Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

I’ll offer a word of warning for the next two weeks in that I’ve lost money on the last three French Opens for some reason . Last year was particularly bad. I’m usually good at picking underdogs but the chances of an upset diminish significantly over 5 sets where the better players have time to recover from mistakes and allow their superior skill to act. There are a lot of short priced favourites such as Robredo and Davydenko that should romp home but I try to avoid betting under 1.40.

From the early starts

Cilic_Ascione

First meeting between the French wild card Ascione and the 2005 junior Champion. Both have had recent Challenger victories – Cilic in Croatia and Morocco and Ascione in Rome. Cilic has had the benefit of playing qualifiers here while Ascione’s record here is very poor (2 from 7 won). Cilic has in the last few weeks beaten a number of players that have defeated Ascione recently (Ulirach, Gulbis and LAcko) and is I feel overall in better form than Ascione.

1.5 Units Cilic @ 1.84

Peya-Lapentti

Lapentti has been carrying a long term injury and there is some doubt in my mind as to whether he will stand up to a 5 set battle if Peya can make things difficult. He has only played 7 games in 2007 and match preparedness must be an issue. Peya is limited on clay but if he can stick at this he might be able to wear the veteran South American down.

0.5 Units Peya @ 3.5

Vasellin-Daniel

Vasellin the French wild card looks a bit too long against the Brazilian qualifier Daniel. Daniel’s clay record outside south America is pretty poor. Vasselin perfrosm better in France than anywhere else and at his price looks a bit of value.

0.75 Units Vassselin @ 2.62

Vliegen-Udomchoke

After what seemed to be a breakthrough 06 the wheels have come off for Vliegen in 2007. He has lost the last 6 (all clay) and I had to think long and hard about backing him here. The main reason is that his opponent is not only in a terrible slump of his own but also has no clay form whatsoever (a career W4 L16 says it all). Udomchoke lost 11 games on the spin in Austria to H.T Lee and he has lost 6 of the last 7. Vliegen needs a win or two and Udomchoke is on clay at least a throwback to the players he was beating regularly on the Challenge circuit.

2 Units Vliegen @ 1.40

Devlider-Llodra

An all French battle here. Llodra is ranked over 100 places below Devlider on clay. He is W25 L 40 on the surface. He recently withdrew from San Remo with a leg injury and bar a good showing in 2005 he has exited here at the first round stage in 6 of 7 starts. Devlider has 5 Challenger titles to his name on clay and has been playing almost entirely clay in 2007. His form this year is patchy but the surface suits him better than Llodra and bar the derby factor he looks value for this.

2 Units Devlider @ 1.73

Melzer-Acasuso

Melzer not usually a player I have much confidence in but this is a big price. He went out first round in Austria to Monaco but Monaco went on to win the event in fine style which makes his performance appear a bit better. The early exit enabled him to make preparations earlier while Acasuso was playing in Dusseldorf (4th match in 4 days) on Saturday and might be fatigued. If Melzer can stretch this one out a bit Acasuso might wilt.

0.75 Units Melzer @ 3.20

I'm not really one for heeding warnings Wittman and I like the cut of your gib so I'm on just about all of them(my tennis match betting sucks.)

Will give it a round or two before looking at the outrights.

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Guccione - Economidis 2 @ 1.95

Two very fast-serving players. I prefer Economidis that I saw during the qualification against Mark Lopez. Very hard-to-break player and with choises of play higher than the Aussie. Stake 4\10

M. Cilic - T. Ascione 2 @ 2.30

The young Marin is always near to make the transition between a promise and a astonishing player. Usually he has always missed the important possibility: today a french-man with good experience will could give him one more disappointment. Stake 3\10

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Welcome to TDP, Fazeman

Good luck to everyone today. Looking at the weather report on Wittmann's link it's looking like today could be a total washout though, so on that basis I'm going to give today a miss. If the forecast changes then I'll have a look at the games later.

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Welcome to Daily Punt Fazeman.

Economides Beat Nadal back in 2001 which must be his claim to fame! Guccione has a decent serve but with the courts playing slow you’d have to fancy the Greek alright Guccione’s lost to some real no hopes like Balleret and Alvarez recently.

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

I’m going to take a chance on Christop Rochus reversing a 3-0 negative H to H against Koubek. 2 f the matches go back to 2003 and the other was a 3 settter on clay in 2005. The Belgian came through qualifying and has won a few on clay recently albeit against limited opponents. Koubek has lost 10 of the last 12 and quotes of around 1.5 are wildly short.

0.75 Units Rochus @ 2.7

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Two from the early women’s games.

