Re: Scotland This Week

Unbelievable !!

What a fecking result !

Just watched the highlights on sky and the comentator was very excited but right after the goal it panned into the crowd and the commentator said "this place is absolutely bouncing" the hairs on the back of my neck are still standing up !!!

Can't remember seeing Hampden bounce like that as we made it bounce yesterday !!!

We where slightly late in getting home as a brick got wedges between our back wheels of the bus but that didn't dampen our spirits!

Re: Scotland This Week

As the day has gone by I have felt rougher and rougher, all bairns in bed now and I am heading to mines shortly! The only thing thats perked me up is reading the papers. Every paper in Scotland had us winning as front page news today and its only when reading some of these papers that it starts to sink in what we achieved yesterday.

In truth we are minnows on the world football stage. We are a small nation of 5m who haven't qualified for a major tournament since 1998. However, for some reason, probably the past, we expect more that what we really should be achieveing. The expectancy level is huge. Walter Smith made some good comments yesterday pre game when he said we must be the only nation on earth, who on the back of 2 wins v the might of the Faroes and Lithuania, expects to beat the World Cup finalists and probably best team in the world just 3 months later

I think I was a bit blase about the win last night, ohh well, it was France but I always had a feelign sort of thing. But as I said, reading the papers today,....

France had lost only once in their last 40 Euro Championship qualifiers

They had only conceded first 4 times in their last 36 competitive games

They are ranked 2nd in the world by FIFA and, as the competition went on, were probably the best side at the World Cup

They hammered Italy 3-1 in September in revenge for the World Cup final loss

And we, Scotland, beat them 1-0 yesterday

For all the English lads out there, I don't think you can properly understand what it means to us. You are a "big team" and you have high expectations and you always qualify for the major tournaments, are always in with some chance and have a squad full of great players. I think if you had beat France 1-0 yesterday it would have been "Good result but we were at home etc and we would expect to win". Its like Liverpool/Man Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal would probably expect to beat any of the other 3 if they were at home in the EPL.

For us, its huge, it might seem not hugely significant but for us, this is the sort of "tell the grandkids I was there stuff".

I am away for a lie down, its been a long weekend!!

Re: Scotland This Week

Onto the Ukraine game, I have to say in the run up to the double header, this was the one I was fearing the most. In a way, the pressure was off for the France game - we had picked up points where we had expected to, and we would still be right in the mix if we lost. Playing Ukraine is a different matter as its important we prevent them grabbing 3 points. Luckily, Smith is the least likely to get carried away with Saturday and will make sure that gets through to the players.

Italy play Georgia away and that should be a real test of whether they have sorted themselves out. 3 points for the Azzuri there and they'll be building up a decent head of steam

We should play the same way again - Anderson perhaps deputising for the missing Dailly. I thought Alexander was superb last night - played better at left back than I've seen him do at right back. Ferguson had a good second half and should play again. Miller should come in for Faddy who admitted he was knackerred after yesterday, and so he should have been. The rest looks ok as it is.

Shevchenko a doubt for the Ukraine is big news, but I don't want to tempt fate with that one.

I should mention a well done to the SFA - I was all for Strachan to be manager, but they went against public opinion and went with Smith, and it has been the perfect appointment. Credit where credit is due for that one.

Well done to NI too(almost never noticed that last night.) Disappointing to see the Reps and Wales getting hammered - especially as both looked to be in decent shape not so long ago.

Re: Scotland This Week

Aye well done lads , lets hope they still have some energy in reserve to tackle the Ukraine and come back with a point a least.
Its been a long time since the Scots managed to qualify for a major tournament and it would create some great banter if they managed to do so along with England, so i'll save my sarcasm till then

Its still one hell of a group and will take a few more great results yet to qualify from but i really hope you do it. same too with the other home nations allthough its looking more and more unlikely on current form.

We know what it means Crowie and enjoy the moment, Englands expectations are high which is often confused with arrogance and no doubt the reason why most jocks just love it when we get beat.

As i've said b4 we see this as a laff and i would do the same if the boot was on the other foot but it does not stop me supporting the other home nations as i see them all as 'our teams'.

I'll probably come out with all sorts if you do manage to qualify as the banter will be flying , England should qualify and again thats not arrogance but as a seeded team we've got an easy ride and want shooting if we don't.

I'll not babble on about us as its Scotlands moment lets just hope u have what it takes to see the job through.
