Souness interested in Ireland job

Souness interested in Ireland job

Graeme Souness would be interested in the Ireland job

Former Newcastle and Rangers manager Graeme Souness has said he would think seriously about any offer to take charge of the Republic of Ireland.
"If I was offered the Ireland job, I would be very interested," Souness told the Irish Daily Star.
"Why wouldn't any manager be keen on leading such a great country's football team, working with a squad which I believe has a lot of potential?"
The position became available after Steve Staunton was sacked last week.
Souness, who also been in charge at Liverpool, was last in management at Newcastle but was sacked in February 2006 18 months after taking the position at St James' Park. Since then he has worked as a football pundit for English and Irish broadcasters. And the 54-year-old had reservations whether Irish people would welcome a former Rangers boss.

Also speculation that Terry Venables is interested. Mmmmm, I think he might save that decision till after 21st November to see what England are up to next year.

I would love to have Souness at a dinner party or something similar because what that guy doesn't know about football I think you could write on a stamp.

I'm a big fan of his btw and think he would do any team a service

Rubbish.

He destroyed Liverpool, ruined Newcastle and was on the way to ruining Blackburn.

He had a good run with Rangers and has got job after job (and payoff after payoff) on that basis ever since.

Useless in the transfer market and a woeful man manager.

Re: Souness interested in Ireland job

The only good thing I can say about Souness is that he isn't Dave O'Leary who is red hot favorite at the moment. Souness has been commentating on Ireland's equivalent of MOTD for the last 6 or 7 months and I think he's excellent there but his old school style of man management won't work and I'd agree with AFU 100% that outside Rangers he has been terrible.

I went to the game against germany, didn't go to the one against Cyprus (and could barely give away our two prepaid tickets ) and we need major surgery if we're not going to slip further. The FAI have a good war chest from the massive selling games at Croke Park so they can afford to offer a good salary. Whether that will get the right man is another matter.

I’d be inclined to go with an Irish/English/Scottish manager. We need an organiser and motivator like Walter Smith/Alex McLeish. We haven’t got the players skills wise or temperament wise to start playing an expansive game. We have got the players to be organised and hard to beat. Problem is there’s not a lot out there at the moment. If the FAI screw this one (high probability!) up we’ll be shooting it out with Wales in the basement of international football.
