Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
Very self explanatory.
I am usually one that doesn't get taking aback by many things. I have witnessed some really gruesome acts on the net but there is one that really got me.
Im not sure exactly why, maybe because im a football fan and it could easily happen to myself, although it would be very unlikely in this country.
Anyways - i remmeber readng about this a few months back and only just seen something on it which reminded me about it.
Basically the story is that it was at a Colombian football and a guy in the crowd was carrying a backpack which was in the colours of their rivals which they were playing.
So the fans in his section decided to beat the hell in to him and then threw him off their tier of the stadium below them.
This guy was a fan of these thugs team, but died simply because of his colours on his backpack.
Image below - i find it very haunting.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
I couldnt find the pic I was thinking of. It was on the back of the Sun I think and was just on the pitch and his eyes were wide open but you could tell he wasnt there.
I think the reason why i found this shocking was because you expect footballers to be so healthy and fit and to suddenly drop dead whilst playing infront of a whole crowd. Seen him play in the Prem very recently before it as well. Looked a really cool guy too did Marc Vivien Foe.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
Two very good examples there.
Kiko - I saw the video of that football fan being thrown of the terrace onto the one below. I'm sure he was stabbed before being thrown off. Also I think it said he lived in the report I watched!

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
Yeah i have seen the video before too. He definately died. I have read it in numerous magazines and forums about it.
Mr M - i remember watching the game Foe died. Very tragic and i see where your coming from with you don;t expect them to die because of fitness etc.
I remember the sun's picture also - not nice.
The magazine i originally seen that fan being killed in also had a picture very similar to that of Foe, and it was a Brazilian player who died under similar circumstances but his name escapes me at the minute.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
Agreed Mord - i think it affects us more for definate cause we ourselves are football fans who all our sides games and can never imagine this happening to us.
Should be noted aswell - this game that took place ended up being abandoned due to pitch invasion by the fans where players and the referee were punched and assaulted but nothing too serious.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
i can imagine something like that in Europe only in Polish and some hot-hedead balkan leagues, BUT this is too much kill supporter of their own club for reason like that
what did the colombian police? - did they arrest the main aggressors from the mob or something like that?

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
I am not sure Mord but i will have a look into it and see what i can find for you at some point this week.
The police probably did nothing as murders in that part of the world are a regular thing but it wil be interesting to see what happened and also if the club side got any fines or whatever.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
For me, and being old enough to have seen them all "as they happen".
Hillsborough
Heysel
Bradford
Nearly 200 people dead simply by attending football matches.
I remember being in the pub when Hillsborough happened. Had the telly on and they were saying that the game was suspended as there were people on the pitch. Telly went there and you see folk clambering over fences and think "What the hell's going on here". Then you see its not actual trouble/fighting but folk fighting for their lives. Its surreal watching people getting crushed to death like that on telly. All I remember is everyone just standing watching in the pub and no one saying a word.
Having been in many a packed ground when it was still terracing, especially The Jungle at Parkhead which had a capacity of about 9,000 standing but where everyone went then I was all too aware how easy it is for crowd sways and movements in packed areas to put the shitters up you. Nothing worse than being in front of a crush barrier and the crowd swaying forward and you being pressed into the barrier, feeling yourself getting squashed as hell. To be in the same sort of situation but have a big fuck of 10ft fence in front of you must have been absolute hell. Many people who attended footy in the 80's will have known that something like Hillsborough was never a million miles away from happening.
Heysel, I was sitting down to watch what promised to be a great European Cup final and they said there had been trouble and then they show the people getting crushed against the wall and people getting laid out on the running track, obviously dead. Always remember the Italians going mental in there end and breaking down the fence and fighting with police.
That game should never have gone ahead.
Bradford, I remember watching the final scores and then they went across to Valley Parade and there was a fire and I always remember the Lincoln fans singing and dancing on the pitch unaware of what was happening. Again, like Heysel and Hillsborough, you had no idea how bad it actually was until much later.
As I said, haven seen all of the above, not exactly first hand, but "as they happen" it sends a shiver up your spine.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
No one died, but when that German bloke just stabbed Monica Seles during a match was pretty shocking. Not something you see every day for sure.
I think he only got a 2-year suspended sentence too, because she refused to testify in court (to protect her privacy or something daft), even though it was live on TV and they had all the evidence they needed. He pleaded insanity too I think

