IRISH DUO LINING UP MOVE FOR LIVERPOOL

JP McManus

Sunday April 13,2008

Irish horse racing magnates John Magnier and JP McManus are considering buying into Liverpool.

Magnier, who owns Irish horse racing stud Coolmore, and influential racehorse owner McManus did at one stage become Manchester United’s major shareholders before selling out to the Glazers and banking an £80million profit.

Now they are considering investing in Liverpool, which is being torn apart through the battle involving bickering American co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

It’s heartbreaking. I’m almost lost for words about the damage that has been done to the club
Former Liverpool chairman David Moore

The duo’s negotiations are still in the early stages and it’s not yet certain whether they are looking for a part share of the club or are planning a complete takeover. But the pair – regular visitors to the city for racing at Aintree – are keen to play a role in the future of the club.

Last night former Liverpool chairman David Moores, the club’s life president and still a director, broke his silence on the affair and admitted the club had become “a laughing stock”.

In an emotional outburst, the man who received £88million for his majority stake in the club said: “It’s heartbreaking. I’m almost lost for words about the damage that has been done to the club.

“As a fan who loves the club, it is totally unacceptable to see this being played out in the public arena.

“The most heartbreaking thing about all this is that we were on such a high after the Arsenal game on Tuesday. The wonderful success of that night has been completely diminished. It is completely gone.”

Moores confesses that he has had some sleepless nights since deciding to sell out to the warring American pair.

“I believed those fellows,” he explained. “I believed everything they said to me and they said it all again to the fans via the media.

“People can judge for themselves whether they kept those promises.

“I have to feel let down. If I could have afforded to take the club forward I would have done, but I couldn’t.

“I would love to be still in charge but I would have held the club back. That’s why I’m asking these two gentlemen to think of the club, not their own kudos.

“When things are played out like they are at present, it virtually makes the club a laughing stock and that is not acceptable.

“These two gentlemen have got to come to a quick agreement about the way forward. If they can’t, then they should stand aside and let someone else do it.”

i dont think you would want those 2 involved in your club afu, magnier espeacily, when he was involved with man utd he had never been to old trafford ever and the one time he did go and see them in switzerland because he was living nearby, he left after about 20,mins, he has no intrest in football whatsoever, i think they had a stake in celtic too,you would have thought if they had any feelings for celtic they would have pumped some money in but i dont think they ever did.

I would agree mate. Im sure out of the two, one is a Spurs fan and the other doesnt support anyone. They are interested in making money, at all costs. They dropped United fans right in it when they sold to the Glazers and wouldnt want them anywhere near my club. Then again, whose to say some mad camel jockeys from the middle east would be a better choice for that matter.

Could be worse, our Chairman could be trying to rename us Harchester United or we could be in danger of going out of business - things are never as bad as you first think.