Garbin – Morigami

Morigami won her first WTA title in Prague recently on clay but it is still her worst surface in my view. Garbin not having a great year but she has made the third round here 3 times and and in her seven appearances has never lost in the first round here. Morigami leads the H to H 2-1 (and won the sole clay meeting in the green clay in Charleston) but she has been troubled with back injuries and had a very poor loss recently to Caroline Maes.

1.5 Units Garbin @ 1.64

Llagestera -Smashanova

Smashanova has done a Tony Blair and announced she will retire after Wimbeldon. As it is she has played only 1 game this year and I actually thought she had retired. She was a reasonable force in her day but with a solitary game all year you’d have to seriously question match preparedness here. She also has a poor record here with 5 first round exits in nine starts. Vives who looked to be building up momentum in 2005 (a 4th round appearance at RG a highlight) suffered an injury that kept her out for nearly a year and has not receovered that momentum. I still think with superior match fitness that she will have too much for the veteran Israeli.

2 Units Llagoestra @ 1.65

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Another few from the Ladies.

Sequera – Razzano

Sequera beat Razzano in the first round in Fes en route to winning her first WTA title (albeit one in a poor field). Razzano retired having lost the first set – this was her third withdrawl in 2007 which suggests all is not well in terms of her health. Razzano hasn’t ben beyond a second round since January and despite Sequera’s poor record here and the fact Razzano is on home soil I’d still fancy a small bet on the underdog here.

1 Unit Sequera @ 2.66

Pescheva – Petrova

A very small and very speculative lay of Petrova who pulled from Rome with a back injury she sustained in the gym. She is apparently on anti-inflammatories. Whether Pescheva has the ability to take advanatge is highly questionable but at odds of over 10/1 worth a small shout.

Risk 0.25 Units Lay Petrova @ 1.09

Hesih-Dulko

The Taiwanese Heish coming off some good ITF form beat Marat Ani in the final qualifier which shows some bit of form. Dulko has been very patchy in 2007 with a good run in Budapest an exception in a very poor 2007. With some practice behind her the Taiwanese could spring a surprise. Their sole meeting in 2005 was won bu Dulko in 3 sets.

0.75 Units Hesih @ 3.8
0.25 Units Dulko 2-1 @ 4.9

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Argh. Weather clears up, I decide to get involved, and it promptly starts raining again

Anyway, my bets, should the rain clear away again, are:

Ramirez-Hidalgo to beat Wawrinka @ 1.727 - 4pts

H2H is 2-0 to Ramirez Hidalgo, both on clay, although both were back in 2004. Wawrinka not having a good year, didn't even play due to injury between the Australian Open and the Rome TMS at the start of this month, and since his comeback, he's gone out in the first round of all three tournaments. Ramirez Hidalgo made the last 16 here at Roland Garros last year.

Bartoli to beat Rezai @ 2.1 - 2pts

Think Rezai being made favourite is an over-reaction to last week's tournament in Istanbul. Yes, she did very well, and yes, she beat some good players, but all with one eye on Roland Garros. Prior to that, she was 3-12 for the year. Bartoli is on the verge of making the top 20, and while clay may not be her best surface, she's made the final in Prague and the semis in Strasbourg in her last two tournaments.

May also be interested in Llodra, Peya, Navarro Pastor and Meusburger, but as they're all due on late in the schedule on their respective courts, they're unlikely to play today, so I'm not going to bother looking into them for the time being. If play resumes and it looks like they might get on, I'll come back to them, if not then I'll leave them for tomorrow morning.

For the outrights, currently have 0.5pts on Hantuchova @ 130, 0.5pts on Medina Garrigues @ 201 and 1.5pts (with a view to laying off later) on Kohlschreiber @ 570 (should've held fire there, as he was up to around 750 last I saw ).

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Very frustrating weather . This will play havoc with players building up a momentum and will definitely favor players finishing early like Davydneko who will be in and relaxed while the others are getting warmed up, playing and leaving.

First bet a winner for a change here. Garbin beats Morigami in a match that featured 9 breaks of serve in the 10 games in the second set .

Thought Sequera would add a tasty second at nice odds when she raced into a 4 game lead with two early breaks against Razzano. She then managed to lose 7 of the next 8 . Following the WTA game as frsutrateing as ever.

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

raining and raining
anw, i am expecting surprises in this grand slam

i will start placing money on favorites, odds around 1.05-1.25 i dont see any "value" to bet on outsiders just to loose my money

i will post my ideas when i am sure that they will play

Re: FRENCH OPEN 2007

Not quite sure I follow your logic there, Martens If you're expecting surprises, surely you're better off avoiding the short-priced favourites?
