value in Kaiser Chiefs at BlueSq?

As for that pop thingy, I doubt Kaiser Chiefs could win, if only cos its got the word pop in the title. Things like Girls Aloud, Charlotte Church and Rachel Stevens are a lot more 'pop' than the Kaiser Chiefs, and would be bigger chances IMO.

September the 7th I think it is Komp. To be honest tho I cant see much point in betting on it. It would be nothing more than guessing

Re: Mercury Music Prize - 30th Sep

It kinda is and some unscrupulous folks have probably been making money off it for years.

It's thoroughly difficult to assess and you were to go by 'quality', you'll give yourself a headache. I'm not particularly confident to be honest with MIA though.

I've put £50 on MIA back with Bet Direct when she was 6/1 (started at around 16/1 with some bookies when betting started but has tumbled all the way down to 4/1).

Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and The Magic Numbers have been supported but I can't see any of 'em winning (make that don't want to see winning as I think KC and TMN can scupper MIA's chances). William Hill's novelty betting guy has tipped Anthony and the Johnsons and they're less than 10/1 with some bookies.

Coldplay won't win it (they don't tend to give the prize to multi-millionaires). K T Tunstall has been put up on the nominations list due to record company pressure (she like James Blunt have been promoted the fcuk out. James Blunt would probably have been on the list if it hadn't been for his record sales).

It's basically a bunch of guitar bands (and gal) versus MIA, the folkie and the other one who doesn't have a chance.

Watch out for late rumours as they can prove to be red herrings. Ms. Dynamite proved to be a winner. The last two years have brought up The Darkness (who was odds-on during the ceremony! Absolutely insane goings-on with the price-movements on Betfair!) and The Zutons (speculative punt at 12/1 brought their odds down but it was always going to be Franz Ferdidand).

....the voting panel don't tend to like being 'told' who to vote for. Whoever's announced the winner is going to be received with a groan imbued with hindsight of "D'oh!" from me unless it's MIA.

I'd go for 'hedging your bets' with a punt on Charlotte Church and Goldfrapp with that Popjustice thing but not particularly tempted at this stage. It's a joke of an award considering who the nominees are but what can you do? Don't bet, that's what.

Re: Mercury Music Prize - 30th Sep

Good advice Stereoman and nice to see you. I was trying to get a song entered in this years Eurovision song contest but i fell at the first hurdle. You know the one where you have to have a modicom of talent. Well that one

Surely the world are Kaiser Chiefs daft though and they cant not be seen to give them it? It doesnt work that way does it?

Re: Mercury Music Prize - 30th Sep

Bettingzone

Well Rupert's flip-flopped and thinking of The Magic Numbers as an outside bet whilst they're scared of being mauled by the Kaiser Chiefs (less than 2/1 in some places).

I dunno about that. Sometimes the heavily punted favourite will win (especially if the judges are in on it) but with a week to go, some other nominee will probably be punted on as well.

I'm thinking there might be late, late money for Antony and the Johnsons over the next seven days.

....still hoping MIA can win but there's little hype (or hope even) to support her chances.
