Re: BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2007

Hmmm. Today's Bettingzone Market News:

1405: Following his victory, Andy Murray is now back in with a chance to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year with Hills offering 20/1 that he wins the prestigious title.

Murray is 1/5 to see off his opponent, Santoro (10/3) in the third round of the BNP Paribas Masters.

Hills expect an injury free Murray to contest the Majors next year and offer 7/1 he wins a Major in 2008 and 20/1 he wins Wimbledon.

"Andy Murray can beat anyone on his day and punters who backed him to win the Sports Personality at Even money in January will be hoping he can come up trumps in the next few weeks and qualify/win the Masters Cup," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2007

Yeah I can't argue that the bookies are hoping for an 'upset' like last year but hey, it could happen (well not by folks voting for Andy Murray).

It's not quite as silly as some sports tipping service putting up Tim Henman as one that the BBC will put on their shortlist BUT he's on William Hill's shortlist!

I don't understand how the BBC's shortlist of ten will include very few genuine winners this year.

My shortlist of ten right now would be:

* Lewis Hamilton (even though he tanked his last two races, he'll surely have the F1 rookie record for quite a long time)
* Ricky Hatton (the award ceremony's on the day after his fight with Mayweather BUT he'll be on the shortlist on the off-chance he causes an upset)
* Joe Calzaghe (if he beats Mikkel Kessler like he probably should do, he'll be an easy nominee)
* Christine Ohuruogu (well she did win a World Championship athletics gold medal after all)
* Dario Franchitti (Dan Wheldon didn't get much respect for succeeding in the US but surely Dario might?)
* James Toseland (the motorcycling equivalent of Formula Three BUT he's a fooking winner!)
* Frankie Dettori (it'd be almost cruel not to put him on the list but winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Authorised would have been the absolute clincher)
* Jonny Wilkinson (an indifferent kicking record at the Rugby Union World Cup but hey, who else was scoring the points?)
* Andy Murray (if he gets to Shanghai he'll definitely be on the list. As it is he'll be ranked in the top ten for the year's end so yeah, he'll definitely be on the list)

...I'm struggling for a credible tenth nominee! I said Jamie Murray earlier on in this thread!

For Scottish sporting achievement I'd put Dario Franchitti well well ahead of James McFadden and Andy Murray but Dario's on few peoples' radar.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2007

Today's Bettingzone Market News:

1300: Joe Calzaghe is even money with Ladbrokes to face legendary American Bernard Hopkins in his next fight - and William Hill say they'd make him odds-on at 8/13 to win that clash if it takes place.

The Welshman, who unified the super middleweight division with a unanimous points win over Mikkel Kessler at the weekend, is 4/1 with Ladbrokes to take on Roy Jones Jnr next.

A rematch with Kessler is a 5/1 chance whilst a domestic dust up with Carl Froch is available at 10/1.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "Calzaghe has nothing left to prove in the super middleweight division.

"A rematch with Kessler would hold no appeal, given the Dane has lost his titles and unbeaten record, whilst Calzaghe has nothing to gain from taking on Froch.

"In all likelihood Calzaghe will take advantage of his exposure to the stateside viewing public and square up to a big name American fighter at light heavyweight."

Hills are also betting on how many more fights Calzaghe will have before he officially announces his retirement and offer 10/1 that he has fought his last contest, 2/1 that he has just one more fight, 6/4 that he fights twice more and 2/1 for three or more.

"Old Father Time is catching up with Joe but as Evander Holyfield, George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins have shown, it is possible to box successfully at the highest level into one's forties," said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.

Hills say that over £1million was gambled on the Calzaghe fight with over 20 four-figure bets - the largest being £7500 - placed on Calzaghe, who started the fight as 4/9 favourite but was as long as 5/6 to win during the contest at the start of round five.

The Welshman is now 10/1 to win the BBC's sports personality of the year award with Ladbrokes, though Hills go 8/1 from 16s.

Sharpe added: "Joe is a real winner on the world stage, and although hot favourite Lewis Hamilton has won races he failed to take the Formula One world title.

"Joe has proved over 10 years that he is world class and to win the BBC Award would only be confirmation of that."

Hmmm. I guess Frankie Gavin's got a chance to make the shortlist what with winning the World Amateur lightweight title in Chicago last night (England's first ever champion in that category).

BBC SPORT | Boxing | Gavin claims historic world title

He'll be duking it out with Amir Khan for that tenth spot in my opinion.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2007

Today's Bettingzone Market News:

1100: Joe Calzaghe has been cut to 5/1 with Ladbrokes to win the BBC Sport Personality of the Year award after a run of bets.

The Welsh boxer, who recently defeated Mikkel Kessler to claim the undisputed Super Middleweight crown, narrowly missed out on the prize last year.

But his supporters reckon he'll make amends this time and have backed him in from 8/1.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "The phones have been red hot since the BBC showed his win over Kessler again which has brought him to a larger audience. He's now a five figure loser for us."

