Rugby League/Rugby Union

Anyone care to explain the difference between the two of these?

Got a rugby union match on just now and it seems the same to me except i don't see the amount of tackles before they kick like in rugby league. Obviously there is a difference so i would appreciate it if anyone fancied telling me

Cheers.

Re: Rugby League/Rugby Union

Well i watched around 60 mins of that rugby union match and im now watching St Helens rugby league and i have to say, while it might not be better skilled - it is by far more entertaining for me to watch.

The union looked dull and disorganised, the teams were kicking far too much for my liking whilst the league just now is all blistering pace and power.

Maybe if i understood the rules for Rugby Union i would understand it better but for now League gets the nod from me by a long way.

The first thing to know about rugby union, is that there isn't a six tackle thing. Teams can hold onto position for as long as they can keep hold of the ball.

I would say a lot more, but it would probably take me at least an hour to explain how rugby union works I must admit I didn't use to like it before I knew all the rules, but now I much prefer it to rugby league.

I'm sure there is a website with all the info you need on it

Websites ----> searching for info -----> means i have to make effort

these all equate to things that don't go well with me Zonks.

I dont actually see much Union on offer on TV so i will lay low for now and enjoy the Super League for now.

If players can hold on to the ball for aslong as they like - does this mean they could just keep scoring, have ball for 10 mins and score again and so on. Hmmm - think the 6 tackle rule is better. Could be wrong though

Re: Rugby League/Rugby Union

Well the other team can win the ball back of course

It's not like league, when you make a tackle, everyone backs off and off you go again. People can compete for the ball in rucks and mauls, and in the tackle situation. Obviously teams can kick as well, so the ball does change hands a lot.

I promise to have a full blown discussion about this over the weekend, but I've got a million things going on tonight, so all my posts will be short and sweet tonight

Re: Rugby League/Rugby Union

I've given some tips on rugby union - my speciality - played it and refereed it - the biggest problem with rugby union are the rules -
i)the fans do not understand them
ii)the players do not understand them
iii)the referees interperet them in different ways

what chance have the viewers got.

before the first game i was being assessed as a referee - the advice by the assessor was -"penalise the first line out against who's throwing in and penalise the second lineout the other way, don't worry there are 7 pages of rules on line outs "

Rugby League do not have lineouts - I wonder why.

I still love rugby union - and think it is the better game but to the uninitiated it is one of the most difficult to follow the refereeing decisions. :loon

I suppose this has made it more complicated - what do you expect from an ex-referee

cheers

Re: Rugby League/Rugby Union

Love watching Rugby League, really struggle to watch Union.
I think the game flows so much better, none of the mauling where you haven't got a clue whats going on.
League seems to be a lot amore athletic, full of breaks etc.

Re: Rugby League/Rugby Union

I thought Rugby Leage was the bigger sport, especially since the introduction of Super League. My (very valid) assessment of Rugby Union was that it was watched only by a select group of ex-Public School arse ticklers called Giles, who due to their represssed homosexuality, found gratification hard to come by. Therefore a sport where fat toffs roll around in the mud and grab each others todgers is perfect for them.

However, statistics dont seem to back this point up. Jason Robinson changing codes suggested that the money was better in Union rather than League. I prefer League because it seems a more orderly game and flows better in my opinion. Union still seems to be a bit of a mish mash and a hoo har in my opinion. Whenever I watch it, it just seems childish to me. Like someone says 'Pile on' and everyone dives on top of some poor bugger for no apparent reason. The fact that it is seen as a gentlemen's sport, when they punch, gauge and poke each other really does my head in. Their just posh loads who like to get muddy and have a bath together aftera good ruck....
