Sturrock Sacked

Quote:
Sheffield Wednesday have parted company with manager Paul Sturrock less than a month after he signed a new contract.

The Owls are struggling in 21st place in League One and were thrashed 4-0 by Colchester on Wednesday.

"Our league position says it all," Wednesday chairman Dave Allen told the club website.

"In spite of strengthening the squad this year, we have not made the desired progress and, to that end, we need a change in the coaching staff."

Sturrock joined the Owls in 2004 and committed to the Hillsborough club until the summer of 2010 in a new deal last month.

Chairman Allen said an announcement regarding who will take temporary charge of the team would be made on Friday and that the search for a new manager had already started.

Wednesday were 14th in League One when Sturrock joined but the Scot managed to guide them to promotion via the play-offs that same season. The 49-year-old started his managerial career in Scotland with St Johnstone and Dundee United before spells with Plymouth and Southampton.
Bit of a surprise there i have to say. I know they are struggling so far but after signing a contract less than a month ago its a bit of a shock.

This is becoming a bit of a recurring theme now in football. Managers being sacked too quickly imo just because of a poor run/bad start etc.

Teams are never going to go anywhere if they continue this.

Only a club as skint as Wednesday would give their manager a new 3 year contract ...and then sack him a month later.....

The fcukin pantomine that is Sheffield Wednesday...

Bah. I'm a big Sturrock fan too and was rather impressed with what he did with Plymouth and then Wednesday. Were injuries to blame? They always seemed to have loads of injuries. Maybe they're just crap. They were always pretty hard to beat last season but lack of goals will kill ya in the end. Bah. I hope he finds another club.

Re: Sturrock Sacked

In my opinion they have fucked up by sacking him. He has performed minor miracle in taking them up to the Championship but in a paradoxical-type of way it was probably the worse thing he could have done. The poor guy has done brilliantly with literally no resources to hand. He has had barely any money to spend and the injury list he has had been shocking...

They should have sacked Dave Allen and the rest of the Board years ago..

Mind, it's still hilarious..
