Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
If i was a liverpool fan i would be pretty pissed right now with the performances and the way the side is going at the minute.
Ignore the background stuff and what not affecting the players. This will be the last thing on their mind when they step onto the pitch IMO.
For the money Benetiz has spent (and i dont care what he has recouped) the club should be performing far better than they are.
He won't be able to live off the CL win and final forever.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
thats the funny thing, everybody can see it apart from about 80 per cent of liverpool fans, he has spent 45 million this season and i only see them going backwards, this was supposed to be the season they would put in a strong challenge for the league but at this rate they will be lucky to get 4th place, but they can always blame the board.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
I think he does play his best eleven, the only problem is that his best eleven isnt really very good.
We've had a few injuries to Alonso, Agger & Pennant who would normally make the first team, but on the whole we need more quality accross the park.
More match winners who can turn a game when you're playing badly. How many times have United been saved from a bore draw in the last 2 seasons by a Ronaldo goal - but that's what you get when you have the best player in the world in your team. When you look to our team, you ask who do we have of the same calibre that can do what he does? And once again that comes down to money. I feel like I am repeating myself, but we dont spend the same as our rivals and so we cant expect to perform the same.
People such as Tom coming out with statements like "Liverpool have spent £X and so should be challenging for the title", dont really appreciate the facts of the matter.
Benayoun for example isnt a very good player. He's a distinctly average player who signed for an average fee. Kewell on the left wing is a player who cost a couple of million some years back and has been plagued by injury. Given the funds, we would have Mancini on one wing and Simao on the other. Rafa has been after Simao since 2004, but in successive seasons has been told by the board we cant afford him. How many times was Mourinho, for example, denied transfer funds? How many times has David Gill told Ferguson he couldnt buy players?
Do you honestly believe, given the same budget Ferguson has, Benitez would have Jermaine Pennant in the team? Would he fuck, he is merely cutting his cloth according to his means.

Fergie proved in the early part for Man Utd that he could get players in for next to nothing who went on to do well.
I also believe your really overrating Simao too. Not much better than Pennant to me. Way too inconsistent.

Who did he get in on the cheap in the early days?
We could wax lyrical about how Herbert Chapman bought players a, b or c for sixpence and a quarter of lemon sherberts in his days of Arsenal.
Anyway, the football climate has changed mate. What people did doesnt matter. The only thing that matters is right here right now - how good is your squad and how much can you spend each summer.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
And in any case, I remember as a kid, United spent big on Pallister, Irwin, Ince, Wallace etc.
I think you'll probably find that even back then, they were outspending their rivals from down the '62. Not achieving more but definitely outspending.

Andee - have you booked your trip to Moscow yet? Make sure you book your visa at least 4 weeks in advance mate.
Going Milan on the train from Paris for the Inter game if you fancy it?
