Re: Champions League Group Stages - Draw Today!

Kiko, you're one of the many people that have said that. Been getting texts from my sister (Celtic fan).

Real are the Spanish champs.

Pish group, we'll have them all.

Re: Champions League Group Stages - The Draw & all the Banter

Was always going to be a toughie, to quote the cliche, their ain't any easy games at this level....unless you pull Rosenborg.

Celtic need to sort out the away form, try and take something from Donetsk or Benfica this time and also ensure we beat them both at home. Milan, well, they never really look like a dyanmic attacking team like Barca or whoever but they did win the bloody thing last season. Would take the 2nd round two 0-0's we had with them last season right now. They will be murder to play at Parkhead as they are technically excellent and Kaka can do you in a blink of an eye.

We could finish 2nd, we could finish 4th, we could even finish 3rd. Nothing would surprise me.

Rangers - stinker. Although they do look well set up to play away from home in Europe this season based on the qualifying games. Wouldn't be a massive surprise to me to see them nick a point in France or Germany. If they do they have to capitalise by winning the home games.

Re: Champions League Group Stages - The Draw & all the Banter

Man U v Roma jumps out instantly and if they had any sense they would tell their fans not to travel as they should qulaify from that group with ease anyhow.

The English Teams seem to have the rub of the green with Rangers not landing to badly but Lyon who they will be up against most for 2nd spot have done well over the last few yrs and it won't be an easy task to push them aside.

Celtic have landed in a bastard of a group along side last yrs winners AC Milan, even the outsider in that group Shakhtar have invested heavily over the summer in some quality players and on last nights display Celtic will do brilliantly well if they do qualify.

I know everyone wants Rosenborg in their group but I feel duty bound to spring to their defence.
Looking at all the other contestants I think I too would take my chances with the Norwegians but remember: it´s one thing to play football in the temperate zones in December and another thing to travel to Trondheim in a snow blizzard where they´ve proved so many times that you can´t take the 3pts for granted.

No more of that "give us Rosenborg" arrogance please.
It usually comes back to bite you in the arse.

Peter,

Hear what you are saying but they are no where near the dominant side they were 5 or 6 years ago and even their impressive home record, which was what made them a feared side in the CL groups, is gone. Away from home they are generally shocking nowadays.

Re: Champions League Group Stages - The Draw & all the Banter

Mostly true what you say, Crowie.
Gone are the days when they went to Dortmund and won 3-0, when they had players like Berg and Hoftun who measured up against the best in Europe and when they had one of football´s best brains in charge (Nils Arne Eggen) but they are a team in the re-building and while I wouldn´t expect ém to create too many shockwaves, it might be the foolish virgin who takes Rosenborg too much for granted.

Re: Champions League Group Stages - The Draw & all the Banter

Yeah Rosenborg at present are a shadow of the side they used to be. When you see how much money the other clubs in Pot 4 had spent it was obvious that Rosenborg were the draw everyone wanted.

I mean Celtic have been drawn with Shakthar who have spent close to £40m this summer. Its no disrespect when people say they want Rosenborg. But can you really feel annoyed by it all when your seeing that?

They did have an excellent side Peter, even old Harald Brattbakk, Strand (at his best), Rushfeldt, Jakobsen. A great team but I think the team grew old together and replacements either didn't come in quickly enough or were good enough.

Just looking at the Wiki page on them now, home win of 10-0 in 96, away wins of 7-0 in 94 and 99 and then a 1-6 home defeat in 2003. "Old" Rosenborg from the mid 90's would NEVER lose 6-1 at home.

Some great European achievements on here

Yup, I´ll have my arse chewed to a pulp if I dare to suppose Rosenborg will do anything to upset the applecart this autumn.
I´m merely standing their corner when all others are using them as a coconut shy.
