"Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
That's what the Sevilla president allegedly said to the Betis president's nephew on Saturday night, the latest of the insults in the long-running war of words between Sevilla and Betis.
You just don't get insults like that in the directors box in England, do you

RC what did the local press have to say about Beckham's recall at the weekend? Will the Madrid fans be sad to see him go?

I'm guessing that Christianu and Keema won't fail to pop in here with that thread title

I did wonder who'd be the first to bring that up
Burt, from what I've read on the subject (which I have to say isn't really all that much), I'd say the Madrid fans appreciate his time at the club, but won't necessarily be all that sorry to see him go. As for him being recalled, the pressure from some parts of the press seemed to be building on Capello to bring him back in - I think the headline on one of the sports papers the day he was named in the squad was "Victoria Beckham" (Victory Beckham).

Re: "Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
That was a good read Rc
I think the premiership could do with a few club presidents sounding off and making rivalries even bigger like that, it makes good tv
Maybe the yanks could start it off over here

He writes one of those columns every week, Kop, they're always well worth a read if you're interested in Spanish football. From the Guardian football homepage http://football.guardian.co.uk/, just click on Sid Lowe down the left-hand side, latest articles usually appear every Monday.

They didn't make up then
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...pe/6406455.stm
The Copa del Rey tie between Real Betis and Sevilla was abandoned after Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was knocked out by an object thrown from the crowd.
The incident happened after Sevilla's Frederic Kanoute scored in Wednesday's quarter-final second leg match.

Re: "Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
I heard about that last night. Shocking. Is there a rise in footy violence of late on the continent, or is it just better reported than in years gone by?

I'm not sure funkt, but with the majority of press, police etc. saying that the English are the worse supporters in Europe should think again.

Re: "Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
It's certainly nothing particularly new here in Spain, that kind of thing happens frequently, although I'd guess it normally takes something major for it to get reported in England (like the pig's head thrown at Figo).
Several times this season there have been games where you can see articles come raining down on opposition players as they go to take a corner/throw/goal kick, in one incident there was even a glass whiskey bottle thrown. Last season in a cup game between Valencia and Deportivo, the linesman got hit by a coin thrown from the crowd. The ref abandoned the game, and they ended up playing the remaining time (the entire 2nd half, I think) at a later date behind closed doors.
The problem really is getting out of hand now over here, and the FA are going to have to start taking action, closing grounds if that's what it takes, because one of these days someone's going to end up seriously hurt.

Re: "Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
I think it may have already reached that stage gills. I remember at a Newport FA Cup game (not that long ago), a linesman got flawed and pretty hurt by an object thrown from the crowd (a coin I think). Its sickening to think that this sort of occurance is happening almost every week-in-week-out, but I agree that it has to be something major to get reported over here.

Re: "Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
Sorry, when I said it had to be something pretty major for it to be reported in England, I was referring to what goes on in Spain, in reply to AFU's question of whether it was maybe just better reported than in years gone by.
There was also quite a bit of trouble outside the ground before the Atletico v Real Madrid derby on Saturday, quite a few car windscreens smashed. Gets a brief mention in here http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/20..._how_atle.html

Re: "Christ, you're as gay as your uncle!"
Betis's ground to be closed for their next 3 home games, and the suspended game to be restarted from the time it was suspended, with Sevilla leading 1-0, to be played at Getafe's ground but with no fans allowed in. Betis are to appeal.