Formula One star Lewis Hamilton remains the odds on favourite for the award, but has eased from 1/3 to 2/5 following the Calzaghe plunge.

BBC Sport Personality of the Year: Lewis Hamilton 2/5, Ricky Hatton 3/1, Joe Calzaghe 5/1, Paula Radcliffe 16/1, Jonny Wilkinson 50/1, Justin Rose 50/1, Frankie Dettori 66/1.

==============

Hmmm. David Haye may yet shoulder-barge his way on the shortlist at this relatively late stage but I suppose you can have too many boxers being mentioned.
Will Daryl Peach get a shock mention!?

God, it just goes to show you why the hell this nation continues to just fall short on the world sports stage when you have someone who finishes 2nd in a championship being a huge favourite over a boxer who has just become the undisputed champion and has been champion now for 10 years.

I am by no means a big boxing fan but thats a huge achievement. Silly prices.

Re: BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2007

Irrelevant but some stuff about Christine Ohuruogu in today's Bettingzone Market News:

1110: Christine Ohuruogu has won her appeal against a lifetime Olympic ban for missing three out-of-competition drugs tests - good news for the punters who backed her at 20/1 with Hills to compete in the 2008 Games in Beijing.

The 23-year-old Londoner took her case to a Sports Dispute Resolutions Panel and successfully overturned a British Olympic Association by-law precluding athletes found guilty of drug-test offences from competing in future Games.

Ohuruogu, who in August sensationally won the 400 metres world title just three weeks after finishing a one-year suspension, is now clear to compete in Beijing next year.

In the aftermath of her world title win, Hills reported that they had slashed the odds about Ohuruogo running in Beijing from 20/1 to 5/2 after a flood of bets.

Spokesman Graham Sharpe said at the time: "It appears that the prevailing wisdom in the athletic world is that Christine may well be allowed to compete, on the basis that there is a precedent for athletes who have missed drugs tests being allowed to take part.

"We had punters breaking world records to dash to our shops to bet on Christine competing at the Games. However, our bet is for her physically to take part in the Games, and bets will be lost if she is ruled out through for any reason - a ban, through injury or for forgetting to turn up!"

Re: BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2007

The shortlist is out and it's these ten:

* Joe Calzaghe
* Ricky Hatton
* Lewis Hamilton
* Andy Murray
* Christine Ohuruogu
* Paula Radcliffe
* Jason Robinson
* Justin Rose
* James Toseland
* Jonny Wilkinson

Yesterday evening's Bettingzone Market News:

2040: Lewis Hamilton remains the odds-on favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award following the announcement of the shortlist.

The contenders were whittled down to 10 on Friday with Hamilton the bookmakers' favourite to receive the award on December 9.

The Formula One star, who narrowly missed out on the world title in his debut season, is a best price of 4/11 with bet365.

Boxers Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe appear to be the most likely challengers to Hamilton.

Interestingly Hatton fights Floyd Mayweather for the WBC welterweight title the day before the vote takes place. Should he win, he will hold good claims to being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Hatton is a 4/1 shot to win the BBC gong with Blue Square, while Calzaghe, who recently unified the world super-middleweight title with a win over Mikkel Kessler, can be backed at 7/1 with bet365.

The rest of the contenders are all at big prices with the bookmakers.

World 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and Paula Radcliffe represent athletics, while two members of England's rugby union team which were beaten in the World Cup final - Jason Robinson and Jonny Wilkinson - have made the shortlist.

World Superbike champion James Toseland, golfer Justin Rose and tennis ace Andy Murray are also nominated, meaning there are no footballers on the shortlist.

Equestrian star Zara Phillips won the 2006 award.

Hamilton shock at BBC nomination
Hamilton won three trophies at an awards ceremony on Sunday
Lewis Hamilton says he is stunned to be on the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
The McLaren F1 star is the favourite for the award, which will be voted for by the public during Sunday's show.

The 22-year-old told BBC Sport: "If I did win it would mean a huge amount to me. The greatest have won that award.

"I'm completely shocked by all the awards and nominations I have received. Never in a million years would I have thought I would have won so many."

Interview: Lewis Hamilton

The rookie finished runner-up in the race for the 2007 world title after making the most successful debut in Formula One history.

Hamilton won three trophies at a motorsport awards ceremony on Sunday and he received the Gold Star from the British Racing Drivers' Club on Monday. 606: DEBATE
Should Hamilton win Sports Personality of the Year?

Boxers Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe, and athletes Paula Radcliffe and Christine Ohuruogu, are among the contenders for the BBC award.

Golfer Justin Rose, motorcyclist James Toseland, tennis player Andy Murray and England rugby union stars Jonny Wilkinson and Jason Robinson complete the candidates.

Hamilton added: "I'm not going to be fussed if I don't win it. I know I'm up against some amazing talent so fair play to them if they win.

"I'm going there to enjoy the evening and meet people there that you have a lot of respect for in other parts of the business.

"If I had to vote for anyone, it would be Paula Radcliffe. She did fantastically well winning a marathon so soon after giving birth. She's an inspiration."
