I was going to work my lunch hour and merely browse TDP. After seeing this topic though, I feel compelled to spout my usual trademark brand of bile and nonsensical comment on this thread.

First off, Villa arent as 'marketable' as Chelsea. Im not saying Chelsea are a bigger club, but with the players they have and the fact they are in London, Villa and Chelsea are poles apart.

They obviously dont have the financial clout of Chelsea and I would debate kiko's point "remember the financial backing villa now have" as I dont see any backing. They bought Petrov.... and.... errr errr that crap right back that Celtic released, Agather Christie or whatever he's called.

So no real example of financial muscle.

Lets not forget, O'Neill came first in a 2 horse race up in no-man's land. I think people lose perspective on what he achieved. He did well with a good club (relatively speaking), no more no less. You look at what Maureen did (and I hate him) at Porto - 2 finals 2 'lucky' wins, but wins never the less.

O'Neill like I said won what was expected of him, no more. He's an ok manager.

I think Villa will settle down after the hype dies away. I think that the reason they are doing so well, is that other clubs havent kicked on this year. Top six still wouldnt include Villa, I'd go for Liverpool, Chelsea, Man U, Everton, Arsenal, Spurs and even Pompey before Villa. Thats not based on a biased attitude towards the midlands, its based on the fact that no midlands club will achieve anything of note, ever.

Although I have money on them winning the Coca Cola LDV Worthington Cup Anglo Italian vans trophy or whatever the league cup is called these days.

Re: Can Villa Get To Chelsea's Level?

First off, its common knowledge that there was only a relatively limited kitty available before this transfer window as Lerner hadnt got enough control of the club to release his money into it. That caused one of the arguments with Ellis as they wanted Ellis to fund Petrov on a short term basis until Lerner had the 90% or whatever it was, which hes now got. I dont expect a massive kitty in january but I think he'll pump a fair amount in particularly with MON now on a longer contract. To say this is no evidence of financial muscle just completely ignores the realities of the situation.

And then I move onto:

.....well theres a contradiction if ever I read it. Everybody knows youre severely anti anything not Liverpool AFU, witness your attitude towards both Bellamy & Pennant before & after they signed...or played at least.
Before I'm accused of just one eyed backing of my club, read my earlier post that said Villa wouldnt touch Chelsea.
I can only assume that although we havent won as many trophies as Liverpool, we have, bar the UEFA Cup, won exactly the same ones ....unless they were gold plated & encrusted with diamonds when you won them

Leaving aside whether or not that's true of his time at Celtic, he surely did far more than was expected of him at Leicester. Took them to the Premiership, top half finish every season, and two league cups (plus one losing final). As Crowie said, look at where Leicester are now. Not saying that makes him the messiah or anything, but certainly an impressive record.

I think AFU is still hurting because MON's Celtic pumped his Liverpool the last time we played them. Ohh and he managed to screw £11m out of the Pool for Emile Heskey while at Leicester

Re: Can Villa Get To Chelsea's Level?

Can't really see it Kiko, maybe a team out of the big 4 may go on a good run but sustaining it without the financial clout they have is another matter.

Maybe a better question would be 'do you have to be a decent manager to succeed if you had a bottomless pit of cash?'

As i reckon given the amounts of cash Mourinhio has @ his disposal it does not really take a great manager to reach the heights he has climbed, if anything i think he has made quite a few bad signings and wasted a lot of money over the couple of yrs he has been there paying over the odds for players, a high % of which barely getting a game as they are not good enough.
