I need help developing an idea

Suspect that this is a "Geek" problem but I'd liek to develop a Personal Punting Tool. Sounds good already, right :loon

O.k, now I'm not a fan of systems (witness Paul Ross' corner ratings and that one he compiles by women in the crowd eating pies, or something Keep mate that's why I say and leave the serious punting to us )

Where was I? Oh yeah - my PPT. Now I incorporate form into my picks as I'm sure most of you do to supplement / complement injuries/suspensions, new signings, gut-feel etc,etc (Last one is a valid punting tool imo).

What I'd like to do (and it's not rocket science this one) is have some spreadsheet / program which gives me a total number of points from the last 6 games for both teams and then the differnce. Another column would then give me the home team's form from the last four games and the reverse for the away team. The final figure I'd like to see is goals F and A for both of those points totals.

You'll probably gather that what I want is at-a-glance relative form.

Anyone else think this is a crap idea?

I suspect from conversing with Komp pre-season when he was implementing his ASS that this will be a league pad thing.

I'm completely clueless when it comes to this sort of thing and tend to rely on memory and arthimetic.

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks,

AMP

AMP - hope I don't get jumped on for posting the link, but I think it is exactly what you want.

http://www.punters-paradise.com/foot...hip.php#Recent

If not, let me know and I'll run something up for you - which leagues are you interested in?

Edit: at the top of the screen are two boxes and a button, if you copy and paste the names of the teams you are interested into these, and press the button it will reload the page with those teams highlighted.

Re: I need help developing an idea

Nah doc - you're ok and thanks for the link.

That's kind of the thing I'm looking for. I did like the "Recent form" bit.

However, when I entered the team names into the "search for teams" boxes for home and away nothing happened.

I currently use this site for all that kind of info and think it's the mustard:

www.footballwebpages.co.uk

However, I usually have to have about 4 screens open in firefox to look at each game I'm researching and then flick between them.

I'd just like it all to be on 1 screen with the Comparison tool.

Now I think about it a search function would be great and I pressume a lot easier than having to compile fixtures.

Can't be too difficult can it? (Well, it would be for me admittedly!)

Thanks again,

AMP

AMP

there is home and away form there also. Not sure why you couldn't get the search to work - you did press the button as well as fill in the boxes, didn't you?
The team names need to be the same as in the table - so cut and paste is the easiest way to ensure that.

If you give me the specific information for exactly what stats you want (an example would be helpful) and which leagues you want, I'll see what I can do.

Re: I need help developing an idea

Something like this Doc,

18 16 5 Man U 12 10 2 V 9 8 8 West Ham 10 12 11 (+8)

Starting with the figures to the left of Man U thats form and golas from last 6. The same info is to the right of WH with the difference in points in brackets. Either side of the V (and this info if possible should be hidden) ia the last 4 home and away games respectively .

This kind of info would be useful to me as I'd see the +8, then check out the Home / away form stats, and then the fixtures that made up these stats.

I'm sorry I didn't read your edit before, it does highlight the info when you cut and paste. However I was thinking of something like a macro that would pull the info up on it's own.

Apologises if it sounds like I'm dreaming out loud.

Re: I need help developing an idea

hi AMP , I use the H2Hstats site and go to the two half smilie face icon.

It has this info Last 4 Home v. Last 4 Away

I tend to use this info to form my initial list and progress other factors to reduce the list.

I would prefer a last 4 games v last 4 games comparison though ,which has to be done "manually" by scanning the results at the bottom of the page.I do like the fact that they have the league pos of the opponents.

I hope this is of help

Tonight's fixtures here
http://www.h2hstats.com/soccer/index...3&y=2006&cp=2#

I must say doc , i'm finding more and more useful info on P.P. , so much to read ,so little time

Re: I need help developing an idea

See Treath - this is what I'm talking about.

We all (apart from maybe Gett1in ) use form guides to various degrees. WOuldn't it be great if you didn't have to get that 4 * 4 last games manually? (or the 6 that I use).

Yeah - dug that site T. Could do without some of the info like Avg point per game and stuff but I like how it also included all the stuff on one page and had the fixtures. Snazzy colors too.

A link to the odds? Hmmm. Maybe that'd be good with a blank box perhaps to put your own perceived odds in.....

Re: I need help developing an idea

AMP, Traeth

I suggest you digest your ideas and see can you come up with a coherent (not implying the above isn't! ) wishlist

I can't promise anything, but if it is reasonable I'll do my best to implement it, althought it may take a few weeks

Re: I need help developing an idea

That really would be great DOD. Agree at this moment it is a wishlist of things a punter likes me wants to see when it comes to form. I'll work on a "should" / "should not" (within reason) premise (e.g. it should show pts from last 6 games, it shouldn't show AVG pts / goals per game) and post something up on here.

Thank you both (and Keema for looking in) for your input.

Will do that Doc , thanks.

one factor that I have not seen but like to consider is if current form pos is higher than league position.

Like AMP I like stats for last 6 matches ,but like to look at results for last 8/10 matches with league position of opponents.

Will have a serioous think about my "wishlist"

Just like Christmas

cheers

Re: I need help developing an idea

The problem with all this is that you shouldn't take all the logic or "gut feeling" out of the equation and end up with just stats. I know that you guys wouldn't do that but automating the system takes some of the human analysis out of it doesn't it?

A prime example the other week with West Ham getting beaten at home by a great big pile of steaming shite who would normally struggle to beat my old school team if they were playing outside Portsmouth.

In this instance, and many others, the pure stats are a complete red herring because of West Ham's priorities. I know you guys would see through stuff like that if you were looking through the form yourselves but would you spot it buried in your automated system?

Re: I need help developing an idea

Nah. Think I discussed this in an earlier post on this thread. I'm looking at developing a tool, not a system. Form is just part of my picking technique (along with "gut feel" as I mentioned earlier) but as part of my form analysis I have to have several windows open at once in firefox and store a bit of data in my old noggin just for one game. The way I'd see this going is that it cuts down the analysng time (which can be considerable) and sticks all the relevant data on one handy screen.
