Footy Violence Today - Italy Again....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm - looks like the Italian disease has cropped up again this weekend. A Lazio fan was killed in an accident as Police tried to break up fighting between Juventus fans and Lazio fans at a motorway service station in Tuscany. Reports from Italy suggested that Police fired warning shots at a group of scrapping fans and that one of the Lazio fans Gabriele Sandri, was hit and subsequently died. Today's Inter/Lazio game was called off today.

Anyway, the match in Bergamo between Atalanta and Milan was called off 10 minutes into the second half after fans tried to pull down barriers to get access to the pitch and the Police. There had been scraps all day with fans apparently after twatting a copper or two in revenge for the death.

Various sites reported trouble between fans and the bizzies at other matches around the country and in serie B games too.

Wonder if UEFA will take any action against this? Italy clearly has a football violence problem. Yes the Police fired the shots that killed the fan. However, rival groups of fans meeting up on the motorway for a scrap before the game, its madness.

Re: Footy Violence Today - Italy Again....

There were no Serie A fixtures scheduled in for next week because of the International break, but now the trouble in Italy has led to Serie b and C matches next week being called off too. Just pulled this from the BBC.

Italian football to be suspended

Minister Melandri has called for tough action to be taken
The Italian Football Federation has suspended next weekend's Serie B and C matches after the latest fan violence.

On Sunday, games were halted across the country and police attacked after a Lazio fan was shot by a policeman.

Italy's Euro 2008 qualifier away to Scotland on Saturday means there are no top-flight Serie A games next weekend.

Sports minister Giovanna Melandri had earlier asked for "a strong gesture, in particular suspending the championships for a few weeks".
