Tyson Retires

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/4084744.stm

A sad end being beaten by another journeyman. It puts Danny Williams victory into perspective (not that anyone believed he beat a good Tyson anyway).

I also think Lewis did well to meet him him when he did. At his best he was one of the most awsome sights in a boxing ring the world has ever seen. In my opinion - at his best - he was the best ever heavyweight champion.

It puts it into perspective that I only just heard the result and that no one has started a thread on this until now (12 hours + after the fight finished). A legend of the ring goes into retirement and nobody notices.

Dont think we have seen the last of him.

Shame when this happens,i always feel saddened when great fighters come back
into the sport instead of retiring, although i find it hard to be sympathetic for Tyson as he has made millions and frittered it away ( Don King robbed him aswell ) .Who doesnt he bloody rob.

I agree that in his day he was one of the best heavyweights i have seen, most opponents were beaten before they got into the ring with him, such was his personna.

I hope he does actually retire this time rather than a comeback in a couple of year.
Having said that the American public will still pay to see him in what can only be described as a modern day freakshow.

Having lost to Williams and McBride I seriously doubt even the yanks would pay too much to see him fight. Maybe in Japan, Africa or the Middle East they would pay for the unique opportunity, but other than that.....

Not many dogs called 'Mike' are there Komp?

I think Tyson means it now when he says he's out of it for good. Hopefully he won't crop up on 'I'm a Celebrity' or summat although I wouldn't rule it out.

Re: Tyson Retires

I was going to post this thread up - like you say its a sad day. I feel sorry for him in the way things have happened as it seems he is only making these comebacks for the money. You can see his heart isnt in it and he doesnt have the talent for it.

Boxers, once they have made a legacy so to speak should just retire and be remembered for how great they were, Tyson more likely will be remembered by a lot of people for his defeats, rather than his earlier part of his career.

I remember when he beat Buster Douglas, first boxing match i can ever remember seeing - must of been around 8 or something.

That's a good point Kiko. What's the first thing you think of when someone mentions Tyson? It probably isn't all his glorious victories. :think

Re: Tyson Retires

I don't think we've really seen the back of him to be honest. I think his debt before the McBride fight was $10million. I'm not sure how much his purse for the McBride was, but $4 million rings a bell.

I just don't think he can afford to turn his back on boxing until he's cleared his debts. I'd imagine he'll always be under considerable pressure from all his 'business advisors' to do just one more fight.

Re: Tyson Retires

Larry Holmes was a great champion who held on to the undisputed championship for many years. After he left a period of the heavyweight championship followed with 3 champions - WBA, IBF & WBC.

Mike Tyson - barely out of his teens unified the World Championship again by blasting all comers out of his way. He was an awesome proposition with great combinations, fast hands and great head movement. At his peak he was an awesome sight and I believe the best heavyweight ever.

People remember Ali for his three fights with Frazier and his famous scrap in Zimbabwe with Foreman. But people forget that he lost 4 times as well in big title fights and was knocked over by Our 'Enry. If it wasn't for some rather strong smelling salts he would have been bummed out by a very average British Heavyweight Champion.

Ali brought us some great nights but for me the best (at his best) was Tyson.

Re: Tyson Retires

Ali was great in front of the cameras, had great charisma, and was a superb boxer. He must have brought a shitload of interest and $$$ to the sport.

But Tyson was just a fu*king animal in the ring, I dont think he cared what people thought of him as Ali did.

For pure raw boxing strength and aggression I think u gotta go for Tyson.

Ali was the greatest man ever to box, but probably not the greatest ever boxer.

There's an idea "I'm a celebrity, get me off your ear"
