Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
I agree Tom, seems completely daft to have to think about a friendly game in between a European qualifier, mad.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
Anyway, it appears today that Spurs have bid £15m for Dean Ashton and having had that bid rejected are considering offering £20m to the more than 'appy 'ammers.
Fucking crazy. Ashton is an England B or even C player when he's fit. And I say when he's fit, because his injury record is shit. Fucking hell the football world needs its head looking at.

Ridiculous isn't it. That makes Bents transfer look value as at least he is available most of the season where Ashton misses a good few months every year.
I don't even rate him that highly as a forward anyways. Mid table club at best he should be at IMO.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
Liverpool have officially announced that the Garth Barry deal is off.
Does that mean that common sense has prevailed and we've decided that enough is enough? IE: that their valuation was overly inflated and we arent going to be ripped off?
Or does it suggest that we cant afford the players we want?
I'll tell you 1 thing for sure, if Chelsea or United wanted him, they could have bought him outright 2 months ago. They would have worried about selling their surplous player (Xabi Alonso) at a later date.
Just shows the gulf between the clubs in the Prem.
Once again Rafa will probably get slagged off by the press if he doesnt mount a title challenge but its clear for all to see that the clubs at the "top" are not on an equal footing financially. Even Arsenal cant compete. Its a 2 horse race for 1st place and a 2 horse race for 3rd place....

Liverpool Football Club have today released the following press statement.
Liverpool FC chief executive Rick Parry said: "There has been a lot of comment today regarding our position with regards to Gareth Barry.
"This is not about questioning the manager's judgement or the ability of a particular player. The owners have clearly demonstrated throughout the year they are willing to back Rafa in the transfer market and will continue to do so.
"It is obviously the selling club's prerogative to put whatever price they want on the player, but on this occasion Liverpool think the price quoted is too high."

The name of David Silva has aligned itself with Liverpool after chief executive Rick Parry all-but-ruled-out the signing of Gareth Barry.
Parry confirmed that Aston Villa’s asking price has been deemed too expensive by the Liverpool board – who only saw Barry as a necessary purchase when Xabi Alonso appeared to be heading to Juventus.
Alonso’s immediate future will be tied to Liverpool when he becomes cup-tied in Europe on Wednesday, with Benitez left with no other option than to play the visionary passer due to the Olympic commitments of Javier Mascherano and Lucas Leiva.
And that will bring Silva’s name to the top of Benitez’s wishlist, after the Liverpool manager admitted his squad if short of a left-sided player on Saturday.
Silva has snubbed a new Valencia contract, and the Liverpool board are reportedly ready to give the green light to a £16 million player whom they feel is a more necessary purchase than Barry.
Parry cleared up The Reds’ stance on Barry, telling the Liverpool website: "There has been a lot of comment regarding our position with regards to Gareth Barry.
"This is not about questioning the manager's judgment or the ability of a particular player. The owners have clearly demonstrated throughout the year they are willing to back Rafa in the transfer market and will continue to do so.
"It is obviously the selling club's prerogative to put whatever price they want on the player, but on this occasion Liverpool think the price quoted is too high."

It's like the Americans are playing silly buisness games with both Villa and Liverpool.
Why would Lerner/O'Neil want to keep hold of Barry when he's expressed a wish to leave (he wont be any good for them this season). Surely Villa have alot more to lose than Liverpool do here, they could end up getting nothing.
What/how much are they squabling over? Must be more to it than meets the eye.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
I think Silva is paper talk mate.
I mean if you lose out on Gareth Barry, why on earth do you then set your sights on Silva?
They are two totally different players. Surely you either wait for Barry or identify another player who can fill that role.
For what its worth, I think we're better off keeping Xabi and investing what little money we have in a creative player for the left side.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
Are you referring to our sponsor and main corporate partner striking up a deal with that abhorrant rag, The S*n?
Boils my piss that does. I've let them know what I think already and I'll never buy another can of their shitty fucking lager again.
I posted on RAWK something about MacKenzie having another dig at Liverpool again today - cant be arsed typing it up again here. It winds me up too much.
Its in the Hillsborough section on there Andee...

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
It will be interesting to see if Barry plays tonight. If he does then he's cup tied until the new year which will certainly go some way to making the Liverpool owners minds up about his value.
If O'Neil wants to be a stubborn bastard, this is his chance.

Re: The Official Liverpool thread 2007/08
I see Liverpool are close to signing Albert Riera for £9m , strange one that as for all his technical ability the guys slow as hell and the Prems not gone any slower since he left City.
Its a lot of cash for a player allready having failed in the Prem and I hope Benitez knows something we don't as he's no Gareth barry.
