Now I'm no expert, no more than any bloke having a bet here, but I think I learnt a few things from that girl winning -
She was far from the best looking, even in her class - so don't look for the one you fancy - that's my tip...
But she did have a certain classiness about her, almost too beautiful to be the one you would fancy - does that make any sense at all?
You know, this is a true story about that girl I taught.
It was a big school, 1500 kids altogether, and a freind stopped me before going into a class one morning, telling me one of the students had won Miss Botswana the night before.
I said 'Don't tell me who' and had a go at listing the girls in the order I thought would be about right (teachers - we're an evil lot...)
I kid you not, Mpule was 7th in my list out of about 15!
The other thing I remember was that previously Miss Botswana used to be a really fat girl - the sort you'd have a bit of a laugh at during the competition.
It's funny, as that is exactly the kind of girl the local guys would really go for and they couldn't understand why others had a different opinion. In a sad twist, they, (and other countries) have now started picking the girls that they think 'others' would like, and I think Mpule was one of the first classic examples.
Of course it work the other way - Miss UK will always get a good laugh out here for being looking way too sick and skinny...
The more I have travelled around, the more I've noticed just how different peoples tastes in this area are (yes, the conversation often goes in that kind of direction, after a good chat about football of course...)
It's something I'd say to look out for these days anyway - you take a what is to you a traditionally good looking girl, and chances are the rest of the world will have a different taste. Looking for a winner here - and I'll be looking out for a girl who has some kind of cross-over appeal - that's about the
bet way I could decribe without being tastless...
So, now conjuring up a dreadful picture, I'm going to run my thumb over the contestants photos and tell you what my gut instincts are...
