The 'One Of A Kind' Theory

It's a fairly simple one - that if you have various similar entries, then fans of that type of song will have their vote split to a certain extent. Conversely, one of a kind songs may enjoy strong support purely by being the only song of that type that fans have the option to vote for.

Look may also be important here(eg if there are 2 or 3 male pinups then they may split those that would vote purely for that reason. If there was just one he could enjoy that block vote all to himself.)

Note that I'm not referring to 'different' songs here...the French entry is certainly different but not necessarily the only entry of its type.

Finland last year was certainly a one of a kind...prior to this its more questionable but I don't have time just now to sift through previous entries. I didn't think it looked a winner prior to the show and neither did many...there certainly seemed to be stronger songs that it, but perhaps this is what we were missing.

So to develop this, we'll need to group this year's songs into some general categories, and see what's left sticking out. Another job for tomorrow.

Right I can't be bothered going through this in too much detail as after more thought I'm not sure it's particularly relevant, but anyway, just doing an eyeball check here's the ones that look to be one of a kind songs in this years contest...

Norway...just.

Spain and Russia if only for the boy band/girl band thing.

Mmmm and the Swiss perhaps...altho most of the elements in both are in other songs too.

It's a tricky distinction to make...take Denmark for instance(Drama Queen song.) On the face of it nothing similar to any other, but drag act - Ukraine and poss Sweden have it(guy looks a bit funny), euro disco Cyprus, Bulgaria etc etc, big costumes, plenty have them...so nothing unique there, altho the package is perhaps(no pun intended!)

All the songs above are either no hopers or drivel anyway so let's just consign it to the TDP bin.
