Re: Paul Jewell resigns

Very suprised by this one - Jewell keeps the club up and according to Sky Sports has walked today.

I wasnt aware of tensions in the club or indeed at boardroom level. Everything seemed to be going ok for them, massive shocker this one IMO.

Jewell is seen as the leading candidate to take over at Manchester City if they sack Stuart Pearce, after their disappointing season ended with a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

Wigan chief executive Brenda Spencer said earlier: "I wouldn't like to see Paul leave the club and nor would the chairman or the board of directors but you would have to ask Paul that question."

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

Been confirmed on the BBC that Jewell has left the club today. Apparently been linked with the (soon to be vacant) post at the Council House (Man City).

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

Be interesting to see how he does at a bigger club. Was a goalpost away from a very different result yesterday and after last year's heroics has a poor season not helped by some mixed signings.

Can't do any worse than the helpless Pearce anyway surely? Would City fans think he is a big enough "name"?

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

Hey ya cheeky cnut!!

As i mentioned why take on a new man that finished in a lower position than Pearce as it does not make sense, ddint he do teh same thing when he avoided relegation with Bradford a few yrs ago?

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

Yeah but City have more potential and he could achieve with them. Double the gates, probably double to spend on players and wages - he would have a chance with City. The fact that Wigan are even in the Premiership is down to him. Just because he finished below Citeh, doesnt mean he's a bad manager.

I look forward to seeing Emile Heskey donning the blue shirt sometime soon.....

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

Jewell imo won't going going to City, he's just left Wigan as he needs time away from the game, and sworn to Whelean he's not got another job lined up. Weather he's a honest man and keeps his word is another matter though.

Wigan wtf...

have appointed Chris Hutchings as manager.

Hutchings took over from Jewell at Bradford all those years ago.

Oddly enough, the Bradford chairman deemed 17th position in the Premiership (widely regarded as a phenomenal season for Bradford by most) "insufficient" so Jewell left. Hutchings took over (stepped up from Assistant) and managed one win in twelve in the following Premiership season. He was sacked after five months.

Hutchings returned to being Jewell's assistant later, and it seems history is repeating itself.

Jewell saves a team from the slide, finish 17th, leaves the club for Hutchings to take over...

Strange..

Very strange indeed. Although I believe Jimmy if he says that he's not going to another club as he seems an honest enough chap (No scouser jokes please)

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

The way he had to be dragged away from the 4th official when he returned the ball back to a Sheff Utd player for a throw at the start of injury time, I'd say it could well be a break from the pressure tbh.....I thought he was going to belt him
This wont go down well with the City fans, but I think he'd be a good appointment myself, & I honestly see them only being linked with his 'type' of manager

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

I'm not so sure Swoops as he's similar to Pearce in that he wears his heart on his sleeve and i don't think he will get any more response than pearce would allthough he has probably got a better eye for spotting a player that can do a job allthough if he had brought Heskey to the club he would have been crucified.

As i said i have a feeling were going to go all continental for the first time ever and put the likes of John Bond way behind us, i hope so anyhow as we've had the brit brigade for decades now and nothings changed.

Whoever comes in will have a few bob to spend as nothing of note has been spent for yrs now apart from that on Samaras but the SWP money more than covered that.

i think there will be a tidy sum in the kitty for whoever comes in like City did with keegan and i only hope it is spent more wisely.

Re: Paul Jewell resigns

I reckon when he resigned with the intention of having a break. However you know how football managers are, they cant rest and hate the idea of being out of a job. I bet he was sat round the house bored shitless annoying the Missus yesterday.

I think he would do a decent job at City. Same goes for Big Samba in that respect.

The Geordies regularily slate Sam for playing crap football (what exactly do Newcastle play these days?) and for bringing dross into the Premiership. Lets not forget that it's this dross that has regularily done more than both Man City and Newcastle in the league. He out performs clubs with bigger budget and IMO is a miracle worker.

I think we're too hard on him and are too quick to praise foreign coaches like GH. Just what exactly has GH achieved in his managerial career. Prior to Liverpool he was 'praised' with running the French football academy. Other than that, what has the man ever done?

Big Sam has achieved more than GH, relative to the amounts spent and the expectations of their respective clubs.
