Hibernian boss Tony Mowbray has given a cautious welcome to a possible link-up with Premiership champions Chelsea.
Chelsea have confirmed they are in early negotiations with Hibs, but Mowbray is anxious to ensure there are benefits for both clubs.
"They're after the next John Terry and they have to find him somewhere," Mowbray told the Daily Record.
"I don't see why we shouldn't welcome it as long as our fans know we wouldn't do anything detrimental to the club."
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has called for the club to produce more of their own new talent to avoid spending vast sums on established players.
The Blues brought in Frank Arnesen as head of development, and the Dane has been involved in the talks with Hibs.
"Hibs are in a good area in the United Kingdom - we can use each other," he told the Scottish Daily Mirror.
Hibs boss Tony Mowbray
"At PSV I had a special relationship with a Danish club. They were my eyes and ears in that area.
"And we gave them something back by sending a player on loan to them to get experience."
Mowbray said he would like to investigate the possible deal in greater detail, but was wary of the potential pitfalls.
"Chelsea initiated the contact, as I'm sure they have with other clubs who have proven they can develop talented young players," he said.
Frank Arnesen wants to make Chelsea less reliant on signings
"They are trying to do their job properly but just because you're identified by Chelsea, you don't have to drop everything and say 'here, have our best players'.
"They're looking down the line towards the future so they don't have to spend £20m on players.
"But we are producing good youngsters and we would need to see what age they are looking at targeting players and what recompense comes our way - whether that's financial or getting players in.
"Their reserves would be earning 20 times more than even our first-team players so we're talking about players we could never afford.
"But I'm sure I could squeeze Frank Lampard in the side somewhere!"

Would do no harm what so ever to Hibs to get involved in a link up with Chelsea imo.
I see its aimed at the youth more so but i would imagine they would be involved in some sort of loans available to them for Chelsea's fringe players which would improve there squad vastly.
You got to think aswell Abahimovich would settle them with a nice little sum each season too.
