Hearts - Spineless Fans?

Me and Dan were chatting about this the other day. What is it with Hearts fans? Why do they sit back and watch as one man, single handedly, destroys their club and pisses off all the players?

If this was ANY other club, I am sure that by now the Lithuanian feller would have been ousted. They are an awfully tolerant bunch arent they....

He has pissed off Presley and Hartley and now even Craig Gordon has been disciplined.

This Romanov feller seems a complete prick and I cant believe the fans havent done more to mobilise themselves and protest.

Hearts fans have hit out at majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov, accusing the 58-year-old banker of being "a playground bully."

In an open letter posted on The Hearts Supporters' Trust website, the fans have criticised Romanov's leadership.

One line reads: "We are an important sporting institution and you have turned us into a circus freak show." The Trust claims that Romanov's achievements over the past two seasons are being undone by his recent actions.
They havent been as tolerant as you think AFU with lots of demonstrations etc during the games and elsewhere.

Re: Hearts - Spineless Fans?

Your way off the mark AFU, both in your view of Hearts fans and in your view of Romanov.
The fans aren't exactly sitting back and not saying a word about whats going on, but they're limited in how much they can realisticaly do. How could fans of 'any club' remove someone who is the clubs majority shareholder, club sponsor and the owner of the bank with which the club's debt is held.

Romanov's got some crazy ideas, and I disagree with about 99% of them, but say he is single handedly destroying the club is unfair. Two years ago he single handedly saved the club, no question about it. Without him Tynecastle would be a building site right now. Gordon, Hartley and Pressley would have been long gone.

Re: Hearts - Spineless Fans?

Under Romanov's guidance, Hearts won the Tennent's Scottish Cup last season in a thrilling encounter against Gretna, and secured participation in the Champions League qualifiers for the first time in the club's history.

However, the Supporters' Trust letter to Romanov clearly states the fans' concerns about Romanov's involvement iat Tynecastle, accusing him of turning the Edinburgh club into a "circus freak show."

The letter begins by praising Romanov's financial input, but goes on to direct some strongly-worded aspersions towards the Lithuanian-based businessman.

"The truth is that we have gone from being the best thing in Scottish football for decades to being a laughing stock.

"People talk about us but rarely about the football.

"What we see now is constant interference, the public humiliation of some of our greatest players and a businessman who seems to see our club as a vanity project.

"And it is our club. We are the people who are now being mocked at work because of your antics."

The Trust letter also accuses Romanov of direct involvement in Pressley's departure from the club and demands more respect for the fans.

"The way you treated Steven Pressley was, for many of us, the last straw," the letter stated.

"We know him well enough to know that if he thought it was in the best interests of the club to criticise, then there must have been real problems.

"You may have brought money to the club but Elvis (Pressley) has shown not only great class as a footballer but real integrity.

"Your response to being challenged seems to have been the response of the playground bully.

"It now seems that you and the board do not care about results on the pitch. "The farce we have just endured of having a central defender play in midfield against Aberdeen with Paul Hartley on the bench, demonstrates that you do not even respect the fans any more."

Re: Hearts - Spineless Fans?

Aye, the HST letter is a pretty good piece from the fans. As they said, last season he turned them into the most talked about side in Scotland. Ok, part of that was down to sacking a manager when top of the league and unbeaten, part of that was appointing Graham Rix to replace Burley (apparently the other candidates were Ranieri, Vialli, Nevio Scala and Mattheus, I think!) but they were also playing good football.

Course then he said he would win the SPL next season (this) and win the Champions League (aye, the football one) within 5 years. All that sort of kept them in the news as well.

Ok, he was stark raving bonkers last season.

But this, its just crazy stupid mental and as the letter says, they are now the circus, the freak show.

If they had played with even half of last seasons early season form they would have had 2nd place sown up by now and possibly even be challenging Celtic. Their main rivals for 2nd, and a place in the coveted CL qualifiers again, Rangers, have had the half season from hell and its only in the last few weeks that they have looked like a semi decent team. I am still to be convinced that they are out of the woods yet, 3 of their next 4 are away. Anyway, that aside, Hearts had a great chance to consolidate last years place.

Instead, its all gone to rat-shit. Pressley etc have suffered these goings on for nearly 2 years now. They knew the chance was there to consolidate but the decisions being made are scandelous.

Supposedly a couple of the Lithuanian players are GUARANTEED a first team place if fit, its in their contracts.

Others, sub standard players, have arrived and ended up taking the place of better players. The very decent holding player Brellier kept out by some huddy for instance - but thats cos Romanov doesn't like Brellier. Ohh and despite him not liking Brellier as a player, which he has been quoted as saying so publically, he can't understand why Brellier won't sign a new 3 year contract offered. I mean, WTF, why offer the guy a contract if you dislike him that much??

The manager situation. Comical. One "leaves" on health related stress issues, one comes in, can't speak a word of English, reminds me of Boris Yeltsin, attacks a Falkirk physio who is trying to get on the pitch to treat an injured player, buggers off again. Some Lithuanian is then placed in charge. Except he is not, and was never going to be. Then the stressed manager comes back, probably mainly to answer a speeding charge in Perth but hey, why no give him a shot of managing the team again. Except that he has to do what Romanov says.

Then you have Pressley speaking out. Pressley dropped/left out 2 weeks later after speakign out. This behind rumours of the Lithuanian playing contingent at the club, now runnign into several dozen, going to declare a vote of no confidence in one of the best captains in the SPL. Course they are merely Romanovs stooges, put up to it with him behind them pulling the strings. Fans get uppity about it, Romanov comes back to Scotland, as does Ivanauaskas, the stress case. Romanov makes some gibberish comment about Pressley being the cement that binds the team together, Presslet back in the team. Two weeks later Pressley emptied and finally paid off. I mean - Ehhhhhhhh

Hartley will go. Possibly January. The only reason Gordon won't , aside from him now being captain, is that he is actually worth something.

Now look at all that and as you say, you would expect the Hearts fans to be tearing down the ground in protest. Except Romanov has them over a big barrel and is shoving his cock hard up them anyway he wants. Some of them still "believe", look at what he did last season etc but that number is dropping by the day as he rips the club to pieces and then spits on it and moulds it into his own wee plaything.

If Romanov goes, that could be the end of Hearts. They are in big debt and its only the fact that their debt is now lodged at his own Lithuanian bank that is keeping them alive.

He could also just flatten the ground and do what he wants with it, sell it for flats and fuck of back East. What would Hearts do with no owner, big debts and no ground.

He really has them exactly where he wants them. There is no knight in shining armour on the horizon so Hearts fans have to either suffer the madness with gritted teeth or face the pretty real prospect of their club disappearing doon the swanny. Which would you rather take?

I never thought I would find the day when I (a Celtic fan) can genuinely say that I feel sorry for Hearts fans nowadays. Celtic and Hearts don't like each other but I really do feel for them as a set of supporters now as they are being fucked over royally by some madman and there ain't much they can do about from lie and take it.

Re: Hearts - Spineless Fans?

Great post crowie Thats the type of post youd expect from a passionate Hearts fan so fair play.

There isn't much in the way of protest, but as has been mentioned I think that can partly be attributed to some fans still holding onto the shred of hope that Romanov can deliver on his 'promises', and the majority realising that they are at the whim of a madman, and that given his reaction to Pressleys protest, the reaction to a mass boycott or whatever is unpredictable at best, and given that Romanov could easily instigate the death of the club, thats no good thing. The best they can do is probably sit tight and hope for the best.
