Derby County taken over by US money

It's been the talk for some time now and the butt of several jokes regarding Disney and a Mickey Mouse clube etc etc.

No details at the moment but it's happened.

Bit late for the transfer window. Makes you wonder if that is deliberate.

Derby set for American takeover

Derby County is set to become the latest Premier League club to be taken over by an American-based consortium.
The Rams, who are currently bottom of the table, will make a formal announcement about the deal by Monday.
BBC Sport understands the new owners will put a significant amount of money into the club, which is seen as a long-term deal.
But the new consortium is not Shamrock Holdings, an American company owned and run by Roy Disney, nephew of Walt.
Shamrock Holdings had been linked with a takeover of the Pride Park club in recent days.
It is believed the successful consortium is drawn from investors with wide and varied experience of American football, baseball and basketball. The club hope that the new deal will end of years of financial uncertainty and will help raise the club's profile. Manager Paul Jewell was aware of the likely takeover when he joined the club in December and is believed to have met with the consortium.

Re: Derby County taken over by US money

So the question is.....why would anyone in their right might want to spend £50 million on that shower of shit?

This guy thinks he has the answer

BBC SPORT | Mihir Bose

Americans banking on Derby

The Derby takeover is fascinating. The first question is why should five unnamed investors, three Americans, a Chinese and a Korean invest in a club doomed to relegation?
The answers to that question are complex and we first need to understand the deal. The details announced are sketchy but well-placed sources have told me fascinating facts which go a long way to explaining why Derby have been taken over.
The deal has been described as the £50m deal. Probe behind that headline figure and the reality is around £20m of that money is going to the existing directors. The new investors are also taking over the existing debt. This amounts to about £8m of working capital. There is also the 30-year mortgage on the stadium at Pride Park, around £15m (the stadium is valued at around £60m).

I am told around £10m may be available for players. The investors have not been named and I am told others may join them. They have been put together by General Sports and Entertainment Group. They already manage sports franchises in the United States but they are attracted by Derby because it provides them for the first time with a global sports brand.
There is nothing in the world of sport that quite matches the Premier League in terms of pulling power and Derby, at least until May, are part of that brand.
Derby may well be doomed to relegation. They have seven points so far and may struggle to get to 30 points come May. But the club will definitely earn £30m from the Premier League TV deal. And while relegation would hurt, the next two seasons in the Championship would see Derby much richer than their rivals.
Derby will earn £11.5m a year in parachute payments, nearly five times as much as other clubs in that league. That money will give them more chance of bouncing back up.
Then there are the property aspects of the deal to consider. There is planning permission to develop Pride Plaza, the area around the
stadium
, an area of 120,000 square feet. And the training ground of 25 acres is situated in a prime residential area.
So given that the investors are paying £20m for the shares of Derby, this for them is a very good bargain in a franchise which they can see making them money. Yes the fans may hope that the team will benefit and the talk is that the investors will invest in players. But they will also want to develop Derby as a brand.
Yet more evidence that football these days, even at the very foot of the Premier League, is big and attractive business.

I worry for the future of the EPL. Soon enough, every owner will be foreign based and there will be no counterweight to their demands. We will have 'regular season' games being played in Seoul, Beijing, New York, Johannesburg, Doha etc before too long.

I wouldn't worry too much AFU.

Football is worldwide bar in the US whereas NFL is only in the US which is why they went overseas to try and promote the game a bit more.

£10m to invest in Derby? Need about 10 times that for any improvement.

I dont think you do mate. As a Championship club, £10m now and more when needed should be enough to see them in the top 3 / 4 teams again next year and battling it out for Promotion/Play offs again, if they stick with their current boss and keep things stable.

Exactly. 10 mill plus a couple of payouts to come from the Premiership. It's still got to be spent wisely obviously but it puts them in good shape compared to.....say.....some sack of shit who are currently trying to crawl their way out of League 1.

I agree here ODM. Just look at what a little bit of cash has done at QPR or a bit of organisation has done for Palace - it doesnt take mega bucks to get out of the Championship and into the Prem.

You're right. Decent fitness training, organisation and tactical nouse can help to build a decent team. A bit of cash usually does more harm than good though, so fingers crossed

Re: Derby County taken over by US money

I don't know why people keep moaning about Yanks taking over clubs when if they followed Citys trend you could all have a mass murderer in charge like us if ure lead to believe what you read.

If Derbys new owners turned the club around and created another Chelsea you want see many Rams fans complaining, same too with Liverpool , if they were riding high at the top of the prem then Hicks and co would be God.

Its all about who has the most money to spend and the one with the fattest wallet wins.

Re: Derby County taken over by US money

Rams fans aren't complaining Slick With the cunts they've had in charge recently Pol Pott could take over and they wouldn't complain.

The vast majority of the ones I know are realistic and know that they were lucky to go up, harboured a slim slim chance of staying up but would be better off 2009 in the CCC than they would have been without the experience. Plus, they have the chance to visite The Emirates etc and have a decent day out. Even if they fail to get promotion next year there won't be many complaining I reckon. Now if they fail the year after, then the natives will get restless and start talking about "being in the Premiership where they belong", along with the other 45 clubs who belong in the Prem
