Really Great Old Player Thread

I just heard Peter Beardsley on Talksports then. He was a great player in his day. Gave 100% everytime and could turn a game with a moment of magic with a through ball or something. His ugliness was the only thing that never made him a star player.

I always said Andy Cole was only good at Newcastle because of the service and balls he got from Beardsley.

I can't think of any more great old players. Hoddle was differant class and sure had something other players hadnt.

Hugh Sproat the Ayr ggoalie of the late 70's was a bit of a clown and used to throws gloves into the crowd after each game. He used to try and get away with wearing a razor blade earing as he was a bit of a punk and would wear a blue jersey when playing Celtic and a Green v Rangers. That all made him a hero in my eyes.

Dixie McNeil

In a team that finished only 14th McNeil scored 31 goals. The following season as Hereford made off with the third division championship he rattled in 35 goals in 41 appearances.

I was Dixie in the school playground, legend

If anyone could come up with someone we'd actually heard of, that would be a bonus too

Neil Hamblen's Sport Diary

HERE at the diary we love a good tantrum and tiara moment and appreciate it even more when it involves the self-styled “Biggest Celtic Fan in the World” Rod Stewart.

It seems the faux-Scots rocker, who once splashed out £25,000 hiring a private jet to see Henrik Larsson’s Hampden swansong and has a painting of the Swede hanging in his Hollywood mansion, was left a little cold when he met the Hoops legend.

Hot Rod was in Colorado for a knee operation when he was introduced to his idol by Dr Richard Steadman. Shaking hands, Stewart proudly pointed to the Celtic shirt he had gifted the clinic with his name printed on the back.

“But you never played for Celtic, did you?” said Larsson.

“He was dead serious and I quickly had to change the subject,” whined Hot Rod. “I’ll probably take down that oil painting I have in my gym.”

Larsson was unapologetic, although sadly didn’t put the boot into the faux-Scots rocker’s entire back catalogue since leaving The Faces.

“I’m not playing for Celtic anymore. Perhaps it would be wise of him to take it down,” suggested the Swede.

It’s just a shame we can’t all judge a situation as well as Rod Stewart. The diary is, though, reminded of his concert at the SECC last year when he came on stage wearing a Celtic scarf to the tune of “Hail, hail, the Celts are here”. Five people were arrested for alleged breaches of the peace and assault. “It was naive of me not to think it would upset anyone,” said a sheepish Hot Rod.