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
kiko - was the Brazillian guy Serginho? ... Died in Brazil a few years back. There were stories at the time saying the club Chairman and Doctor supressed medical reports that said he was unfit to play and had a heart condition.
The club was only a small one relatively and he was too big a player to rest. So they never told him and he dropped dead
http://www.eurosport.com/home/pages/...to652060.shtml
I was at Hillsborough. It was a present for my 7th Birthday..... It all happened to my left hand side and truth be told - I remember nothing of it. When I see it on TV it is like watching the Miner's strikes or the Berlin Wall coming down. It happened to everyone else but me.
Remember going to a restaurant afterwards - we were in a mini bus with 10 of my dads mates. Went for a wee and there were blokes (scousers) just crying in the toilets... Wierd seeing grown ups cry when u r a kid...doesnt seem right...

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
Nearly brought a tear to my eye that Crowie, & Funkt....
I remember the 3 the same as you, & a York striker dying on the pitch...was that the same day as Bradford or is my mind playing tricks ??
Hillsborough, i was playing a cricket match, an early season friendly & I was only young.....about 17 (1989?) & we were off for tea. I remember walking into the bar & the opposition were all watching our tv on the wall, just silence......you just know when somethings wrong like that.....the airs just dead. I remember reading afterwards that Cottee had scored for Everton @ Villa Park in the other semi, ran away celebrating....wondering why everyone didnt seem as happy as he thought...he was jumping up & down in front of a copper who just turned to him & said 'you sick bastard, you should be ashamed of yourself!!'...he didnt know....
Heysel, I agree, should never have been played, & it was a disgrace that it was tbh, for all the wrong reasons. I watched it on tv as a 13 year old kid, shouting for Liverpool & confused as to why my old man & uncle were just sitting there, quietly.
Bradford was just horrendous...there cant be a worse way of going than that, but unlike the others it wasnt live but as it filtered through you just began to see the enormity of it.
The Hillsborough scenes I think will live with me for the rest of my life, along with a couple of prominent moments from this century, obviously, but I think it was just the fact that it could have been any of us, being football fans.
Too long ago, but I guess those Munich killings in the Olympics, the Israeli athletes would rate quite highly for those around.
Also not something I'm interested in, but Senna's was a very public death

Yes it was Swoops. It was shown live on TV for a couple of hours. Not the close up cctv version that winrew saw on his safety video. Just the start from a little bit of smoke and people jumping up and down laughing, right through to the stand engulfed in flames.
Similar story with Hillsborough. Seeing the basic pictures but not quite grasping the enormity of it.
Outside of sport, I remember the shooting of Yvonne Fletcher being shown on the news, although (quite rightly) you never ever see it repeated on TV.

Re: Sport Incidents Which Shocked You?
I seemed to remember it just being on the news ODM ahh, youre probably right, you usually are Also youre a lot older than me so you'd have been more aware , but I meant the game wasnt live whereas I thought the others were.
If youre going outside of sport, then as long as I live I will never forget the pictures of 9/11 & the planes hitting the twin towers....I watched that in the pub, about tea time here, & I'd been on the train & knew nothing about it & got into this locals boozer...a real loud, drinkers place...& I walked through the door & all the early doors crowd were in there in silence, & this place was normally rocking........that was a frightening day.
Just to lighten the tone slightly, & I'll get hammered for this, but on a local radio station t'other day the DJ was asking for 'inappropriate songs', & admitted that he'd been working night time shows in the mid-90's & straight after he'd announced Princess Di's death he put on Spandau Ballets 'Through the Barricades' he said in never even entered his head........
