Spurs win chase to sign Woodgate

Woodgate has played 16 times for Middlesbrough this season

Tottenham have won the race to sign Middlesbrough's England defender Jonathan Woodgate.
The 28-year-old was reportedly the target of three Premier League clubs who were all keen on signing the former Real Madrid centre-back. Newcastle had revealed their desire in re-signing Woodgate, but the other interested club was unknown. But Woodgate, who has played 16 times for Middlesbrough this season, has decided to join Spurs.

Wonder where Dawson will be going in Summer?

Jonathan Woodgate

When will people learn eh? This lad has moved for some massive fees in his time and every time the move is a let down. I believe his career transfer fees total £37.4 million, going off the fees on soccerbase and the net generally.

He has made a total of 244 first team appearances and he's 28.

Jamie Carragher, albeit 2 years older, has made 500 career starts.

John Terry is 1 year younger and has made 339 career starts.

Obviously Woodgate is a talented player and when fit, is one of the best in the Premiership. But the fact that he never plays should surely put off any prospective employer? He'll be another Ledley King for Spurs, someone that comes in, plays 5 decent games and is then out injured for another 5.

Cant understand why people will still risk huge sums of money on a crock like Woody.

Re: Jonathan Woodgate

£8 Mill does seem a lot of money for a crocked player like AFU has mentioned but i suppose with the current shortage of decent centrehalfs its the price u have to pay, wouldent like to put a price on Micah Richards if thats the current rate, saying that Ferdinhand went for silly money didnt he and no defender since has gone for a similar fee that i can recall, Fergie was well and truely stitched up on that one.

Its a shame about Woodgate as he's a cracking player when fit and i still havent fathomed how he was not called into the England setup when we needed a central defender most in those last few Euro Qualifiers when Lescot was chucked into the deepend.
Still Spurs have a hell of a player on their hands if he remains Injury free in a position that has been a weakspot for them for a long time now.

Re: Jonathan Woodgate

If I was a Spurs fan, I would be worried about his fitness. He's been bad for the last 8 years or so and his injuries and recovery time will only worsen with age. Yeah he's a decent player when fit, but whats the point in having someone that only plays 50% of the time? They need stability and 2 central defenders to play week in, week out.

As for the money aspect, you dont have to spend a fortune to get a decent player - I suppose you just have to be savvy with who you buy. I bet there's a few decent African centre halfs knocking about for half of that fee if you scout properly.

Re: Jonathan Woodgate

Apparently there were a whole host of Prem clubs interested - including Villa, Arsenal and the Toon as well. Madness IMO when you consider what say Vidic or Agger cost and they were relatively recent purchases too.
