They tend to be pretty shit I'll agree but from a betting perspective they are about as predictable as betting gets as most follow a similar pattern(altho Celeb Fame Academy bucked that trend to a certain extent.)
Like last week for example in Joseph - guy in bottom 2 from week before sings really out of tune, the only one to do so, yet still somehow avoids the bottom two that time round...absolutely barmy if you were betting based on merit as quite a few punters will do and as quite a few bookies will set their books, but it happens most weeks that someone wont be bottom 2 for 2 weeks in a row. Add in how ethnic minorities fare(not well, regardless of ability), and various other trends, and you usually have some easy money.
