One preview for Saturday
After their excellent victory over Juventus in the Champions League this week Bayern Munich return to the domestic scene with a home game against second from bottom Duisburg. Coach Felix Magath was quick to dispel any fears of complacency saying, “We know all about this situation and there is no danger we will underestimate them.” Admitting the midweek game had robbed his players of stamina he added, “We have no option. We have to perform again. We want to regain top spot. We prefer being first rather than second. Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also agrees, “The aim is to top the table by Christmas. We want to spend the winter break in first place.”
Bayern have got off to a very solid start this season and their home form has been very impressive. Four straight victories without conceding a goal against Wolfsburg 2-0, Hannover 1-0, Hertha 3-0, and M’gladbach 3-0 Although it is still early days to try and assess the strength of their opponents the lowest ranking team they have played at home to date is Hannover who currently occupy the 11th place in the league. With Duisburg still looking to record their first away victory of the season it’s hard to believe they will achieve it this weekend. A 5-3 defeat at Kaiserslautern on the opening day of the season was followed by two more defeats at M’gladbach 2-1 and Hertha 3-2. A 1-1 draw at Hannover in their last away game has halted the run of consecutive defeats. Magath has virtually a full squad to pick from but defiantly out are Philipp Lahm, Andreas Gorlitz, Bixente Lizarazu and Owen Hargreaves.
